Everyone in this room is an O.R. nurse, just curious what TYPE of O.R. nursing you guys do? I am at a small hospital so we do genereral surgery (lap chole, hernia, bowel obstruction, etc) and Ortho cases such as ankle fx, removal hardware, knee/shoulder arthroscopy, etc.
In a few years I hope to work in plastics ( I did my preceptorship at a HUGE University campus, UMASS Memorial Center , and did plastics, ortho, neuro, and some ENT cases). Also did some cardiac which I do not like..haha I love plastics though.
I am not an O.R. RN yet 1 year to go for that... I am a Surgical Technologist, I can scrub everything but open hearts & robotic cases.
I love, love, love, being able to scrub most everything. I am working PRN at an outpatient center while being a full-time nursing student.
My love is Orthopedics, especially trauma ortho. I will be returning to the O.R. full time when I'm done with nursing school.
I am not on a team and I told my job I don't want to be. I do it all, I might go from general to ortho to neuro to cysto in one day. I don't see how some nurses like seeing the same thing day in and day out. I get bored really quick. My floor has: ortho, neuro, cysto, general, some plastics, robots, rare gyn, breasts, and l and d cases. ENT and bari cases were moved we are supposed to start doing livers. We have a floor specially for breast, one specifically for gyn. Across the street is outpatient cases. My facility is huge and has a place for everything. CVOR is on my floor but they have their own team and so does the eyes. WE dont get to scrub just circulate.

I am very strong in general, and I also do pretty well in gyn, although I hate that service. I can get by in most other services with the more basic procedures except for hearts. I've never even seen one, but I do sometimes work with the CV surgeons when they do thoracotomies or AAA repairs. The longer I work in the OR, the more I want to become well rounded so that I can go into any room and do any case.
