Sharing your survival tips--How do you prepare each semester?

Published

In the past, when I know I'm going to be faced with a tougher than normal challenge, I try to prepare and make life a little more convenient ahead of time.

Now that I have been officially accepted into the nursing program, I will be doing a lot preparation in between each semester.

Here are a few things I do before I start my tough semesters:

-Make meals and snacks that require very little to no prep time and freeze them.

-Clean like it's spring

-Give myself a pedicure with a new polish color.

-Get my hair done.

-Wear my kids out by spending tons of time with them.

-Me and my husband go out on a date.

What do you do to make life a little more convenient while in nursing school?

I start Sept 13th, orientation is next week.

After orientation I need to pick up all my school supplies.

I'm spending as much time as I can with the BF now. He knows things are going to change big time once school starts. He's taking me away for a few days before the semester starts, and we are going away for a few days once it's over (his usual trip to one of his best friends for Christmas but extend it a day or two).

Read as much as I can not for school, I'm a total bookworm.

Getting into a gym routine so it's easy for me to keep up when school starts.

I've always been crafty, and that will help a lot with keeping my sanity while In school :p I knit, crochet, sew, quilt, and felt! Knitting has always been such a great stress reliever for me (unless you get a real wacked pattern that hasn't been tested and you find errors...) and it gives me something to do on the bus to school!

I would recommend that in your time off, it really helps to review skills you're likely to use when you start. Just practice and recite the steps of simple things like IV starts, foley placements, assessments, etc. Pretty basic skills that really become a lot easier when you start doing them for real.

And really review the most common meds. Not that many, really, but if you're gonna be med-surg, then just get real familiar with your BP drugs, insulins (and their onsets, implications, etc.), pain meds, and anti-biotics. Those four classes account for 90% of the actual workload. Well, I take that back...documenting accounts for 90% of the workload, lol.

If I can't knit in at least one class I'll cry. I retain SO MUCH MORE information if I have something to do with my hands. I made several hats in my CNA class.

These are all excellent ideas! Thank you so much for sharing. I have applied to an Accelerated BSN program and I won't know till the last minute if I've been accepted. So I thought now would be the perfect time to prepare. The real trick will be to get it all done : )

I'm off to get started!

I just printed out a month by month calendar for this semester. I'll use it to write down the dates of every exam, assignment due dates and whatever else.

I have already mapped out my class schedule, my work schedule, my assignments, my study schedule, and my exercise schedule until semester end.

I cleaned up my insanely messy desk from where apparently an explosion happened sometime around finals last semester.

I filed everything from last semester so I can review it easily on the next break.

I have gotten my books organized, my first reading assignment done, and about a month's worth of meals frozen.

I went to see and then say goodbye to my family and friends. I spent probably 30 hours watching TV and movies that I missed the last few months.

My husband and I spent a LOT of quality time together ;), I tried to cram in all the time I could with my pets, and I got my laptop and car serviced.

I got so frazzled last semester (which was my first) that I nearly went bonkers, and by golly, it's NOT going to happen again!!!!
