Should I relocate to Texas from California?

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi All,

I recently passed my boards in July and have had no luck finding a job. I got a call back from South Texas Health System at the McAllen Medical Center but I was wondering if that is a good area to relocate. Should I just wait it out to see if I can get into a new grad program here in California or should I relocate and move to Texas? Also are there any other hospitals that might be opening up their new grad program anytime soon? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :)

Which hospitals in Houston if you don't mind me asking?

For you new grad folks-

Right now St. Lukes and Memorial Hermann are interviewing new grads for internships.

Memorial Hermann has mixed reviews but I've always heard that St. Luke's is a great place to work from people I know who have worked there.

I worked agency at St. Joe's and they are always hiring. They have new grad internships as well.

If you new grads are having problems getting a job, Houston is where you need to be right now.

Again----for you non-Texans-------Stay far away from the Rio Grande Valley hospitals.

i'm glad memorial herman is accepting licensed nurses into their internship program..

There are ALOT of May new grads in Houston who still haven't found a job yet. Myself included . Things are different than a year ago... if someone has inside information please share. :heartbeat

Texas is flooded with New Grad Nursing Jobs. I know San Antonio has many to chose from because that is where I went to nursing school and my graduating class had no problems getting a job of their choice. I actually graduated from nursing school in Texas and moved to California (bc I got married and that is where my hubby is stationed). Know I am looking for RN job with no luck. Good luck to you. I am sure you will find a job that you like.

From their very own websites:

And this info is current, not from a year ago so I'm not sure what you meant by that comment.

Now granted, Hermann had a 9/11 cutoff date but this thread started before that date.

They have continued accepting applications after the date in years past but not sure if they will do the same this year.

my friend is a nurse in california and she told me there is a hiring freeze for graduates that were not previously employed at the hospital. Her hospital is only hiring new grads that have had previous employment at the hospital she is working at. :twocents:

Specializes in ICU, Surgical Services.

Hi, I'm a new grad in Houston, and the job market for us is tight. Yes there are openings posted but there are way more grads than positions (naturally). I spoke with an HR rep at Ben Taub's Nursing Admin office about their internship, and he told me there are 35 positions to be filled (I'm not sure if this is for both LBJ and BT); he also said enrty was competitive since there are many qualified grads. I'd imagine the other hospitals hire about as many new grads.

What I'm getting at is this: Yes there are openings (for next year) but there are tens of applicants per available position. TMC is not hurting for new grads, there's a nursing school in every direction. It's not impossible to get a job in Houston but it's no cake walk either. If anybody's trying to relocate don't be fooled into thinking there's no competition-- there is and it's stiff (just think how many more new grads will join the market after December graduation).

My advice for the OP is go ahead and apply (so you're in the game) and may the best GN win :D

When you get a job here then relocate.

Good luck to all my fellow new grads. WE WILL SURVIVE THIS AND BE BETTER IN THE END.:heartbeat
