Simmons College Sept. 16' Cohort

Published

Hi there! I'm new to allnurses. I was wondering if anyone in the Student Nurse Practitioner forum is either currently enrolled at Simmons or is anyone out there waiting to get in? I applied last week for the September 2016 Cohort, and just received notice yesterday that my application has been sent in for faculty review. Anyone else sitting on pins and needles like me! LOL! Thanks for any feeback *Sorry if this topic has already been covered

They responded way faster than I was expecting!! It was just shy of one week I think. I'm from Arizona and I also have applied to a local school! It's half the price but a year longer and requires one night on campus a week. So many pros and cons!

I'm in the same situation. Local school much more affordable but program not nearly as superb as Simmons. Plus, I am an hour and a half from Boston so immersion program very doable.

My husband has a 100% commission job, and this month has been bad for commissions, so I'm not sure I can foot the $650 enrollment fee either. Uggghhh I just don't know what to do! I'm so honored to be admitted to Simmons, and obviously I wouldn't have applied if I didn't want to go there. But the local school here is still ranked highly and I know people who have gone there and enjoyed it. But I have two really young kids and the school isn't in the best part of town. It would just be difficult, but I know I'd still be prepared and in less (or no) debt. I just have to decide :(

I'm interested in applying to Simmons for the Sept or Nov 16 cohorts. Are you all working fulltime? Are you applying to the fulltime or part time option? I am curious how overwhelming the part time option will be while working.

Oh and I have looked at HRSA! I will probably apply but I know its pretty competitive and I'm not sure I'd be able to move to work in one of their approved places if necessary. My husband's job is pretty difficult to move.

Do some research before you sign on the line on the HRSA program.

I will be working full time (3 12a) until clinicals start. I am doing the program part time, which they told me is the only option for MA students. From what I hear from students already in the program, full time work with the part time program is very doable with good time management up until clinicals, but most people decrease their hours for the last 3 terms.

If it looks like I can't do the move part, should I avoid applying at all? I looked and in my area the only open job site right now is 3 hours away at a prison. My husband say no way Jose. But, there are about 14 approved sites in my area that don't currently have openings. I was thinking they may have openings by the time I'm done, but I don't know. I really feel its probably better for me to not sign up because I don't know about the move, but at the same time it would be nice to have free school...Do you know any specifics about the program? Maybe I should start a new thread about it.

There are a few threads about it with good info... from what I have read, if you cannot secure a job in your area, you have to take a position in one of their approved locations elsewhere. If you don't, there are huge financial consequences, including having to pay back the entire loan amount within 3 years with the highest interest rate. I just found some info online, go to page 19 of this and it talks about breach of contract.

Much better option, IMHO, is the PSLF program on federal loans.

I actually did that to get my Perkins Loan forgiven for my undergrad, but Perkins loans only require 5 years of work :) I HATE loans, but I also am passionate about being a FNP, so I need to make it work out. I think when it comes down to it, it might be a better choice for me to decline Simmons and attend the local school that is $30K and allows me to pay cash per class as we go. No debt, and FNP in the end...or maybe I'll just go win the lottery. I have to say, once I was accepted I joined the FB group for admitted students and I've been seeing a few things that are making me less enthusiastic about Simmons anyway. Or maybe I'm just finding things because I think it might be a better idea that I'm less enthusiastic about Simmons :)

Hi Staceym I applied for that cohort last Monday, still waiting...but it's only been 8 business days. They told me it would take about 1-2 weeks. I'm planning to do Full time while working part-time. Let me know about your acceptance in the Sept cohort if you apply. The waiting is driving me nuts! Lol sleepless in NC :nailbiting:

It's a big financial investment but it's also a huge investment of your time and life so don't focus on just the money but on the whole future and your whole investment.
