i left DCN for my own reasons it wasn't because i flunked out. i was like so many others was unhappy with the program period. just everything from the way we took our exams which was totally done online then the skills thing which was optional then the clinical issue. i was so pissed when i found out that our instructor will not be with us for clinical. the whole way this is set up is a joke and not to mention very expensive. more nursing programs r flexible and esp jewish. when i first started i only had lecture 2 days a wk for 3 hrs. that wasn't bad. i was still able to work and have time for studying. don't get me wrong i am all for distance learning. i've taken 3 telecourses and i'm glad i did. but for starting out in nursing i'm totally against it. now the bsn online is wonderful so i've heard ppl say and i'm thinking of going that route when i finish my asn at barnes jewish. by the way do u attend barnes jewish? if not what nursing school do u go to?

carly, i am aware of the nursing shortage. just because its a shortage doesn't mean it gives a school like deaconess to start these types of programs where students arent getting the right education and clinical experience. you all just don't get it. i'm graduating this year from my nursing program and its not online thank GOD. and just fyi phonix university online along with other schools that have these fly by night programs are under investigation. this was show on tv last week i believe it was dateline or 60 min. they are by the federal gov and the dep of education. i was so shocked to see all of these schools on there those that i even thougt was good such as phonix univ online. hummmmmm i wonder would deaconess make the list next time? probably so :rotfl:

just reading all of this is so sickening. why r u all wasting ur time with programs like deaconess. when will u learn? i don't blame the hospitals for not wanting u at their facility for clinical. yes it is a risk and u would let a school like deaconess put u out there on ur own? that's terrible and not to mention giving the clinical responsibility of teaching u all to already over worked nurses. come on this is not fair. they r out for ur money ok, wise up they get u to do this crap and u dont like it u stuck with a fat student loan. what if u apply for a job and the recruiter asks where did u recieve ur nursing edu? and u say deaconess or excelsior whatever. then they ask was it online and u say yes. the recruiter then replies "im sorry i just dont feel comfortable with hiring an online nursing student, i've heard so many awful things concerning programs of this nature". hey word gets around so dont be surprised if that happens. for all the money they charge why wont the instructor do ur clinicals with u. i mean u r paying them u know ur not paying the poor over worked nurse and she/he probably not getting a dime extra for teaching u. this is sad this is soooo sad :chuckle

GFY MistyKat10, my neice goes to flo valley's nursing program and she loves it. If u can get your nursing books early and start your reading that really helps. Also get as many of your gen ed's outta the way also. But I'm sure you'll recieve a great nursing education there they model there program from Barnes college of nursing and Jewish. So you should have no problem. The best of luck to you and congratulations.

Hello everyone its been a looooooong time since I've been to the site. Im still in nursing school and its really taking alot of my time as I'm sure u all are aware of. But anyways I'm still against the online LPN-RN program. As I have said many times and will continue to say these type of programs should be of concern to the community. I'm sorry if i offended anyone with my comments regarding these types of programs, and I will stand behind them. A lot of you have said in some of your posts that you dont have the time to go on campus for your nursing education because of work and family. I understand that totally and I know its hard going to nursing school when you have a family and work. I work and i have 2 children. I only go to school 3 days a week for this semester. We have clinical rotation 7 days a week at the nursing school i attend. This makes it easy for those who have family to get their clinical time in. One girl I know does her clinicals on Sat & Sun. I have a lecture class thats in the evening. Nursing schools now are soooo flexible just look into it. They've opened up another clinical and lecture section at my school, and i'm so glad they did. You dont have to go to school 5 days a week not anymore its changed so much. I just wanna see all of us succeed in nursing. My concern is for the patients as well as you all. Just look into it before you decide to go online. I'm all for distance learning even with the BSN online. But not this its too dangerous you will not be prepared as well as you should be. Look at Deaconess College pass rate for 2004 for the online its horrible and only 3 people took the test. :)

This is so unacceptable and not to mention how she is infecting herself with mrsa......which will be carried over to the next pt. I've seen something similar to this in a hopspital where i do clinicals.... so i'm not one bit surprised. I've witnessed nurses go into a pts room that is on contact isolation or resp isolation with no gown on or mask how stupid and careless.

I've seen this happened before. As a matter of fact there was a time that I got very upset over test scores. But nothing like yelling and cursing that's not the way to handle this. What I did was talked to my instructor about getting some extra help before it was to late. I had to reorganize my time and study a little harder to get my grade up. When you take your first exam and you don't do well get some help, its not worth it to yell at the teacher. If the teacher is difficult talk too other students and see what they are doing to keep up in the class.

Oh my God, I'm really surprised that some of you think that I'm against D/L and I'm not really. As I have stated before I have nothing personally against Deaconess and any other D/L program. Deaconess is a good institution to recieve your nursing education and its been that way for many years. That's why I can't understand why they created the ASN web-based program when they had success over the years with their diploma and BSN programs. When I checked the NLN web site DCN ASN is accredited, not the web base part. I've only have legetimate concerns on how we recieve our nursing edu. like so many others. When I first started DCN web-based, there were so many people telling me that I was crazy and you can't teach yourself to be a nurse. It was very hurtful to hear those kind of comments,because I wanted to be a nurse so bad and this was the easiest way to do it. Through out the course I felt like I was not being challenge, so to speak. I didn't like the way the material was being presented to me. So I made my decision to leave DCN for a traditional nursing edu. I DID NOT FLUNK OUT like some of you would like to believe. I'm very sorry if I did offend anyone, but I will stand by my comments and concerns that I have posted. I just want all of us to be competent and safe caregivers that's all. :)

To make this very clear toooo you, at DCN you take the test on your computer at home no videotaping,cameras,checking id's none of that just you.

Thank's lizz for poiting this out I never thought about hackers and there are some that are out there. My point is when you are at home and there is no teacher no other students, when it comes to taking those online exams there will be some who will look in there books at their notes and any other reference to get the answer. There are a lot of abbreviations on the exams if they don't know one they won't guess and put the wrong answer they will look it up. Who's gonna risk failing a test if they don't have too. If your in a classroom the chances of someone cheating is small and yes there are some that have done this only to recieve an F for the course. Many teachers watch you like a hawk so you will take your studying very seriously. I'm not against an RN completing their BSN/MSN thru the web, this is about web based LPN-ASN. Maybe there should be some changes like having the students come to the campus or a satelite campus to take the exams like they do in telecourses.

Don't sweat it Roland you'll do fine it just takes practice. When I went thru my CNA training I had an instructor that was strict on how we wash our hands, I had to do it over and over and over I told her we wash our hands everyday what's the big deal. Come to find out there's a special way you have to do this so you won't contaminate your sparkling clean hands. Then there's the bed making I do this everyday no big deal, Wrong! "you have to mitre the corners" she said. Took me a while to get it just like she wanted it with no wrinkles. Hang in there :)

GOOD POINT PURPLE MANIA! I've been having the same view not with continuing on for the BSN online, but with nursing schools offering LPN-RN or ASN web-based. There is probably a lot of plagarism and cheating that goes on in these type of programs and this should be a cause of great concern to the health community. School's and employers should care about how we recieve our nursing education. I know some RN's who got their BSN thru the web and loved it, I'll probably do the same thing after I get my ADN. Don't hate me just my opinion :)
