Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

I also have an interview scheduled for Spring UT 2011. I will not deny that just as I am excited, I am hesitant and nervous. If you guys/ ladies don't mind sharing my concern is more of the time load. How many of you are moms, wifes, or will have to maintain a job through school, will have more than half hour commute? I am a mother of 3 and no I do not work but my commute is 45 min flowing traffic. I will also be applying to a local ADN program here at San Jacinto college for the Spring and if I go that route obviously pursue the BSN after that. Thanks for the input, i guess i just need a pep talk that i know others will be in a tight situation one way or another but if given the opportunity we will pull through :D

I'm right there with you!! Mother of three..5,7 and just turned 10 yesterday. I don't know..I was thrilled and then yet so damn scared....whether I can really do it with all this on my plate. But, I always think of what a good role model we are and will be for our children. My kids are already cheering me on..."Way to go Mama....you are doing great". I think it's one of the best ways to show kids how important education is.

The interview can vary in time... When you first arrive you are give a sheet that ask about past medical experience and some general computer questions(don't worry about those because I didn't know a few myself). After that you are given your essay prompt and a mock schedule which they ask you to study because your interviewer will ask you questions like how would you handle your time with such a heavy schedule. For the essay I believe that there are 3 different prompts that you can be given, if you guys look back at the old threads they are listed I can't quite remember them. As far as the interview itself mine was only 15 minutes. The interviewer will ask where and how many times did you take A and P and how many withdrawals do you have and what are the courses. You are also ask questions such as what do a nurse do, why do you want to be a nurse, how do you handle disappointment, what's your definition of compassion and give an example and what sets you apart from everyone else.

After your one on one interview your allow to leave... You should start hearing back from them probably about a month and a half later because they have to complete all interviews before they can start making admission decisions.

My best advice is to relax! Most interviewers are current professors and are very nice and they are your voice to the admissions committee.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Great advice!! Thanks OnMyWay2Be!!

@ onmyway- Thank you so much for the info about the interview. I can't seem to read enough about it....it's all I think about these days.

@hereigo- I am also a mom. my son is 22 months old and he is the reason I have gotten serious about earning my degree. I tip my hat to both you and everpark!!! With only one I feel like going crazy some days. The program will be tough for everyone but you will have the benefit of 3 wonderful cheerleaders to keep you focused. Compared to motherhood nursing will be a piece of cake :-D ~just keep swimming~

@everpark- I attended an info session in July and they said for the Fall semester they had about 2000 applicants (this # is for all applications submitted including people that did not complete the application process), they interviewed about 600 and accepted about 200 students. So about 10% of the applicants get accepted. Hope this helps to give you an idea.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

Keep in mind that many people who are not viable applicants apply. I recall an applicant saying that she would apply with her low GPA because she just might get lucky. Some people think that the minimum GPAs are all that is required. The acceptance rate of qualified applicants is higher than 10%.

Thank you for the information. I'm not sure if I am nervous, probably will be that day. Just trying to get ready. Those of us who have kids need to get together once we get in (lol). I think it will be helpful. I have a 2yr old and a baby on the way! I know its going to be a challenge but I also know I can handle it.

All of you moms are a true inspiration! I wish you all the luck with your interviews.

onmyway~ thanks for all the information.

My kids are 2,4, and 8 and ofcourse add the husband...lol...once they make a final decision it would be great to get with others for study groups etc. I've been a stay at home mom for 3 years now just going to school so it will be hard to adjust to being away from them so many days a week and not being home when they get home from school. LOL. Throughout my prereq's I've been able to schedule around them but in the program i know that will all change. I know it is the best decision and ultimately they are my inspiration in returning to school.

Good Luck to all in the interviews, I think there is a great group here :)

That's awesome news!! I didn't even consider unqualified people. :coollook:

That is exactly how I feel. I am currently working on finding childcare and I am so nervous about putting the kids in day care for long periods of time but at the end, we all benefit from it.

Congrats to everyone who has an interview!! :yeah:I also have an interview on September 16th at 8 am. Is anyone considering taking the park and ride/metrorail? I think I would rather do that than battle with rush hour traffic and parking. I have taken the bus/train to the zoo before, and UT is a block away from the stop after the zoo, i believe.

I have another question: Has anyone decided how they will be paying for everything? I was thinking I will be getting a student loan, but (and this is going to sound really dumb) I am not quite sure how they work. Is it like any other loan, where they give you the full loan amount and you are responsible for paying the respective people? Or do they pay the school for you? I just graduated high school in '09 and have been in community college these past few semesters, so this is the first time I have had to prepare for a major 4 year university.

My last question: What does an average nursing school week look like during your first semester? How many days are you in lecture, lab or clinicals? How long are you in TMC everyday?

I have the sample schedule from last fall for the interview and they said that it was pretty close to what the actual schedule would look like.

Mondays they have 8-10/2-4 for classes, Tuesday 8-12, Wednesday 8-12, Thursday 9-12/1-4, Friday 8-12 for the first two weeks and from the third week on Tuesdays are Reading days and Fridays are 630-330 hospital and on Thursdays they have 5-11pm a class.

maybe someone who went in the spring could say if this is pretty close to what they did.
