Seton Austin residency summer 2019 cohort
Hey there! I applied for NICU and mom/baby at seton medical center, and picu and peds surgical trauma at dcmc. My nicu app changed to “under review” so I’m hoping to get an interview. I’m coming from California but precepted in the NICU and work as a PCA in peds. Congrats to those that already have interviews, I was bummed I couldn’t attend the open house.

withholding medications ethical dilemma
I can understand why you feel that you are not violating HIPAA, and as registry CNA you may not have been trained on this information because you are not directly employed by the facility. In my nursing program we need to look at the MAR and H/P in order to complete the requirements for our clinical paperwork. This is permitted in clinical because we are logged in as nursing students under the EHR and are providing nursing care to our patient(s) and charting on them. I was a float pool CNA at my former hospital (I was a sitter many many times). As a CNA at that facility we didn't have access to the MAR or nursing orders. Looking at the MAR and going through the patient's history is the responsibility of the nurse. As the sitter your responsibility is to communicate the patient's needs with the nurse. I am now a PCA at another hospital and in my orientation is was stressed that PCA's are not to look through the MAR, notes, H/P, or anything in the chart that doesn't have to do with the direct care that you have provided to that patient. Doing so is considered "snooping" (exact words used by the facility) and your account can and will be flagged and could lead to termination for HIPAA violation. We can even get in trouble for being in a chart for too long, and it is stressed that we shouldn't have more than one chart open at once. Basically get in, get out, chart vitals, I/Os, etc. and log out of the chart immediately. You have to stay within your scope as the CNA/Sitter, as hard as that may be now that you are a nursing student and are able to start seeing the bigger picture. Stay humble, and advocate for your patient as much as you can, but do it within your scope and communicate with the nurse rather than "snooping" through the chart.

What happens if you are injured on your way to clinical due to weather?
Have you started your program yet? Or is this info you received at orientation? This statement right here ^^^^ is a red flag. You need to humble yourself a bit, as you will quickly find your attitude and sense of entitlement won't be received well in the nursing profession. Every program should have a student handbook or contract of some kind that you are required to sign and agree to when you accept your spot in the program. Weather isn't a valid excuse to miss clinical, but you have exaggerated that policy to the extreme with your "what ifs" and snow storm/injury/sue the school scenario. If its too dangerous for school to be in session on campus, your clinical will be cancelled.

MiraCosta Palomar Fall 2017 ADN
You're welcome! And thank you, its hard to believe I am already almost halfway through the program. I was also an alternate at MCC and got a call a month later and was offered a seat. Almost everyone in my cohort that was an alternate ended up getting a spot, so you should be ok :) If you don't get a spot by orientation make sure you attend and show them how ready you are to start the program! They should give out the rest of the seats at orientation. Worst case scenario you start in the spring I know its too late now, but my advice to anyone who has to decide between schools would be the accept your seat at each school and then decline the seat once you make a decision. Its not uncommon and it will give you more time to make such a big decision :). The schools will take people right before the program starts because they have to fill the cohort so you aren't "taking" anyone's seat.

Mira Costa Palomar spring 2018 ADN program
Hey guys! My friend also applied to your cohort and she told me that they said the Spring point distribution is usually a lot lower than fall. Last semester was incredibly high for some reason. If you are 80 + you could definitely still get into MiraCosta :). Good luck again! P.s. I had the same app experience at Palomar. No one was even there to take my application, and I heard they don't go through it in front of your like MiraCosta does. As long as you turned it in and went through their checklist you should be fine.

Mira Costa Palomar spring 2018 ADN program
Good luck to you guys! I was accepted at both MiraCosta and Palomar for Fall 2017 and decided to go to MiraCosta! We start on August 21st :). I went to both orientations and can tell you that both are really strong programs. In first semester, Palomar's schedule has you on campus 5 days a week (one day is open lab that they expect you to go to) for the first 8 weeks, and then you go down to 2 days I believe plus one day of clinical. MiraCosta is 4 days for the first 8 weeks and then 1-2 days plus one day of clinical. Honestly you will be happy with either program. I have heard that Palomar is pretty strict and I did get that impression during orientation. MiraCosta seemed to have a little more of a laid back vibe from the staff, but still just as intense of a program. I took my pre-reqs at MiraCosta and really love the school, so I just felt more comfortable going with MiraCosta :). Points wise I had 88pts at MiraCosta (and I was originally an alternate), and I had 84 points at Palomar and was accepted on the first round of notifications. I don't know much about Grossmont, but have also heard it is a strong program, and they have a new SIM lab. Generally I think it is a little easier to get into Grossmont than Palomar or MiraCosta as they accept more students per cohort. Also for any of your app questions at MiraCosta you should email their secretary, her info is on the nursing page. She answers quickly and is very helpful!

2017 Laptop Recommendations
I've been researching this as well and have found some great videos on how to use the surface pro 3 for students. You can get one on Amazon barely used or refurbished for as low as $350, the laptops with more gigs are about 500-800! One note allows you to take notes and record the lectures at the same time. You can also draw diagrams and go back to what you were drawing/writing on the recording, so you can listen to what the professor was talking about at the exact time you were taking those notes.

MiraCosta Palomar Fall 2017 ADN
MiraCosta does have some hybrid courses but you are still in class 4 days per week for the first half of first semester and then 3 days including clinical the second half. But on Monday the class is only from 1-3pm and Tuesday Wednesday Thursday's are 9-1:30(tue) and 9-3:35(w/th). The second half of the semester you have class two days a week and then clinical for 10 hrs on wed or thurs. If you email the nursing secretary and ask about the schedule she can send it to you. Or if you message me I can send it to you. She said it's tentative but I don't think it will change much if it does. Palomar didn't have any online classes listed on their schedule for first semester.

MiraCosta Palomar Fall 2017 ADN
Thank you @YJLmom! After going to Palomar's orientation yesterday I am feeling the stress. They definitely have a very strong program. However, after comparing their schedule with MiraCosta's, mcc is going to work better for me and my work schedule. Ive also had a great experience at MiraCosta doing my pre reqs. I'm pretty positive I am going to choose MiraCosta!

MiraCosta Palomar Fall 2017 ADN
Haven't decided yet. I wish Mccs orientation was earlier but it isn't until July! In just looking at the courses for each school it looks like Palomar is more concept based where they integrate classes across the lifespan (med surge 2, maternal, and peds are all one class) Mcc has each class separate. I'm also starting a new job at a hospital working nights so the schedules will probably play a factor for me as well. But I'm really excited for orientation at Palomar tomorrow!

MiraCosta Palomar Fall 2017 ADN
My friend messaged me today and told me that 8 people didn't RSVP to MiraCosta, meaning most of the alternates should get a spot in the program. Well I just received a call today that I have been admitted for Fall! I'm still trying to decide between Palomar and MiraCosta but I'm happy to no longer be an alternate :)
