  1. I am a farily new-grad; I've only been out of school for about a year now and I have had this experience also. I can never seem to find the words to say to these mother's or father's, but I realize I never will. I love my job, but I will never get used to having to go through this kind of situation. I'm sorry to hear about this story.
  2. I drive 56 miles one way-about 50 min each way-7p-7a. I have had to pull over and stop b/c I was so tired. I just call someone and let them know where I am. I set the alarm on my phone and take a "power nap". I occasionally stay with people from work too and that helps a ton! Hope it's working out for you.
  3. Man-I'm being jiped-I started out @ $18.50 w/ $4.00 shift diff for nights. Go Alabama! I guess it's a good thing I love my job!
  4. :pI graduated this past dec and I was hired right out of nursing school in L&D. I was actually offered both of the L&D positions I applied for. I took the position at the hospital that delivers about 300 babies a month. I knew from day one in OB class L&D is what I wanted to do and I went for it. It IS tough as a new grad but you know what-it's tough to be a new grad ANYWHERE you go to work, not just in L&D. My orientation lasted about 16 weeks and then I went to nights and I LOVE it. I don't see myself doing anything else. So I suggest if L&D is what you want to do-go for it. Good luck!
  5. I graduated this past dec and I was offered both L&D jobs I applied for, which happen to be the only positions I actually applied for. L&D is what I wanted to do from day one in my OB class and I had the same worry as you have. I knew I was going to try to get a job in Montgonery Al at the big "baby hospital" in town and, thankfully it worked out My orientation lasted about 16 weeks and I worked mainly with one preceptor. I hope everything goes well for you.

Thanks for all the comments. I currently work in a hospital in montogmery al and I'm ok with my new grad pay, I was just curious if other places offered "extra" for L & D. Thanks again!

I realize that-but not ALL RN's can do what we do. There isn't another place in the hospital that a nurse can be pulled from-unless they have previous experience-to come help us, so in my opinion-we are a speciality area. I was just curious b/c I have heard of other hospitals doing it.

Just curious about L&D nurse getting speciality pay. Do you and what states/areas are you getting it in? We had the discussion about it at work one day and wonder if most L&D nurses get it or not.
  9. Any one got any advice on learning the stations? I'm new to this site and I'm not sure if there is already a thread for it-but I sure could use some help! I can never really find the ischial spines to determine where the head is in realtion to the spines!
