smallpox vaccine gone awry

hi kids!

in my area where i live, a young toddler and his mother have contracted vaccinea virus from his father, who received a smallpox vaccine before being deployed.

his father is in the army.

i am wondering a couple of things:

1) do you remember the post 911 scare that we all went through, and we as first responders were being told by the government/homeland security that we should all receive the smallpox vaccine?

2) how many of you were wary of that mandate?

3) how many of you went ahead and received the vaccine?

4). did you have any adverse reaction, or mild reaction?

5) after reading this story, do you think the benefits outweigh the risks?

6) how much do you think you know about vaccines, whether pneumoccocal, hpv vaccine, or hepatitis b, or influenza?

chicago (ap) - a two-year-old boy and his mother have contracted a rare, life-threatening infection from his soldier father's smallpox vaccination, according to a published report.

the boy developed a virulent rash over 80 per cent of his body earlier this month after coming in contact with his father, who had been vaccinated before he was to be deployed overseas by the u.s. army, the chicago tribune reported saturday.

------------------------------------------------------------------------now...the mother also had reaction....but there's no indication by this story or any others, that she had eczema....so how did she contract this disease....possibly through sexual or close physical contact???

doesn't this make you wonder if this stuff is truly safe?

I'm not surprised. No, I didn't receive the vaccine and I think the hysteria over this was absurd. I actually had the smallpox vaccine at age 6 anyways. I'm so sick of our government and the ridiculous hysteria they whipped up after 911, now we are stuck in Iraq, and the death toll is rising daily, not to mention the 1000s of civilians who died there who were not terrorists.

This is one of the known possible complications. The soldier should have been told to limit physical contact for the month after receiving the vax....keep the site covered and don't touch it, don't let anyone else touch it, etc. Just like herpes, the weeping lesions are contagious.

Our hospital talked about vaxing the front line staff, which would have included me. If there were a genuine threat (as we thought at the time) I would have taken it. Better to take it and have to be careful for a month than not take it, be exposed to the disease, and risk infecting my family.

I mean, what a ridiculous example of an unneeded vaccine, of a disease that WAS successfully wiped off the planet, but the government subjects our servicemen and women to it, on the slim chance of some terrorist getting his hands on some smallpox that was locked away in a vault somewhere. They have done more damage to these men and women with their constant harebrained scemes over the years, not to mention stupid military escapades they've embarked on at a terrible loss of life and limb! These men and women totally lose their civil rights when they enter the military.

My husband received the shot prior to deploying to Iraq a several years ago. We had twins under the age of 2 at the time. The instructions were to keep it covered, don't share towels and avoid close close contact for a period of time ( I don't remember what the time line was). We observed all the precautions and didn't have a problem. But then again my children didn't suffer from eczema, so I guess maybe that's what the mitigating factor was.

Many people say that 'Gulf War Syndrome' was the result of the ridiculous quantity of vaccines that the troops were forced to receive, which was an assault on their immune systems of such magnatude that it caused damage.

The government has always used the military as gunea pigs in this way, just check your history. They did it with nuclear testing, agent orange, LSD experiments, etc and so forth.

There is actually a very good article on the web that speaks of soldiers actually dying after being injected with a TYPHUS vaccine that was being developed during WWI....this was done at Walter Reed...(you know...the walls crumbling, rat infested hospital down the street from the White House??) This vaccine was what actually caused the purported Spanish Flu epidemic....something many people do not know...that it was a VACINNE INDUCED epidemic....

No, the smallpox vaccine is not the safest vaccine in the world. Smallpox is much, much worse.

When they were talking about vaccinating health care personnel, they talked about giving it to older staff/docs; we all had smallpox vaccine as kids, and were less likely to have a big reaction to it. A logical approach, believe it or not! Who knew that could happen!!

Before they d/c'd the smallpox vaccine, there were ~ 6 deaths/year from vaccinia, and no deaths from smallpox. (in the US) That's when and why they decided to stop giving it.

It's not totally out of the realm of possibilities for some determined lunatic from acquiring some smallpox virus (assuming some major security break either here or in Russia) and causing some disastrous event. Smallpox is a horrendous disease.
