Some people have been telling me that if I am not willing to be in all the parts of nursing then I shouldn't be a nurse? Do you think that is true? I don't want to do surgical or emergency room but does that mean I shouldn't be a nurse at all?

You don't actually have to work in ER or post op/OR but you can't control what you do in nursing school can you explain more?
Nursing is a very flexible profession.:redbeathe

You may have to do some rotations through those places in nursing school, and it will very likely be a great learning experience. I have absolutely zero interest in cardiac but did a rotation in telemetry and ICU stepdown and learned a lot.
Just because you don't particularly have that interest doesn't mean that you can't be a nurse. There are plenty of places that don't involve ER or surgery. Having said that, once you get into nursing school you might find that you like those places. :) Good luck.

I found out in nursing school that areas of nursing I never thought I'd ever be interested in...I actually kinda liked.
If you aren't a nurse yet, don't eliminate potential job opportunities until you experience them. :) You never know what you may end up loving.

There is absolutely nothing wrong for having a preference. That is the wonderful part about being a nurse. As for me I love Psych nursing and plan on sticking with that. The important thing is just being the best you can be at whatever area you decide to persue. And to answer your question "YES" you absolutely should be a nurse!!:wink2::redbeathe
I'm not saying that I hate either parts or would never do them, especially if I have to during nursing school, they just wouldn't be my first job interest, at least not right now.
Thanks guys.
The beauty of nursing is that you can find your niche and jump right into it in most cases. If you get burned out, recreate yourself someplace new!

I have been a nurse 35 years and there are more areas of nursing I have not worked in that those I have. So, I guess it is probably OK.
I have no desire to work in OB, Peds, oncology, psych, cath lab, surgery, med- surg, neuro, etc. BUT I get just enough of everything in the ER.
Once you have your RN, the possibilities are endless.

I think that whoever told you that is wrong. Yes, you should keep an open mind and you will have to do a little bit of everything in nursing school, but it's up to you where you work for the rest of your life! I know a nurse who *only* wants to do surgery and has done it her entire career (15+ years!) and I know plenty of people who have tried everything depending on what works for their life at the moment. Don't knock it before you try it though.. I thought I would *love* psych but I actually really loved wound care, which I thought I couldn't handle! You never know till you are actually there.

I agree with this poster. I live in a very rural area and don't have much of a choice other than tiny hospitals or nursing homes. As a result, my specialty has always been geriatrics. I did a 6 month stint of Home Health/Hospice and loved it. I'd still be there but had some med problems with my bipolar disorder at the time and couldn't go out at night for my Hospice patients. I really enjoyed that job though, more so than my nursing home jobs. I'm going back for my BSN/MSN too so more possibilities will open up for me and I can maybe, just maybe, work at getting my dream jobs, LOL.

Amen! This is why I am here.
Right now I'm a new grad working on a med-surg floor. My goal is to learn priortization and time management.
I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up (I'm 40), but I do know that I want to be a nurse!
