SFSU
Hi Kreyes87, Congratulations!! I am currently a level 1 nursing student at SFSU. I got the same letter as you, to start the program in the spring. Let me assure you that no, no one else can take nursing classes other than nursing students. It's a bad rumor going around! In fact, uless granted permission becuase of some special circumstance, no nursing student can register for a class that is not their current level. For example: I cannot sign up for maternity theory as a level 1 student. That's a level 3 class. Everyone has a certain path to follow. Once registration begins, the nursing department opens it up to the people in that level. There is no need to worry!! As far as the upper division for the university (segement 3) classes, you'll need to be flexible about what you take. All you need is three classes. They fill up fast because they are junior level classes that belong to other majors. That's where you are taking classes from another major since they are not set up like the nursing program. But, you can and will get classes. Just have a few choices in mind. I ended up with my third choice and loved every class I took. There are seriously thousands of cool classes to take! I went last fall and completed all three. I highly suggest doing that so they are out of the way and off your mind. I know this is long winded . . .haha! I just want to clarify some of the facts and hopefully alleviate some anxiety associated with such an exciting time!! Best of luck to you!! :-)

krazievi3t6url i'm sorry to hear about your friend. to work so hard to get into the program and then have issues like that is just not fair . . . i suppose sfsu is just more strict about it. i also have two friends in the nursing program at sjsu, one in third semester and another about to finish and they've had no problems. good luck to you as well!

Thank for the information everyone. After doing more research I've decided SFSU is the place for me. So, I won't see you all this fall but good luck and congrats! cHaNkStA~ Yes, I got into the actual nursing program as well as the university. It can be a bit confusing :-) I read a few people on this thred saying that because of the budget cuts it will take longer than expected at a state school. For the most part that is a myth. SFSU is a 5 semester nursing program and SJSU is a 6 semester nursing program. According the the nursing department that is the time they feel it takes to really learn and grasp the information. The only people that can register for any nursing class are the people in that major! No one else can go and sign up for a nursing class if they are not technically in that major. They are very strict about it. The only way the budget cuts could potentially be an issue are with the upper division GE units. There are only a couple and you have 5 semesters to do them plus summers. There are so many interesting ones to choose from that it shouldn't be a big deal. :) Thanks again and good luck!

SFSUMel, I've decided on SFSU . . yay!! I talked to many people in the fields whose opinion I trust. I feel confident with my decision :-). I am starting the university this fall, and the nursing program in the spring. Every year they choose about 80 students. Half start in the fall, the other half in the spring. The TEAS is now required for people applying here on out. As far as I know it does not apply to those of us who have already been accepted. It's just part of their new criteria. I have already taken it and it's not so bad .. . Thank again!

Mel, Thank you! Your response is just what I was looking for. A basic comparison of each school. The one common thing I've heard over the years is that SM is a smaller class size and great education, but not so far superior that it justifies the tuition, especially when I am fortunate to have a choice. A nurse told me today that I also need to consider the cost of my tuition for my BSN and NP, should I choose to go on. Coming out 100k in debt might put a damper on me doing my NP soon after. SFSU has always been my first choice. I even said that last week when I knew I was 3rd on SM's list. I suppose I am a little nervous and want to make the right choice. I have faith in myself that I will make the best out of any school. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. And congrats to you for getting in! My name is already "SFSUMegs" so I better stick with it .. haha!

As a matter of fact, that is one of SM's selling points. The fact that their clinicals are 8-9 students per instructor. Big decision ahead of me. I will keep you posted for sure. Thank you!

Samuel Merrit I would start this fall and it's four semesters. SFSU I am a spring 2011 start so I would be done an entire year later. All I care about is the program and coming out a great nurse. I feel SO very fortunate to have this decision, but that doesn't make it any easier.

Hi everyone!! Congrats SFSUMel! I am in need of some advice. I was accepted to SFSU's nursing program and was set on attending it. That all changed this morning when I learned I was accepted into Samuel Merritt's BSN program for this fall. There are numerous pros and cons, but I just want to choose the BEST school that will make me the BEST nurse. Does anyone have any advice? I have about a week to decide. .. . Thank you!

Hi everyone! I basically have the same question. I was accepted into SFSU and was set on going there. This morning I found out that I got into the BSN program at Samuel Merritt. Now I cannot decide where to go. I will take loans if need be . . . all I care about is which school will make me the best nurse! Any more advice?

Elacer08~ I was thinking 1200-1400 is good for a private one bedroom apartment. I'm sorry but I don't know anything about dorms. I'm sure you can call school housing and they can help you. Puppyadobo~ I also wanted an earlier orientation but 7/10 was the first one available for me to be able to bring someone with me. I haven't narrowed down my seg3 classes. I did print the very long list and plan to look at it once finals are done. I think I'll pick a few choices so I'm not let down. I know it's tough to get these classes because of all the budget cuts. I don't want to get my heart set on any in particular. It'll be fun for you to live right near campus!!

That's great! It sounds like a good price based off of what I've seen for the area. I'll be moving from San Jose. That will be easy for you to get to know the area. I love Boston Terriers . . so cute!! I'm attending the orientation on July 10th and will sign up for seg 3 classes then. The list is overwhelming and it looks like there are so many fun classes. I'm looking forward to a "fun" semster. I'm finishing up organic/bio chem right now. It turns out I don't even need it for SFSU, but oh well, it's been a fun class.

Puppyadobo~ congrats on getting into the program! We'll be classmates . . yay! I have never heard of those apartments. I did look at Park Merced Apartments that are right across the street on Hollaway. I wasn't impressed with them at all. Way too much money and I felt like I was in a jail. My boyfriend and I are looking in Sunset area. Most likely near GG park and UCSF. I'll just take public transportation to school.

elacer08-- I know, it's all a bit confusing and overwhelming to be going to a new school. It is simply 5 semesters long and no nursing classes are done in the summer session or winter (not sure if there is a winter session). So, if you do start the nursing program this fall, it means you'll be done at the end of the fall semester 2012. Assuming you finish your upper division GE work during that time. I will be done spring of 2013. This is what I was told by Jennifer at the nursing department. You should verify it with a counselor as well. :-)
