Sierra College Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello there,

Starting a thread for Sierra College's Fall 2017 ADN program applicants. Just thought we could use this to keep in touch for updates. Anyone else applying?? How many times have you applied for Sierra and/or other programs?? This will be my first time applying for any nursing program. Good luck to everyone!

Hey everyone! I was wondering does anyone know if the acceptance letter comes to the email you provide for them or your Sierra email?
i would assume the email we provided. A lot of applicants aren't students at Sierra (myself included), and aren't required to apply to the school before we apply to the nursing program.

Thanks Tod for your reply! I'm anxiously waiting. This is my 4th time applying. I have an 80 on my TEAS and my English GPA is 4.0 and my Bios are a 3.2, one repeat. No luck 😩

You're welcome! And an 80 on the teas is very good. I personally scored 76.7, but I have a 4.0 in my sciences. Unfortunately, still not good enough for the luck of the draw with the lottery all CCs do. Also, if you don't mind me asking, did you meet the 84% requirement for the chancellors report?

Curious how many people made the 84% on the Chancellors Report??

Hopefully all, as it's a requirement in order to be accepted into the program.

Thats what I assumed, but with ARC/SCC, the top 1/3 of those applicants is usually less that 200 people and after doing some of the math for it, the Chancellor's is more competitive. If they have 300-500 applications, I don't see how that many people would qualify or how Sierra would have more applicants that ARC/SCC in this area.

Because Sierra is more of a pure lottery, and not based on a point system similar to ARC, SCC, or Yuba, a chunk of their applicants probably do NOT qualify, but are still allowed to apply. With schools like ARC, they review your app to see if you qualify, before moving on to selection.

So it's hard to gauge exactly how many qualified applicants submit to Sierra's program verses other schools. Not to mention Sierra's somewhat archaic selection process, a lot of us that are qualified never have our applications even reviewed (ie; Sierra does it all by hand. They basically take a stack of apps, and once they find 30-40 qualified applicants they toss the rest).

Hi All!!

I've also applied to Sierra, it's my first time applying. I turned in my app in person on April 4th but I didn't sign in like another person in the thread mentioned, which has me worried now. The lady that took my app just date stamped the envelope my documents were in. There were a ton of those post office bins sitting around everywhere with manilla envelopes inside of them. I asked if they were all nursing applications and the lady said, "yes there's so many applications, I have nightmares about them!" There were so many apps I sort of felt discouraged but I know everyone has an equal chance of getting in at Sierra as long as you meet their requirements so I'm trying to find hope in that. Good luck to all of you. I hope we can all say we got in come May!!

Hmm, that's weird because my friend said they weren't given a number either. I walked into the nursing office and the lady handed me a sheet with the number 225 written on it. It asked me similer questions to that of ARC and Sac City's point values. For example, I was asked if I have an AS/AA degree, over 200 hours of volunteer service, a health care certificate, etc. I asked her what 225 meant, and she just said that's how many applicants have submitted paperwork.

Well best of luck to everyone. I personally think it's unfair how they selected the 40 applications regardless of them being qualified before seeing who's qualified and who's not... (according to their website, and what another member her said).

Thanks for an update. I don't feel so bad now that I know I wasn't the only one who wasn't issued a number. I'm just hoping it doesn't affect my application somehow.

I know what you mean about their selection process. It really is awful that we have to pay for transcripts that just get thrown away and not even looked at after they've selected their application pool. It would be nice if they kept things on file and just throw them out the next year if you don't reapply. Hopefully none of us have to worry about that cuz we all get in. (Fingers crossed)

Hey everyone! I talked to the nursing department today and apparently they're most likely going to change the application process next year by making it by merit, rather than lottery. I hope I get in this year since my grades arent the best...

At least they would finally have some sort of vetting process, which means they would have to review all applications.
