I am a fifty-year-old grandmother who is going back to school after quitting 34 years ago, I start A&P in June, and hope to be amitted to the ADN program in August.
I talked to the head of the nursing program a couple of weeks ago and she said I had a very good chance of getting in this year. I made a 26 on my ACT and worked for 4 years as a CNA.
I am very glad to have found this sight. It is very encourging to me to know there are other people like me who are waiting to find out if they will make it. If there is anyone out there who is starting nursing at my age please let me here from you.

Hi and welcome! I had several ladies and 1 gentleman in my classes who are in their late 40's to early 60's. They have all said studying is a little more challenging because their brains aren't as sharp as these young fresh faced kids, but they all passed with flying colors. :pumpiron: I hope you get that acceptance letter soon! :groupwelcome:

I understand how you feel. The fact is that there are a good many nurses at yours and my age in the business! And, although you may think you're going to be the odd one out in your class because of your age, I have news for you! There is a very high percentage of people in your age group going into nursing school. I had seen a recent article on this in one of the career/job papers and I thought I had saved it, but now I can't find it. I was surprised myself to see the figures on this, however. Our age group rules, Baby! So, get it on, Grandma and get going. You've got life experiences and wisdom going for you that the younguns can only hope to have by your age. By the way, my mother started nursing school when she was 48 and worked as a licensed LPN until she retired at 68. They had to practically drag her out of the hospital and make her retire.

It is very hard getting back in after a long time of being out of school. I have only been back in for one semester and I am taking Pharmacology this summer 1 semester. I have already started reading my chapters and I am really excited about the class beginning. I know it will be a very challenging semester, but this is only the beginning. We can do it, and I too am hoping to be in the program by next summer, but if not, I will keep trying till I do. There will be bumps in the road, and I am fully aware of it. I am determined thought to never get discouraged.

I, too, was worried about being too old. My great aunt is 90 years old and still kicking. So, I figure, I am only at the half way mark of my life. Time to move to the next chapter!!!
Good luck!!
