Hello everyone, I am new allnurses.com. I am glad to see that there is a site where I can communicate with nurses from all over. I have a question. I recently applied to St joseph Hospital school of nursing located at 8th girard ave in philadelphia, PA. It is an accelerated one year RN program. I am somewhat concerned because I don't know much about the school. They don't even have a website. I wm currently working on prequisites to start the program in november. It is fairly new and just opened up about three years ago. I would love to get the input of someone that knows about the program or has graduated from it...thanks a lot.

Hi,

Not giving the program a bad rap or anything. I'd applied and starting to get required info together. I was told by one of my top nutrition teachers that she would NOT recommend their program. The last time I checked, the school was still hoping to get ACCREDITED. She advised me not to waste time, effort or money on this. She also stated they have a very low NCLEX passing rate. My advice is to do your research, talk to present and former students, visit the school-(they dont have a website?? I find this deplorable especially in this day and age) they require more info than other schools which is a shame since theyre not even ACCREDITED! Again not my intention to bad mouth them but then again just providing requested info...

Best of luck whatever you choose to do.

Yes your education is worth it and you must be a wise consumer. Frankford is a good program. I interviewed with them about 3 years ago. The staff member that interviewed me was negative about single mothers and working in the program. She told me I would have to give up my whole life for the time I was in the program and if I had I boyfriend I would never see him and that may take from my focus. I kind of turned me off and I decided on another school. So keep looking and if it doesn't feel right to you than move on.

They do have a low NCLEX rate but again the school has only be in session two years. I was also told that the students in the first class had a hard time passing the NET test so pasting the NCLEX would be a problem. They low the admission rate on the test to start the first class and to start the school. Trying to give people a chance. The website is http://www.sjhson.org/ I was looking at it today. Since one of the members was talking about a letter posted on it. I wanted to see what it was about. They are not Accredited but no school can get accreditted until it has been in session more than three years and NClEX pass rate in above 65%. Best of luck to you and good luck finding a school. I know this is a challenge for us all.

When I interviewd at St. Joe's they were very negative about having a family (husband and kids) and picking up occ. hrs at work to get by. They told me straight out 'you will have no life and you'll need to miss those little halloween parades'. I said my husband and I have already discussed this, then told me 'then you need to rediscuss it'. RUDE PEOPLE! US wives & mothers can attend school too! I'm waiting for my reacceptance letter back in to another school (took break after child) decided the other way is more worth it(BSN)

Glad to see they've instituted a website. Its about time!

Hello everyone, just wanted to let you know that this school is known for academic dishonesty and students from the first class are having a hard time making it through interviews once they disclose that they went to SJHSON. Also, Go to the State Board of Nursing website and it will tell you that this school is running on " PROVISIONAL PROBATION".This information is not being disclosed to students, instead they are telling students that they don't have their accredation but in reality they may not get it. They may even be forced to close and now people will lose their monies. Check things out throughly, there are MAJOR complaints from past faculity and students and they are being investigated. I also heard that they have extended the length of time for the program from Jan. to May and changed the criteria to get in, this program was presented to the STATE Boared of Nursing with intentions to serve the low income, African American and Latino population that faced challenges, there were to be in place support, tutors and instructors that cared. The instructors they have on staff seem as though they face many challenges and can't be hired anywhere else. They have defrauded the community and the Board of Nursing. So, please Please do research. Who in their right mind would go to a school that is on provisional probation, I know we are not that desperate to humilate and degrade ourselves. There is a stigma on the school stating that the kind of students that attend are bad test takers, bad grades, no one else will take them, alot problems. These are the things being said to the staff about the students at their interviews. What kind of mess is that!!!!!!! RETHINK ,RETHINK

I was wondering if anyone started the program on the 5th..and if so how are they liking the school thus far?

I suggest everyone thinking of attending this school, review the post, PA NCLEX Pass Rates updated to 9/2008.

Are you a current student? Im wondering the same thing, did they get there act together? I use to hear different things about the program but it has been quiet. I want to know because I will be ready for nursing school in a few months and I want to make the right decision. :uhoh3:

what happened to their website???

I haven't heard much, would rethink going here though. I declined and feel good about it. I know there are better programs out there. I would be scared of the boards and how hard it may be to get a job when your done. Those few who may have gotten a job got lucky and may have some inside to getting one. I have been told it's harder getting a job know-a-days with just a diploma, that scares me. Some hospitals won't even hire without a BSN, these are nurses that told me this. Yes, I saw the web site today, was wondering if they even started.

More than half of my friends are RN and they all have a jobs. Diploma to Assoc. Degrees. None of them have their BSN and only a few want to get it. They need nurses. Nursing is the only field right now that is still trying to hire and is not firing anyone. People are sick regardless of the enomony. Not sure what type of nursing jobs the RN's you spoke to are looking for but they must not be looking everywhere. They may have to work outside they living area.

Keep trying to reach for your dream. Good luck in whatever program you attend.
