Hello All,
I wanted to start this thread for those fellow applicants that applied for the Southwestern Community College Fall 2016 ADN Program. Not sure If this is a little late but I have yet to receive my notification regarding being invited or not for the program. As you can probably assume, I am extremely nervous right now and have been ever since I submitted my application. I've been in contact with Martha over there and she informed me that they were currently showing attention to the Step-Up program and they should be completed by this week. After completing their portion, the remainder of the letter will be sent out.
Has any one been offered a spot in the ADN program for the fall 2016 cohort yet?
@thatperson my sister only applied at swc she worked for the director as a CNA with 72 points she was accepted. She also didn't have to prove profiency on her second language. I know another person who got the points by just taking one second language course I wish I knew because I too can understand, read, and write the words of Spanish I just can't speak it "professionally as they request. However the lady who took my friends application went based of the race and asked him if he spoke the language he said he took one class and he understands the language they gave him the three points. Does anyone else know about them not really checking for the actual proficiency? I turned my applicationin honestly however it does worry me that I have heard this now more than once!
@brandyP hi! Yes. when I had my SEP with a counselor at SWC I asked them how we can prove we speak another language or for proficiency. She frankly said "they'll take your words for it. If you say you are proficient, they'll take your word for it"
So if you put that you are proficient, I am sure they will give you three points.
Where did you work as a CNA? haha I have been trying to find a job as a CNA at a hospital as I think one year of nursing home is enough for me. I worked noc shift for a year. I've been looking for a hospital job and it is so difficult haha. I mean I think I am fine working at a nursing home but I want to move on haha. I guess I shouldn't be choosy when applying for a job.
Well I should have put that I can speak it, because everyone is basically doing that! I'm just worried that in the program they will have you work where you need to speak the language you claimed during clinicals oh well. I have my CNA but I'm a Pharmacy Tech I don't work as a CNA I got the certificate for the points for swc since it's so close to me. Palomar will take my pharmacy hours for experience and my license for allied help swc is way different
Hey you guys yea Iam Puerto Rican and honestly you need to be able to speak it not just read it or write it I talked to the director and she said that people who lie will get caught because they are put in a situation in the hospital where in a life threatening situation need to speak it and if they don't know how and put they spoke a foreign language there out of the program .. I had to provide documents from my employer saying they knew I was bilingual and spoke it .. brandy you did the right thing by not saying you did .. you have to be fluent in Spanish or whatever language not just understand some parts .. and people who want the extra points for it and lie it will come back on them
I think for that reason that completely defeats the purpose of a second language course. For my application I put the Spanish course I took. I did not even put the language that I speak at home because I have on my transcript a foreign language course. I took Spanish 101, 102, and 201. Which was enough to get me the points. With that being said. I do NOT speak Spanish at all. I got an A in all those course because I did the work. TBH I don't even know how to say a full a sentence. But I'm sure I will get 3 points for the language because I have proof on my transcript that I took the foreign language course. I think the language points are very subjective. That's why I think they should do like partial points. For having spoken the language would get the full points, and for taking the course should be half the points.
Hello @court619
Yes that's exactly why I didn't claim it because I knew that would happen in the program. It's like a job application if you lie you will be caught. Like I said reading, writing, and understanding Spanish is completely different from knowing how to speak the language. I wouldn't put fluent if I couldn't help someone out in a professor that requests I have the patients best interest.
@thatperson most of the apps ask that you have a letter from your employer on company "letterhead" verifying employment. Since most schools want at least 100 hrs im having them sign and date with the current hours I've worked and what my position is etc.
We were talking earlier on this thread....... I ended up not being able to apply to grossmont because I'm still waiting to get my third hep b series and didn't realize they are the only school out of the programs I'm applying to that requires all immunizations before the program starts. Hoping ill get into MiraCosta or Palomar!

how many of you believe that those believe 75 points think we have a chance?
I'm thinking we do due to the fact that if the average was 75 well then a combo of mixed scores ranging from 70-80+ would create that average correct me if I'm wrong? I really hope I have a chance!
teas 76
points at swc 73
