I had my orientation today to volunteer in a local hospital. I asked for the Labor and Delivery dept and amazingly enough a spot opened up for me. It's so new the Volunteer coordinator doesn't even know what my responsibilities will be. If anyone knows please let me know.

Isn't it a good feeling? I had my interview today also. I wanted periop and they gave it to me. Clappy hands for both of us! :)

Are you in the Atlanta area as well?

Congratulations! I am in CA (med/surg unit), but I usually answer call lights, fill the glove boxes in the rooms, pick up supplies/food trays if there are special orders, empty charts when the patient has been discharged, and other random thinks like set up flowers the have been delivered and I even helped a man set up a new laptop that his mom sent him because he had never used one before :)

Which hospital are you at?

Wow!!! You're getting to do a lot. I just love watching a newborn get a bath some like the feeling and some don't!!! Lol!!!

How do you volunteer at the hospital? Do you have to fill out an application like for a job? Just curious. Is there a set amount of hours you volunteer?

Yes, at my hospital I filled the application out online and submitted it. Someone called me the next day. There is a 2 step PPD that they do along with MMR test. After that orientation was setup and I was out on the floor. Check online for the hospital nearest you to see what the requirements are. Good luck!!!

Sorry, that was super random of me to ask like that. Lol I asked which hospital because I am also in the Atlanta area, I'm at Grady Memorial. I, too, applied for Labor and Delivery, but they require some sort of recommendation for that unit... I am in mother/baby ... it is VERY dull, I feel like I'm not helping at all.

Are you a pre-nursing student?

I have an meet & greet next week then orientation in May. I can pretty much pick an area b/c they could use the extra help....hummm...what would be a good one?

That's awesome! In our med center, L&D volunteers typically stuff welcome packets and help nurses with clerical and random stuff, honestly. I am a snack pass volunteer at the med center and I love it because I get to really interact with the patients. I also volunteer at the Children's Hospital in the NICU. I rock babies for 2 hours a week! It's awesome. My interest is PICU or peds heme-onc, so I love my positions. I get to snack pass in the cancer hospital and on BMT floors, and the NICU is an intensive care setting. And I love babies. I hope you love volunteering!

I'm at Northside Atlanta!!! There wasn't a spot in L and D before I applied. I mean the week before I applied they sent a request for a volunteer. I am going to go from dept to dept in L&D. Right now I help out in Recovery I am hoping to get placed somewhere around delivery. I thoroughly enjoy my time there. We have a free meal from the cafeteria every four hours you volunteer. The food is awesome!!!!! There is even counseling and a credit union available. I currently vol for four hours every Wednesday once this semester is over I'm hoping to go maybe three days a week.
