SFSU 2011 applicants

Published

Application period is about to start for everybody. I wanted to open a new thread for those who are applying to SFSU, to share information, give support to others and to see how fierce the competition is going to be this academic year.

Hi Solidus,

The whole team is rooting for you--all our hoping has got to add some good karma your way I'm sure. You are so close and please do keep us posted because you already have all of us on the edge of our seats crossing our fingers for you ;)

Speaking of health requirements, people on the waitlist who are pretty high up--it wouldn't hurt to get some of the work started so if you get in, you don't have to feel like you have to sprint to get all this done. If you have insurance that would pay for the lab costs this is more reason to do the lab work sooner than later. You'll need titers for MMR, Varicella, and Hep B, a physical, proof of DTap within the last 10 yrs, and a 2-step TB skin test. If the TB test comes up positive, you will need to get a chest X-ray showing you do not have active TB. If you have active TB, you will have to undergo treatment until you show that your TB has become inactive before any nursing program will let you do clinicals. These policies are pretty universal amongst all the nursing programs I've looked at so the lab work you do can be used at other programs as well.

I thought I was ahead of the schedule until I found out that I somehow had lost immunity to mumps and rubella over the years and had to undergo re-vaccination. The MMR requires two shots with the 2nd shot administered 30 days after the first. Six weeks after this, I'll have to go back for a follow-up titer to show final immunity. So I started my lab work really early and am finding out that it was a good thing I did so because my final-final results will be delayed because of my immunity status.

Also, it can't hurt to get your CPR certification. These do expire however after several years.

Good luck everyone!

Thank you Candicen83 and angelxeternity

I've been telling myself what you told me and been thinking positive, and the good karma too! Just keep imagining that I can be that special nurse to inspire people, to give back to my community and this world as they have given back to me.

Thanks for the heads up also you two! I have a CPR certification and I will try to get started with my immunization records to see if they're up-to-date as well as to do a general physical check-up.

Thanks again for all the support. I could really use it, especially at times like this!

HEY EVERYONE!!!!

I GOT ACCEPTED TODAY!!!!!!!!! FALL 2011!!!!!!!

:anpom::anpom::anpom::anpom::anpom:

FINALLY OUT OF THE WAIT LIST!!!!

I would like to say a few words, to those on the wait list especially. Never lose hope and dreams will come true. Think positive and remain optimistic about your dreams because they really do become a reality in the end. I was not sure how I made it in. Was it good karma? Was it friendship support? Could it have been the good deeds repaid? Or possibly the effort and sacrifice of hard work that I did?

To those on the wait list and still hoping, especially to you EME.LEW, I'm pulling for you big time! Never lose hope and keep in faith that you'll be there!

I woke up this day to see my emails and I got an acceptance email from SFSU's nursing program! I screamed waking up my mom to give my twin and mom a hug. Now I can't wait to see and be united with my friends and support them for this program. It'll be one big ride, but with team work and perseverance, we'll pull through. I'm very happy that things worked out the way they did, because now I can see myself in those communities to help people out. And yes, I am VERY THANKFUL for all of you here in this site! Without your positive words and encouragement, I would probably have been on a different route.

I cannot thank you all enough: candicen83, angelxeternity, Reebles, EME.LEW, and everyone else who have shown support!

:redpinkhe Thank you :)

WOoooW!!! Thank you so much :) and big big bigtime congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You deserve it. You gotta get out and celebrate!

Hopefully I'll see you there sometime soon :) :)

EME.LEW,

Why don't you try sending another email to them again? I sent one on the weekend before I got accepted to see what my status was. Maybe they'll consider you?

And if not, you're already closer than ever, you've got an even bigger chance for Spring 2012!!

Reebles,

what books are required? I think I might have some. Are you going to be one of the people at orientation to present and talk?

Angelxeternity,

yes, I'd be glad to be study buddies!

Has anyone finished their health requirements? I'm stressing out since I got accepted way late and all is still due by Aug 10. How did the Hep B thing go for you all? did it take time?

I finished my health requirements. The hep B series I did a long time ago so I just had to get a blood titer to prove I have immunity. The same goes for MMR and Varicella. You should get started ASAP on the 2 step ppd because that can take up to 2 weeks to complete. How it works is you go in for ppd#1 get it read 48 hours later...then get ppd#2 (when you can get it depends on your doctor. I got mine on the same day that ppd#1 was read, but got ppd#2 on the opposite arm. I suggest you wait a few days to get ppd#2 because I had to get special approval from --- to clear my 2step after I explained to her that that is how my doctor ordered it) and get it read 48 hours later. Also, register and take CPR for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association ASAP! You need to have the card scanned by Aug 10th as well. It took me 3 weeks to get my card from the day I took the test.

As for books, I can email you the orientation packet that was sent to me that'll explain everything you need to know about the nursing program and how to prepare for it. I suggest reading the entire PDF to get acquainted. In the pdf there's a list of books that are in a packet that will be sold during orientation. It costs $608 for the set which contains most of the core books we need for our first semester classes, but not all. I opted to buy them off amazon and got them for $400. The only difference is that the bundle the school is selling includes electronic versions of some of the books. If you like having that handy then that might be the option for you. Personally I have a hard time reading/studying off the computer for long periods of time so I chose to purchase my books separately and saved some money by not needing the electronic access. The orientation packet also lists a bunch of supplies that you'll need in case you want to get a jump start.

Oh and there is already a homework assignment due the first day of class. The math book listed has a pre-test in it that you are REQUIRED to take. If you DO NOT get 100% then you MUST complete both Unit 1 and Unit 2 in the book. Don't worry its not too hard, just extremely tedious because its basic math. The only thing is that you can't use a calculator and have to solve everything out by hand. It has a lot of problem sets so I'd get started ASAP. I've already done chapters 1-3 out of 5 for Unit 1 which totaled about 250 problems so far. Sorry if I'm overloading you with info, I just want you to be up to date :)

Anyhoo, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Also you can PM me your email address if you want me to send you the orientation packet.;)

thanks angel, I'll send you a pm now

k =)

I hope I'm able to help.

Thanks so much Solidus! I actually did send an email.. I have moved down in the list quite a bit! Very excited.

I wonder if they let more attend in the spring when people from fall change minds/decide to leave mid semester?

Maybe b/c they have the funds to have more in the spring then? Not quite sure how it works.

Anyway, thanks for the advice!!! :)

Also thank you guys for the info about vaccinations and cpr... I have most of that but may need to check on other, it's always good to be prepared!

Good luck to everyone!
