I was offered a RN job today at a LTC facility starting off at 19.25/hour. Does this seem a little low. The job does also offer full benifits. I live in eastern washington and the pay for nurses starting here in the hospital is 21-22 an hour. This is the only facility that has called me back and offered me a job right on the spot. I would like anyones opinion. Thanks. Also the job market around here is pretty crummy. we have 3 different nursing schools here so the pickins are slim plus it seems all of the hospitals want 1-2 years experience. Plus would this count as experience to work in a hospital. My dream is to be a L&D nurse but they want 1-2 years experience also. what to do what to do.

If you're concerned that this isnt close to L&D, I would say experience is experience. Even though its not close its still nursing experience employers want. About the pay, you have to decide whats important, is the salary sufficient for you to meet living costs? If its impossible to work with, then thats it. But if you its enough, thats great because the benefits are important! Some employers may pay more with less benefits...
Hope that helps, Im actually in the same boat, Im offered a home health position, but I dont care for that specialty. So I may take it because nothing else has come along But let us know what happens!!! Good luck!!!

If it works out financially for you, I would take it. It's experience, it's income, and no one says you have to stay there forever--you can always leave and find another job if you are not happy. Also, jobs are very hard to come by right now, especially if you don't have that year's experience. If you turn this down you might not see another offer for a while.
I don't know if it would count as hospital experience though: some employers may consider it; some may not. But IMO, any experience is better than no experience on an application form.
I agree that benifits are important and the DON told me they had great benifits. I guess experience is experience. I did some of my clinical at this facility. It was a great place to be so I think that I will take the job. between my pay and my husbands pay it will be more than enough to get us through. Thanks to you both for the insite!!!!!

I would agree, and say take the job.
I gave up on trying to work in a hospital about 2 months ago. I am being hired at a skilled nursing home, but my dream job is maternity. L&D, mother/baby, NICU, any of it!
My thoughts was, 1) it's a paying job, 2) it's experience, and 3) you never know what skills and experiences you may have that will transfer well to L&D. I have to get IV certified. In the hospitals I did clinicals at, most nurses on the floors did not do IVs, but that's a skill you NEED in L&D.
Good luck and congrats on the job!

Definitely take the job- which it sounds like you've already decided to do, but I had to chime in
The market is rough in my area too.
I just went in today and took my drug test. So when that comes back and my background check clears they will set me up for orientation. woo hoo!!

This may be a dumb question, but when they offered the job to you, did you tell them you need time to think about it, or did they just assume you needed to think about it. I always wondered we are all applying for some many jobs at once so what happens if you interview for 2 jobs, got called and offered another. Do you say u need time to think? Im confused sorry!
Yes I asked for a few days to think it over. When I went for my interview they didn't even interview me they just offered me the job. After thinking for a day I called them back and told them that I would accept the offer and they had me do the background check and drug test. I think what put me off was the pay was 19.25 and hour and the hopitals offer 23.63 an hour to start but when I weighed the pros and cons for example the hopitals were only offering part time jobs(24 hours/week) where as the LTC facility was offering fulltime. So when I did the math I found that I was actually going to make more at the LTC facility than at a hospital. Plus I love working with the elderly and have always seemed to have a nack for taking care of them. I am actually excited to be offered an opprotunity to work in this field. I have orientation tomorrow at 10 am and can't wait to finally start my nursing career!!!!

My teacher just today told us to get any job and do it for at least 6 months (get through it) and then after go shopping around for a position that is something more that you would like. EXPERIENCE is #1.
