SFSU

U.S.A. California

Hey everyone. With so many programs sending acceptance letters I am checking to see if anyone has heard from SFSU?

oh wow 4 semesters is pretty fast as well. I think you might have more one on one time with the professors and at the clinical because SFSU seems to be pretty impacted. This is going to be a hard one best of luck and keep us updated :]

As a matter of fact, that is one of SM's selling points. The fact that their clinicals are 8-9 students per instructor.

Big decision ahead of me. I will keep you posted for sure. Thank you!

Hi Megs,

I have friends who graduated from Samuel Merritt and also SFSU and from what I've heard, they are both equally good. There are many pros and cons that you have to take in consideration. Tuition fees, class size, length time, etc.

Friend who graduated from Samuel Merritt is my sister-in-law and she recommended SM because of how small the classes are and how you are able to spend more time with them. However; she is also over 100k in debt. She now works for Stanford Hospital. She did the accelerated program and she was done in 18 months? Graduated Cum Laude

A friend who graduated from SFSU graduated as Suma Cum Laude. She is only down 30k in debt and is also working full-time. She finished in 2.5 years. She mentioned how the staff at SFSU are very helpful and will go out of their way to make sure that you are in the correct path.

They are both equally good. Either school you choose will give you the BEST nursing school experience that you are looking for! Good luck and hope you choose the right school for you.

Mel,

Thank you! Your response is just what I was looking for. A basic comparison of each school. The one common thing I've heard over the years is that SM is a smaller class size and great education, but not so far superior that it justifies the tuition, especially when I am fortunate to have a choice.

A nurse told me today that I also need to consider the cost of my tuition for my BSN and NP, should I choose to go on. Coming out 100k in debt might put a damper on me doing my NP soon after. SFSU has always been my first choice. I even said that last week when I knew I was 3rd on SM's list. I suppose I am a little nervous and want to make the right choice.

I have faith in myself that I will make the best out of any school. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. And congrats to you for getting in!

My name is already "SFSUMegs" so I better stick with it .. haha!

Glad I could help! If you do decide SFSU, when would you start?

Also, I saw that TEAS test is now a requirement for 2010/2011. Does this mean we have to take it, or it is for folks who are applying in 2010/2011 for 2011/2012? Anyone know?

SFSUMel,

I've decided on SFSU . . yay!! I talked to many people in the fields whose opinion I trust. I feel confident with my decision :-). I am starting the university this fall, and the nursing program in the spring. Every year they choose about 80 students. Half start in the fall, the other half in the spring.

The TEAS is now required for people applying here on out. As far as I know it does not apply to those of us who have already been accepted. It's just part of their new criteria. I have already taken it and it's not so bad .. .

Thank again!

that's great news Megs! I start in Fall so if you have any questions in what to expect, don't hesitate to ask!

Ey guys,

I attended the transfer orientation here in Southern California a couple of weeks ago. I just want to give a heads up on what happened. Before you go to orientation make sure their are no holds on your record (ie immunization, tuition, GE reqs) because it would be a pain in the ass to sign up for classes. Bring those documents with you just in case. They had representatives from housing, financial aid, and other departments if you had other questions.

The orientation was sort of a formality because the information they gave out is at the SFSU website. They explained the requirements to graduate (GE3, Hist/GOV). They also said that due to the budget cuts it would be harder to have a double major. However, the important part is after the orientation when they let you sign up for up to 8 credits in early registration. This allowed me to sign up for my GE 3 reqs since I don't start the program until Spring. I signed up for a couple of holistic health classes Eastern and western perspective which gives me 6 credits for this semester. I think its possible to get a minor in holistic health if you guys want to go that route. I will be able to sign up for classes again later on my priority registration time (August). So make sure you know what classes you want to sign up for during the orientation. There were a lot of classes filled up so have some backups.

Hope this helps you guys.

Congratulations! This is a topic that I've had major concerns about. I'm sure that you can sleep a little easier at night, knowing that you have some of the classes you wanted locked in for Fall.

Frankly, I'm really surprised that they offered orientations as early as a couple of weeks prior to the date you posted this. With orientation dates as early as this taking place, I'll be lucky to register for any of the classes that I had hoped for.... It looks like I really missed the boat on this one.

hi newRN1875! I know im like a year late with this. I recently got into SFSU BSN program for spring 2012. i am a current student at local community college. I have no real experience in a real 4 year university, but all i hear about SF state is that its really hard to get classes in order to graduate....Just wondering since you've done the program, once i am in the program i am guaranteed the classes i need to graduate right? i know i'll need classes to satisfy the university GE requirements and i assume i'll be subject to being on a wait list for those. any advice will help. thanks!

Hi Kreyes87,

Congratulations!! I am currently a level 1 nursing student at SFSU. I got the same letter as you, to start the program in the spring. Let me assure you that no, no one else can take nursing classes other than nursing students. It's a bad rumor going around! In fact, uless granted permission becuase of some special circumstance, no nursing student can register for a class that is not their current level. For example: I cannot sign up for maternity theory as a level 1 student. That's a level 3 class.

Everyone has a certain path to follow. Once registration begins, the nursing department opens it up to the people in that level. There is no need to worry!!

As far as the upper division for the university (segement 3) classes, you'll need to be flexible about what you take. All you need is three classes. They fill up fast because they are junior level classes that belong to other majors. That's where you are taking classes from another major since they are not set up like the nursing program. But, you can and will get classes. Just have a few choices in mind. I ended up with my third choice and loved every class I took. There are seriously thousands of cool classes to take! I went last fall and completed all three. I highly suggest doing that so they are out of the way and off your mind.

I know this is long winded . . .haha! I just want to clarify some of the facts and hopefully alleviate some anxiety associated with such an exciting time!!

Best of luck to you!!

:-)

I got their decision notice on the 26th of March, so you should be getting yours soon~
