Sorry I got the RN

Published

I was an LPN who wanted more, so I went back to school for the RN. Now I can't find an RN position and I have slammed the door

on being an LPN. I should have waited to take the boards and continued on as an LPN for as long as I could.

I have LTC experience as an LPN, but now that I hold the RN license, I cannot find a job, not even in LTC.

I have wanted to be a nurse for so long, and now I feel like I have screwed myself.

Sorry, just venting.

Have you ever seen the documentary about the history of nursing? There was a time when nurses could not get hired at all because nursing school was a scam for hospitals to get free nurses!

Our profession has seen many ups and downs, we are stuck in another down but this will pass eventually. I know this doesn't help you but I am glad you vented!

Hope an "up" comes soon. I don't want to lose my skills.

Hopefully something will come up. At this point, I will take anything that comes along.

Don't feel that way, something will come your way, what area do you live in?

Sorry this has happened to you, especially since it is always advised to get an RN license to improve one's job opportunities. Ironic that you found it to be the opposite. Hope things turn around for you soon.

I live in jersey and there are no jobs around. My youngest is in high school and my husband has a good job in this area, so moving to a location that is hiring nurses is really not an option for me. I have even considered getting my license for PA and DE, but not sure if I am going to be able to find work there either.

I am just outside atlantic city and I know that atlanticare and shore memoral hospital is hiring.

I actually know somebody that works at Shore Memorial. She even gave me some contact names to send my resume to and still nothing. Not even an interview.

As for Atlanticare, they require the BSN and I am only ASN. I am taking classes towards my BSN, but that doesn't help much now.

Have you looked into the jobs giving flu fascinations for the flu season around Walmart and stores like that. I was speaking to one of the nurses who was doing that and she said the process is easy and pretty much done online. I do not know that name of the company but I am sure you can look it up online or even just walk into Walmart and ask someone. I hope this helps.

Tried applying to flu clinics, did not get a call back from them either. If I were young and single again, I would pack up and move across country if I had to, but I have a family and cannot do that.

How about the LTC you worked at as an LPN? They wouldn't take you? A lot of LPN's I know that got their RN was able to keep their job but of course get paid as an RN.

Most places will not allow you to work below your highest license. If you become an RN and your facility only carries so many RN's on their payroll and there is no room for you, out you go. I know a few of my classmates who worked in hospitals as aides while in school, and lost their jobs as soon as they passed the boards.
