Specialities in the Operating Room...

Everyone in this room is an O.R. nurse, just curious what TYPE of O.R. nursing you guys do? I am at a small hospital so we do genereral surgery (lap chole, hernia, bowel obstruction, etc) and Ortho cases such as ankle fx, removal hardware, knee/shoulder arthroscopy, etc.

In a few years I hope to work in plastics ( I did my preceptorship at a HUGE University campus, UMASS Memorial Center , and did plastics, ortho, neuro, and some ENT cases). Also did some cardiac which I do not like..haha I love plastics though.

Cardiac. Some time Thoracic. Manly open heart: CABG, Valves, Vads, Transplants. Peds and adults.

I'm still a newbie and don't have a specialty yet. I have circulated and scrubbed in ENT and general, and dabbled slightly in plastics. I really like ENT - fast-paced, and it really is the bread and butter of the OR services being a pediatric hospital. One of the veteran scrub techs told me she "can see me working in the heart room or neuro" but I don't know if I will like that - seems pretty intense and I hear those docs (at this particular hospital) can be tough to work with sometimes. We'll see. My educator appears to want to make me a "team leader" in ENT, which I would be cool with! But for now, I want to get a taste of everything. I would probably prefer to be bounced everywhere and try to get good at everything before they specialize me; would make me more marketable.

Neuro. Peds and adults; about 50/50 craniotomies/spines. Ortho sometimes (backs and trauma). Plastics if they're desperate.

Most of my experience is in Ortho but at my new job, I do general, cysto and GYN too. The only specialty I really don't like is GYN.

as my name here suggests, I primarily work with the daVinci robotics system for general, urology, and gyn cases. I dabble in everything except hearts. I LOVE plastics but don't get to see much of it where I am working now. I also feel blessed to have learned to scrub cases as well as circulate. :)

When I worked evening shift, if it came through the doors I did it, except for hearts. Now I'm on the heart team. Occasionally help out in other specialities, but I prefer the consistency and working with a small team.

I like trauma ortho because every fracture is so different. I have scrubbed almost everything else, some hearts and some neuro. I have found IMHO, is that most procedures are almost always the same. ENT, plastics, gyn, uro the procedures don't change much from one time to another. Don't get me wrong because all of them are important but not unique. Give me a good old multiple trauma fracture and that can get the blood(mine) flowing.

Breasts, Plastics, Gyne (Gyne/Onc; Uro/Gyne; General Gyne). I'm currently working at our Women's hospital.

Hi all! I work @ Shands Univ of Florida in Gainesville, FL... although I do float to all services... my primary home is in general (PBS and MIS mostly, trauma, transplants, and ortho). I am looking to do some traveling to Las Vegas and Chicago to attend seminars / conferences.... any suggestions?

Ortho is really my specialty, done it forever, and it's where I am the most comfortable. Love ortho, not sure why. ENT is my second love that service as well. I can do anything really, but I really, really dislike gyn...

Ortho, podiatry, hands, spine, and plastics

I am very strong in general, and I also do pretty well in gyn, although I hate that service. I can get by in most other services with the more basic procedures except for hearts. I've never even seen one, but I do sometimes work with the CV surgeons when they do thoracotomies or AAA repairs. The longer I work in the OR, the more I want to become well rounded so that I can go into any room and do any case.
