Specialty

Although we are just starting out, have any of you thought about what specialty you will go into? I know it's early and we may change our minds, but as of right now........ what specialty are you considering?

Pediatric/Neonatal Nursing! ❤️❤️❤️

I really love the emergency room and the icu :) if I don't change my mind, I want to become an emergency room np!

For me, I was originally interested in Pediatrics, but lately I've been leaning towards Emergency/ICU

How exciting it is to hear where everyone wants to go. I loooove the idea of being in an OR. So my thoughts are still up in the air.

I've been giving this a lot of thought, and honestly it makes me nervous. I know a lot of people change their minds, but the only areas I'm really interested in are NICU and OR. I can't really see myself doing any other area, and don't want to work with adults (unless they are sleeping, lol).

My mom is a nurse but I never really considered it until my daughter was born and she was in the NICU. My heart is really there. So I'm afraid of getting through nursing school, not changing my mind, and not getting my dream job. NICU is very competitive. Anyone else with those concerns if you are only interested in 1 or 2 specialties?

I have also thought of NICU. Both of my children were preemies and that is what motivated me more to go back to school. I never considered the fact that it is a competitive specialty. I'm glad you mentioned it.

right now I want to be in the geriatric side of nursing, I want to make sure the elderly are cared for and I want to do everything possible for their care, also hospice would be a passion. I just want to make things more comfortable/care/attention for the elderly.

I've heard many nurses on this forum say it is competitive. I lurk a lot in the NICU forum. It can be very hard to get in for a new grad. And most other specialties don't translate well because it is working with adults. And babies, premies are not little adults. How you care for them is very different. In school, if I have the opportunity to do any clinicals in the NICU, I'm all over that. I also wanted to look into my local hospital and see if I can volunteer there.

thats a GREAT idea! there is a small HCA hospital by my house. I don't know why i didn't think of that either. Thank you so much. You've brought given me some very good insight to think over. ;)

Right now the ultimate goal is Psych NP, but I won't lie- as a guy, every time the Vanderbilt LifeFlight flies by I think that flight nurse would be absolutely awesome...

I would love to do flight ccn, but have been told I am way too big (6'4", 280). They watch their weight pretty closely on life flights.

Pediatric Oncology nurse is my main goal right now. I'm thinking of maybe even eventually going for my master's in Pediatric Nurse Practitioner if I like the field enough.
