Just curious about L&D nurse getting speciality pay. Do you and what states/areas are you getting it in? We had the discussion about it at work one day and wonder if most L&D nurses get it or not.

Specializes in MICU, SICU, PACU, Travel nursing.

I have never worked at a hospital that offered this. But I have never worked at one that paid extra for ICU either and apparently some do, so its possible they pay a diff for L&D somewhere.

The specialties I have seen paid extra in the hospital are dialysis and OR.

Specializes in ER, Infusion therapy, Oncology.

I have never worked at a hospital that paid specialty pay.

Not around here - you're an RN just like everyone else when it comes to pay.

Once off orientation I get $2.00 more an hour.

I realize that-but not ALL RN's can do what we do. There isn't another place in the hospital that a nurse can be pulled from-unless they have previous experience-to come help us, so in my opinion-we are a speciality area. I was just curious b/c I have heard of other hospitals doing it.

I didn't mean it in the sense that 'a nurse is a nurse is a nurse' - I agree that people can't just float to or from L/D and be expected to function at 100%. I'm just saying that in terms of pay grade, we're qualified as 'RN' and no specialty pay, at least not where I am.

No specialty pay at my hospital. But if you get special certification to do your specialty, then there may be extra pay for that.

Most people are in L&D because they want to be, and there are usually more candidates than positions. If they paid more, then there would be even more competition for it.

This is probably true of most specialties. I think that is why the pay is the same. Supply and demand. Also, if specialties paid more, then no one would want med-surg.

We get $1.10 more an hour. I'm in NC

I have never seen this, although I know there must be some places that do offer sign on bonuses for RNs in short-staffed OB positions. But pretty much, across the board, "specialty pay" has disappeared. You have to understand, EVERY RN has a "specialty" now, including Med-surg! We are so specialized, that few feel any of us merit so-called" specialty pay". Mostly, this has been replaced by sign-on bonuses, which you must accept very carefully. Those that do are becoming increasingly rare in number, sadly. But I believe ALL nurses are "specialists" in their own right. I tend to rack up more pay in off-hours and holiday pay, as well as being perdiem, than any thing else.

I wish you the best. Hopefully, you do find the place still offering specialty pay for such units like OB or ICU.

Thanks for all the comments. I currently work in a hospital in montogmery al and I'm ok with my new grad pay, I was just curious if other places offered "extra" for L & D. Thanks again! :nurse:
