Should I take 5 nursing pre-reqs in one semester?

Hello all. I am a pre-nursing student in a community college right now and have less than a year until I'm finished here. I really want my BSN. I have a couple of nursing schools in mind, one of them being a very competitive school that requires you to finish ALL pre-reqs by the end of the Spring semester before the fall term in which you start the program (if anyone knows of it, it is Florida International university). So pretty much, I need to finish all my pre-reqs by the end of NEXT SEMESTER.

I am supposed to finish MOST of my pre-reqs next semester but the very last one was to be taken during the summer (human development). I can't apply to the nursing school if I have that one outstanding class. So my question is: should I stress myself out next semester and take 5 science classes that are all nursing school pre-reqs? Has anyone done this before??

My GPA is at 3.8 and would really like to either maintain or raise it. I am very studious and am very proud of grades/GPA. I have spoken to my advisor and told me that it would risk my GPA but that the decision is up to me. Should I go for it or no?

This nursing school has the cheapest BSN program that I know-- one of the main reasons I want to attend it. It's a competitive program because it is a very good one and is one of the main universities in the area in which I live. There are other BSN programs but they are from private universities (more expensive). I do have the option of the doing the ASN to BSN route at my community college BUT, I would rather obtain my bachelor's degree earlier than later. Financially I am able to just go straight to my BSN, but that does not mean I can afford to go to an expensive private university without a scholarship.

Sorry if this is a crazy mess of words and such, it's just stressing me out. Should I take those 5 classes next semester? Or should I just face the fact that I am not destined for this university? If there are any questions or confusions, ask me lol.

I think you can do it. You said yourself that you are very studious. Five isn't that uncommon during nursing school, so pre-req's should be better. Just focus all your energy into your studies and work towards your goal. Good luck!

My first instinct is NO ...but which five classes are they? And if you haven't taken the sciences yet, what does that 3.8 GPA consist of?

The 5 classes are Anatomy & Physiology 2 (lab and lecture), microbiology (lab and lecture), and the one I might add in to make it 5 is human growth and development.

I have taken some of the sciences already and am currently taking 3 pre-reqs this semester. The 3.8 gpa counts for the sciences/pre-requisites I have taken already and the general ed classes I have taken as well. Right now in this semester I'm taking human anatomy 1 (lab and lecture), psychology, and a critical thinking class.

I don't recommend taking A&P I and II at once, but that's not to say it can't be done.

I took A&P II and Micro (with two other classes) and got a 4.0 that semester, but I had to spend a good amount of time studying. I really can't imagine trying to do all three of those classes at once.

Does your preferred nursing school only have one application cycle per year? Can you not push your application a semester?

That's not four science classes, that's two science classes ....very manageable. I found Growth and Development to be a blow off class, for the most part. There was a ten page paper to write at the end, but it was more of a long essay than a research paper. If you think you can handle it, then you probably can.

The school only has admission once a year for the fall. So technically I'd have to wait a whole year if I don't get in. And I'm taking a&p 1 this semester (fall 2017)and I will be taking a&p 2 next semester (spring 2017)

In the spring I'm taking a&p2 (lab and lecture), microbiology (lab and lecture) and possibly the human growth class which would make it 5 classes in total.

So it's just A&P II and Micro? I see no issue with that. Usually lab and lecture comprise one class.

I took micro with chem 2. As others have said, human growth and development I found to be a gimme class. I consider what you need to take 3 classes- I don't consider lab a separate class. With those 3 classes I think you should be fine. When you said 5 prereqs I thought you meant something like stats, A&P 2, micro, nutrition, and human growth & development, which is something I would strongly recommend against doing.

That's just 3 classes, not 5. You'll be fine. I took A&P 2, micro, and two other classes and maintained a 4.0. That was with a micro professor from hell at that! Don't sweat it and take them.

Anatomy & Physiology was the only class I received a B grade for. It is a very tough class . What is this thing known as critical thinking? That is learned on the job.
