Skirts in the hospital...

Okay so its my religious preference to wear a skirt instead of pants. I am starting a new job soon at a hospital and I'm not too sure what to wear... My nursing school required us to wear skirts with white hose and shoes. Does anyone out here know what the general "policy" is on skirts/hose? Are the hose necessary? help would be appreciated. :)

at the facility where i work our uniform policy it's liberal, only one rule we must wear professional attire, if we don't care to wear the 5 scrubs given to us free when you become an employee. having said that, there are two rn's that still wear their classic white dress with nursing cap, they been with the facility for over 20yrs. they are known for this choice among their peers and pt.'s...:cool:
and i'll bet those 2 nurses stop people in their tracks when they're spotted. i know i'd be surprised.:nurse:

We have one that wears it year round. This year for nurses week, several wore it for the week. We all got compliments about being "in uniform" and "how nice it is to know who the nurse is". And would you believe it, the patients were not so rude.

And no I didn't go home filthy every shift. And there were nos shocks to the patients when I climbed onto a bed. I know how long a skirt has to be to be able to keep the goods covered.

At one place I worked, we were told we could wear shorts in the summer but they had to be knee length and we had to wear white stockings. We had no air conditioning. One of the male nurses wore shorts all year. I told the director if she made ME wear stockings I had better see stockings on the male nurses as well. The next day, the policy was changed to allow shorts...no stockings needed.

Our hospital has a uniform but it is not compulsory. I wear it in winter but when it cracks 40C in January I wear knee length shorts and my steel toe boots. Our wards' air con is amazing on one side pretty shoddy on the other and I never seem to be down the good side on hot days.

the deal was that there were more infections when all females wore skirts, this being a result of shed organisms from the perineal area. it was noticed that this decreased when pantyhose came in, since they contain the shed cells, hairs, etc. better than panties and garter belts. fewer yet with scrub pants. doncha love evidence-based practice?

Though all nice girls back then didn't jiggle (wore girdles). *LOL*

Would love to have seen the faces of some old school nurses when told not only they had to cover up but why.

does this mean that if an or or maternity nurse wanted to wear a scrub dress there will be a "girdle check"? also where do thongs fit into all this? most young girls one knows today (and we're talking about high school aged as well) consider anything more big girl panties.

yep. it's old news. so long as she meant panty hose, that is. of course when i try to remember how long ago it was that all anyone actually wore was stockings with garters.... even an ancient instructor is probably not as old as that.

Panty hose were not around when I was in junior high. We had garter belts with stockings. OKAY so MY dad didn't allow us to wear them, but.....

oh i don't know.

high and low end lingerie shops in my area (nyc) as well as those one has seen in places such as london, paris, berlin, and elsewhere have a decent stock of nylons and suspender belts not to mention corsets,merry widows, waspies and such all with garters attached. then there is the stock both vintage and new that seems to fly off sites such as ebay. unless the numbers of those on the game have dramatically increased it all can't be for "professional" purposes.

though the average age of males alive today and above puberty when such things were standard female "gear", am here to tell you there is still no faster way to get a man's attention regardless if he's 18 or 80. *i* of course do not know this from personal experience, just am sayin... :smokin:
