Social media sucks.
Seems like many people on the nursing forums(not all) hate nursing. Yet when I visit a real hospital with real nurses they seem to love their jobs and tell me they enjoy it.
Why is social media different than the real world? They tell me LPN is in demand and still good to get a job. In social media you here..."you will never find a job as an LPN!"
Are those nurses in hospitals lying? ANY career will be bashed on social media and it sucks.
I want to give social media the SMACK DOWN because its mostly lies and deception of what really goes on in the real world. There are just crummy, trashy, negative people that come in the forums to spew venom because they are unhappy people......they will trash any job.
JustBeachyNurse-Have you done your research? I have.
A friend of mine just became a LPN in Florida...and he said there were plenty of LPN jobs in Tampa, Orlando, and Miami.
I'm iOhio and I see many LPN jobs in Columbus(hospitals and nursing homes). I know of several LPN's working in Phoenix and they never complained about finding work. Chicago has a plethora of LPN jobs too. Joliet area as well.
That is four states. That means before you generalize -- back it up with some data. This is why social media sucks. Too many generalizations and BS.
This is research? A friend of yours said there were plenty of jobs in Florida, you see many LPN jobs (what? as listed job openings?) and you know of several LPNs in Phoenix but know of any complaints about finding work?
Just so you know, this isn't research and you don't have data. So don't demand it of others. The poster to whom you're being disrespectful is a known and respected poster. You don't even know enough not to use your real name.
I'm here because I wanted the truth!!I come here to be nice and honest and ask innocent questions. Yet I see posts that saying "Nursing sucks! " "Don't do it!" " You will be a whipping boy!" You will hate nursing!" "There are no jobs!" "Stay away!" "Everyone will think your gay if you are a murse"
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Are these white trash trailer parks residents? I am cautious now who I receive information from on here because everyone hides behind their computers. They could be trolls. I will just visit more hospitals and nursing homes since I can talk to people face to face.
If you came here to be nice, you've missed your mark.
Dear OP,
Why don't you start here for your data on lpns and lvns?
Lots of prospects in nursing homes all across the country.
This is true where I live as well; there are no lvns working the floor in the hospitals.
And yes, the last three acute care hospitals I've worked at have stopped hiring of LPNs, begun to phase existing LPNs out of all but rehab positions, and one has required all ADN and diploma RNs to sign contracts pledging to obtain their BSN by a certain date or face termination.
Depending on the state's nurse practice act, in some places this is simple practicality- if LPNs are not permitted to perform common functions of the acute care nursing role (and in some states they are not), it's not sensible to hire them to those roles. In other places it's part of the push towards universal BSN-RN staffing for magnet and marketing reasons.
There are still LPNs/LVNs working in acute care in some places, but many of them are grandfathered in and stuck in terms of job mobility- they can keep their existing bedside acute care job, but can't find a similar one if they wish to change organizations or specialties.
The writing is on the wall- most acute care facilities are moving towards higher minimum levels of education and licensure, not lower. LTC still employs many LPNs but other options are relatively limited, and even after bridging to ADN-RN in many places, acute care positions may be scarce- many larger cities have gone all-BSN for new grad positions.
This is the reality of the trends in healthcare. That it doesn't match your hopes is unfortunate but that doesn't make it lies or trolling.
I am speaking from experience. I work ltc. I love my job and ltc. I also recognize that lpns have been phased out of hospitals around here. Yes I could go work at a clinic but I would make several dollars less per hour. I encourage you to get your rn. I eventually would like to get my rn. Right now I am happy with my lpn license and time with my family took precedence over my rn degree.

I have an idea, why don't you start out getting your RN through an ADN program. Many community colleges have this. Then, when you start working, go for your BSN online. Many nurses have done that. This way, you would earn more money than the LPN (which you have stated you would be in nursing for the money) as well as have more job possibilities when you graduate?
When you come onto a social media site and ask questions, you will get replies that you aren't going to like. You then have choices to make.
1. Listen to those replies and see if there is any worth in them. 2. Ignore them. 3 Leave the site
