Social media and nursing don't mix

Nurses Career Support

Published

Social media sucks.

Seems like many people on the nursing forums(not all) hate nursing. Yet when I visit a real hospital with real nurses they seem to love their jobs and tell me they enjoy it.

Why is social media different than the real world? They tell me LPN is in demand and still good to get a job. In social media you here..."you will never find a job as an LPN!"

Are those nurses in hospitals lying? ANY career will be bashed on social media and it sucks.

I want to give social media the SMACK DOWN because its mostly lies and deception of what really goes on in the real world. There are just crummy, trashy, negative people that come in the forums to spew venom because they are unhappy people......they will trash any job.

Are you talking about SMYS? Social media draws some idiotic people. You should research the areas that you're looking to seek employment rather than depending on the opinions of others.

LPNs are limited by scope of practice and employment opportunities in much of the country. This is reality.

A few areas will hire LPNs in hospital but it's an exception more than the rule.

Have you done your research? I have.

A friend of mine just became a LPN in Florida...and he said there were plenty of LPN jobs in Tampa, Orlando, and Miami.

I'm iOhio and I see many LPN jobs in Columbus(hospitals and nursing homes). I know of several LPN's working in Phoenix and they never complained about finding work. Chicago has a plethora of LPN jobs too. Joliet area as well.

That is four states. That means before you generalize -- back it up with some data. This is why social media sucks. Too many generalizations and BS.

Oh my... *grabs popcorn*

Many hospitals (at least in my area) are phasing out LPNs. The floors consist of PCTs/CNAs and RNs. Not to say that it's impossible to find as an LPN, but you will find more LPN positions in LTC.

People are much more likely to take the effort to complain than to compliment. It's the same thing with the cursed Press Gainey surveys- the people who had an okay stay don't really care to fill it out, but you can bet those with negative feedback are jumping at the chance to send it in.

This is also a safe place for nurses to vent- how many people that we live with or spend our time outside of work with understand the trials and tribulations as well as the joys and success of nursing? It's also a way to vent without having to worry about having our names attached to our comments.

The job market is different in different parts of the country. See above as to why you see more posts about difficulties finding a job than success stories.

Social media is people's personal experiences and perceptions. And how you interpret their postings is based on your experiences and perceptions.

I've done my research. LPNs are limited by the nurse practice act in their scope of practice, how limited depends on the state. I did not say LPNs were lacking jobs around the country. I said there are very few acute care hospital jobs for LPNs and I know of only a few states that permit LPNs to function efficiently in a critical care setting.

LPNs can work in sub acute, in some states long term acute care (but not all as it's often critical care level of skills needed), long term care, assisted living, pediatric long term care, out patient, some surgical centers, urgent care, acute rehab, sub acute rehab, in some states school nursing (but not in the north east as RN-BSN with poexcept 1:1, private duty, hospice, skilled home health, ventilator units, substance abuse, psychiatric partial & inpatient, detox units and more.

Are there more opportunities especially clinical ladder in acute care for an RN or RN/BSN? Absolutely.

If "social media sucks" so bad why are you here?

PS you cannot equate job postings with job opportunities especially as an inexperienced new grad, whether RN or LPN. Many facilities post jobs per protocol but have no intention of hiring an external candidate as they already have a qualified internal applicant.

What is your issue? There are different job opportunities for LVNs in every state.

I'm here because I wanted the truth!!

I come here to be nice and honest and ask innocent questions. Yet I see posts that saying "Nursing sucks! " "Don't do it!" " You will be a whipping boy!" You will hate nursing!" "There are no jobs!" "Stay away!" "Everyone will think your gay if you are a murse"

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Are these white trash trailer parks residents? I am cautious now who I receive information from on here because everyone hides behind their computers. They could be trolls. I will just visit more hospitals and nursing homes since I can talk to people face to face.

Well people come to forums to vent. Where I've worked some people have said it sucked or they just kept it to themselves. If people come on asking for advice, everyone has different opinions.

I went back and looked. You've participated in three threads here (including this one), all three of which you've started. Scrolling through the responses you've been given, I see well-reasoned and honest answers from established nurses of all backgrounds, who have politely given you feedback based on their experiences, as well as presenting you with options you might not have explored.

You started a post about going into nursing for the money, indicating that you were looking to pursue an LPN license. Great. Considering your emphasis on money (in the title and the post), as well as your educational background, is it any wonder that people suggested ADN and BSN programs, to get an RN license?

You seem set on getting licensed as an LPN regardless of whatever answers you see on the board. So why ask for opinions here, and then get upset about people "generalizing" (which is what you're doing yourself when you call posters "crummy, trashy, negative people" and saying "social media sucks")?

Why would you come here seeking opinions but then be so set in your career path?
