My hospital seems to be cracking down on absenteeism. The second person this month in our dept was just fired. He has a wife with severe medical problems. He also calls in for bs reasons I suspect.
He was fired while his wife was hospitalized and he called in. That seems like kicking a man while he is down to me.
I'm wondering, is nursing only for people with no health problems in themselves or their immediate families?
My agency just eliminated PTO........AND DELETED the PTO hours already earned! I had 67 hours earned PTO because I actually postponed a planned vacation to help them out during holidays and management changes. Oh, they were desperate, and I was so reliable. Now my time earned has gone ppfffffttttt! Nice.
That is so unfair. If they want to get rid of it fine. But allow those that have earned time left be able to use it and just have it that there will be no more time earned from that point on.

Yup, that was my take on it too, but when I made my case...........crickets.
Twenty-five years seniority and a stellar record don't mean nuthin' .

Check your state labor laws while sick hours can be taken away/ forfeited earned PTO/vacation time often cannot. Sick hours are considered a use or lose benefit (like health insurance you have it "just in case")
We have progressive discipline and tracking for all employees including management at my organization.
For people who say they're unfit to work, there's a referral to OH and S. At the end of the day, when you accept a position, you've signed a contract to work a certain number of hours. The employer expects their employees to be present.
I'll advise my employees that if they are unable to work their hours after so many shifts are missed that they need to consider a lower FTE and/ or referrals to employee assistance programs. The last resort is termination.
I hope you got unemployment!
Nope! I went and filed for unemployment. I was on the books as hired as a part time employee. However I always worked full time hours. Since there was no specifics on how much is 'excessive' it was subjective and the employeer could consider 1 call out in 1 year exessive! Go figure.

Been there, done that; no recourse.
God will revisit the company owner with some-such equal tit-for-tat event, I have no doubt. What goes around comes around; I've seen it before with the previous owners. I don't have to do anything myself because whatever @$$-bite is coming for the owner is already in the pipeline, I feel sure.
In my state "sick hours" and "vacation hours" are treated differently. Earned vacation hours are "yours to keep" once you have earned them ... but "sick hours" are a benefit that an employer grants without obligation to pay for any unused time when the person leaves. That is how it has been in every job I have ever worked -- in multiple states.
My currently just switched to having them all considered PTO, with unused time paid out when the person leaves the organization. They used to let us cash some of it in for money a couple of times per year, but they don't do that anymore.

That's illegal in my state.
It usually isn't the current absence that got them to where they are on the chopping block. Most hospitals have policies on attendance and certain steps must be followed. Warnings usually come first. After 4 absences, our hospital gives the first verbal written warning. If another absence occurs within the same year a written notice is given. After another suspension x 3 days without pay is given and finally on the next offense within the fiscal year, a termination is given. If someone has to be out over 3 days with sick family member or self-sick, then they can take part of their 12 weeks of FMLA if they have been employed for at least a year.
