SNOTTY MA claiming to be a nurse!!!!

Published

:angryfire i had to take my 11 month old to the immediate care. he has chicken pox. the ma is talking and my 4 year old asks if her brother is going to get a shot. the ma says, "no, he won't get a shot." my 4 year old (who can read) says, "how do you know?" the ma says because "i'm the nurse and i know." my daughter looks at her name tag and says "m.a., that doesn't spell nurse. my mom is a nurse and her name tag says l.p.n. your name tag has to say l.p.n or r.n. to be a nurse." ( i about died laughing(inside) but i was also embarrassed by my precocious 4 year old.) then the ma says to my daughter, "if you're mom is such a great nurse, she wouldn't have to be here with me taking care of your brother."

ok. w** t the h**l did you just say? fire starts rolling out of my ears. i stated to her, "that is your opinion. i am here to receive treatment from a dr., for my son, not treatment from you. i am sorry if my daughter offended you, but she is correct. you cannot represent yourself as a nurse, you do not have a nursing license. a medical assistant is not the same as a nurse. your attitude is very rude and i feel that you need a better bedside manner. please do not ever speak to me or to any other patient in that manner."

she slams down her equipment and states, "i cannot work with all these know-it-all mothers that are nurses." she then storms out of the room. the dr. who had been in the hallway about to come in the door, states to me,"i apologize for her behaviour. that was uncalled for" ummm, yeah, do you think so?

Seriously?

I did an 8 week internship at 40 hrs/week, plus 6 semesters with 200 clinical hours each semester.

Well, the nursing students that come to my unit spend 2 hours looking up information in their one patients chart, do about 2 hours of patient care, and then spend 2 hours talking about it in "post conference". So if all that counts, I guess they would get more "clinical experience".

My comment was for the poster that said MA's get little to no training at all.

So why is that nurses seem to hate MA's? I mean all MA's, not just the one that makes stupid, unprofessional comments in front of patients?

I don't hate MA's. Granted, I've only ever dealt with one, at my GI doctor's office. She's fantastic- returns phone calls in a timely fashion, gets pre-auths approved in record time like a mofo, can find anything in my chart in 0.2 seconds, calls me with all of my lab results the day after they're drawn, and is a pleasure to talk to.

And she's never called herself a nurse.

I think what people here resent is MA's who refer to and let others call them nurses when they are not. They haven't earned the title of nurse and should not be lying to the public. It's disrespectful to nurses and it's illegal.

I see your a nurse now. You need to be able to stick up for yourself and not allow surgeons to lie to patients like that.

Whatever. Let's all cat fight and call names.

I know I'm a nurse. I don't need validation from a pre-schooler to support me. Maybe the MA does have to put up with a bunch of crap from everyone who walks through the door thinking they know more than she does. Sound familiar?

I differ in my opinion. I feel it is totally appropriate to call someone on a lie. If my child catches someone in a lie, it is appropriate to address that. I have taught my children to be fair, honest, and polite. I feel she stated honestly and respectfully the things I have taught her. I do not feel she was inappropriate or said anything inappropriate to the MA. I do not think it is appropriate to for an MA to lie just because it is a child.

Unfortunately it is the mentality of some of the MAs~that they indeed are side by side with LPNs. Recently layed off, I am now on the wait list for nursing school, but am taking the MA course while I wait to brush up in med field (havent worked in it for 7 years). A majority of fellow students in my classes think like that rude MA. I get in heated discussions with them stating: if that were the case you would be taking more medical classes instead of office classes, etc...etc...

Kudos to your kid! I am a CMA and I get a wee bit ticked when I get referred to as a nurse. I went to school for 9 mos but I didnt take the NCLEX, so therefore I am a CMA and not a nurse. Also that MA with an attitude needs to pull her head out of her ass! The place where I did my externship had tons of MA's who thought they were nurses and were practicing under the same scope of practice as RN's and NP's and it ticked me off and I was uncomfortable. The MA there who was precepting me once signed a form for my school with "RN" after her name, but when she signed my eval. form she put "CMA" after her name! HOW WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!! Also that place had MA's calling in Rx's and writing out Rx's and then giving them to the Dr to sign! ANOTHER NO NO!

Well, you know what "they" say.....out of the mouth of babes!

Truth sometimes hurts.

Also, the last initial in LPN, the "N", stands for Nurse, as does the "N" in RN. I just can't get the word "nurse" from Certified Medical Assistant. I have nothing against CMAs, but they are not nurses. LPNs and RNs busted their humps getting that degree and passing their boards. When I worked as a unit secretary, I always answered the phone and introduced myself as a secretary and did always politely corrected those who referred to me as a nurse. I had not earned that title and did not want any confusion. My RN co-workers always kidded me about emphasizing my title of secretary. Now, they kid me about always answering the phone as Cindy, RN.

Oh my goodness, I just had to comment on this thread. I am now an RN, but started out in the medical field as a CMA then LPN. I have to say that the MA in the office was way out of line. When I worked as an MA, I never allowed the doctors to refer to me as a nurse, even if that meant ignoring them when they said it. To answer some of the previous posters, yes, part of this mentality starts in the schools. The teachers in my MA program would paint actual nurses in a negative light with comments such as "why does the ANA pick on us", or "we are just as well trained as nurses". If I knew then what I know now I would have said something witty like "then why don't we get licensed?, why don't we have a local certifying board?, better yet, I would have skipped it and went to nursing school!

BTW, medical assistants are taught to write out scripts for the MDs to sign.

Also I remember in MA school that "we are going to be doing most of the things that RN's do" Well that is so not true!

and lpns don't have as much responsibilty/work as hard so aren't real "nurses". Would you not find that a wee bit petty and a lot *****.

Then why are they called Licensed Practical NURSES??

OK, if LPN and MA are not interchangeable in a clinic setting, then why do most the job postings I see for clinics say "LPN/CMA wanted"? Don't believe me? Go to allina.com.

And since I am now a RN, I am well aware of the differences in education.

I think you need to get over it. CMAs are NOT LPNs. Those job posts are just stating that they would take a CMA or a LPN. The two jobs are not the same.
