Share you Deaconess Experiences!

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I've started looking into the Deaconess route for the LPN to RN program.

I'd appreciate it if anyone would share their experiences (good and bad) with Deaconess, even if you decided not to enroll... and why. What was the typical wait list like?

Thanks!

Hi Nadja9,

I find it very disturbing that things like this were allowed to develop for students at DCN. I'm not quite sure exactly what the issues were but if it were "clinical issues" I don't understand how come they did not accommadate the students at FPH.

There used to be a policy that if a student wanted to sit for the nclex pn, they had to exit out for a semster but I have not heard that you must remain in the program without semester break. Actually, it does say in the catalog that if you exit out for more than 1 semester you may have to reapply which leads me to believe that leaves of absence were acceptable. The policy regarding taking a LOA for the sake of taking the nclex may apply to future students, I am not really sure on that one.

BTW, nice gpa. :yelclap:

Hi!

Yes, they had that PN policy when I was there. And we didn't understand why we weren't offered FPH til the VERY end. Like I said before, a lot has changed since we were there. And for the sake of others, I am happy.

Thank you on the GPA. That was a crazy semester! Woo-hoo!

Mona,

Have you heard recently that the policy on taking a semester off for the NCLEX PN is no longer required. Last semester I signed a form as to whether or not I wanted to take the NCLEX PN and if I selected yes, I agreed to take a semester off. I had not heard that this changed. If so, I will graduate sooner than I thought...WOOHOO!

Also I know that at this point you can take a semester off and still return to the program where you left off as long as you give notice of your intentions. I know this because I have already requested to take the summer off this year...I do not want to do Semester III of the program over the short summer term, plus I have other gen eds I want to work on. There are a handful of my classmates that are doing the same.

Hey you guys,

Who owns Deaconess now? Is the school still owned by Tenet, or did that new company that bought Forest Park Hospital buy the school?

I hope the weather is better where you all are at. It is cold and gloomy here. C'mooooooooon Spring!!!!

Nadja9,

The hospital (Forest Park) was sold but the school (Deaconess) is still owned by Tenet.

Hi Cheri,

Last I heard on this confusing policy is that students who started when I did where exempt from that LOA requirement. However, I am not sure if they have changed it or not. I was a little peeved at DCN for not making it clear to the students. I did not find out that I did not have to take a LOA until I was at validations in MO. I spoke with the Dean last year about it. I am not sayng that taking a LOA is unneccesary, I just feel it is not necessary for it to be mandatory.

Hi Mona,

When I was there, we had to take a LOA if we wanted to sit for PN boards. But none of us knew that initially. We were told we could sit for boards for the PN once that part was completed, but no one told us when we began the program that we'd have to take a semester off. Sounds like they still need to make that really clear.

Well at the beginning of last semester I was sent the form explaining the LOA requirement. As far as I know it is still mandatory for my class and forward, but I have just sent a message to my student advisor to be sure. I will keep you posted.

I have to agree with you Mona, while I think it is good advise to take a semester off, I don't think it should be mandatory.

just reading all of this is so sickening. why r u all wasting ur time with programs like deaconess. when will u learn? i don't blame the hospitals for not wanting u at their facility for clinical. yes it is a risk and u would let a school like deaconess put u out there on ur own? that's terrible and not to mention giving the clinical responsibility of teaching u all to already over worked nurses. come on this is not fair. they r out for ur money ok, wise up they get u to do this crap and u dont like it u stuck with a fat student loan. what if u apply for a job and the recruiter asks where did u recieve ur nursing edu? and u say deaconess or excelsior whatever. then they ask was it online and u say yes. the recruiter then replies "im sorry i just dont feel comfortable with hiring an online nursing student, i've heard so many awful things concerning programs of this nature". hey word gets around so dont be surprised if that happens. for all the money they charge why wont the instructor do ur clinicals with u. i mean u r paying them u know ur not paying the poor over worked nurse and she/he probably not getting a dime extra for teaching u. this is sad this is soooo sad :chuckle

Dear Poe Me,

Was wondering why you seem to be so angry, did you have a bad experience at Deaconess? Are you a RN now or are you trying to get into a nursing school at this tme.

I personally think it is wonderful that there are many different options out there for those who are wanting to be come a RN. There is such a nursing shortage, as well as a larger shortage of really dedicated and committed RN's.

Acquiring knowledge and skills can be gain by many different ways, either through a tradtional or non-tradtional school. We all learn by different methods( visual, oral, hands on,etc). although some nursing schools practice the teaching of the whole holistic individual they can't seem to related that to the students they are teaching. I appreicate that Deaconess realizes this, and are trying to offer the oprotunity to those that really want to be a nurse. We need more nurses with a heart and the desire.

Do you feel this way about all online nursing schools ( EC, Phonix, etc) or just Deaconess?
