SFSU 2011 applicants

Application period is about to start for everybody. I wanted to open a new thread for those who are applying to SFSU, to share information, give support to others and to see how fierce the competition is going to be this academic year.

thank you!!! I was expecting to not hear anything until Christmas time, so super stoked! I started out as number 23 on the waitlist at the very beginning. Last I checked, I was number 4. :)

lol, i ws 18 then moved to number 4.

that was my "number" haha! well congrats big time! I am in the program and LOVE IT! I suggest that you get a head start with immunizations and readings. The program itself if very rewarding. Once again, congrats and welcome! I hope to see you next semester!

whoo hoo! I know this is late, but I still wanted to say congrats! I stopped getting email prompts from the site for whatever reason and it fell off my radar for a while. I am so happy for you solidus bc you truly deserve it! Good luck and omg you got into Fall??? Even better and worth the wait right?

Heck yes! This semester is hectic, not going to lie, but I'm cruising my ship well through these rough seas. How's the Cañada cohort doing? There's only 21 of us (I'm the extra) this semester for the BSN. The other 60 will start next sem, and the fillers are GMSN people. I don't know why they did it this way. Also, I got into a new pilot program for my batch where all clinicals are to be held in the SF VA, except peds and maternity. It's to make us vulnerable to being hired there.

Indeed, this year/semester has truly been a blessing to me. I got accepted into the program and had I not known what I would be doing not if I didn't get in the program, I would NEVER have been a nurse. Moreover, I'm with my friends this sem and we are all helping each other out! I've even met some awesome people too! Other than that, things just get better and better. There are so much more wonderful things that I can say that happened too but I'm going to cap it now.

That's so nice to hear, Solidus. I personally think that folks who had to go through as much as you did appreciate the opportunity a great deal and tend to really seize all the program has to offer.

I am so happy it's you who made it in although I know all candidates were worthy and qualified. I just sense a dedication to improving humanity in you that I can really relate to. I wish more folks were going into this field with this also in mind. Of course, we all are doing this for the financial securities, but we're given such unique skills and it's really inspiring when dedicated doctors and nurses assist those in under privileged communities here and abroad.

I knew you would get in because the Universe needs people like you who are sensitive to others' suffering and want to do your part to help. I agree with you that when you follow your passion and do things for the right reason, the Universe will meet you half way with some very nice surprises. Hopefully, our paths will cross one of these days--who knows, maybe in some community project of the like? ;)

Current SF State BSN Nursing Students... Question about Living in SF vs East Bay.

I attended SF State in 2009 as a full time student, and commuted from the East Bay (Oakland). Most of the time it took me an hour and a half one way.

I had to get to BART, wait for BART

Take BART (40 min)

Then wait for the SFSU shuttle

Then walk to class.

And waiting for the shuttle to BART back home was often a very long line/wait.

It was hard, but I had pretty easy classes.

Now that I start the BSN program in Spring I want to know what you all think of your commuting experience. Do most of you live in SF or very close surrounding areas? I'm looking for a place for my husband and I but am finding it a bit difficult. We are willing to pay a little more because we will hopefully save money and time on commuting.

But I just figure, living in SF would be easier if I want to get tutoring, or meet classmates to study, or go home because I forgot something, or need a nap between classes, have an important test or have more time to study/sleep instead of commuting. Not to mention Clinicals that will be in SF. I wouldn't have to head out two hours earlier every time.

Do any of you live in the East bay still? I'd like to know what you all think on this subject.

Thanks!

commuting is going to change for me next week. I used to commute from Gilroy to SF last semester, and this sem, I commute now from SJ to SF. South Bay here. This is my last week driving and next week begins my bay area clipper card. I will take CalTrain from SJ to SF-embarcadero, then muni to SFSU. not a bad deal since I save gas money that way and by far is the cheapest solution that I've seen. Gas would cost me much more a month than clipper card, and I even use a hybrid! I also get unlimited rides on CalTrain for weekends, and VTA (Silicon Valley) is free for me and BART discounts, supposedly. But with the clipper card, I don't have to fight traffic AND I go green while I can still get to places just in time literally! I don't mind getting to school maybe 1-3 hours early because as a student nurse, I've heaps to study for AND I can also sleep on board or in-school-mini-naps.

I've classmates who commute from East Bay too, Alemeda, and they take BART-muni. They usually get to class on time, but if BART is late, then you're late, especially on clinicals. For me, I don't take CalTrain on clinical days. Instead, I drive just to get to the site earlier, but other than that, I commute via public transport.

Personally, I live about a 10 minute drive from school and I LOVE IT! Yes, rent is higher in the city, but you do save on the commuting costs so I think it all evens out relatively. Plus, like you said, I can head home between classes in case I need anything which makes life a lot more convenient. I also only wake up 1 hour before class starts and leave probably 30 minutes before so I can drive and find parking. If it is you and your husband moving I suggest trying to find a semi-affordable place within 5-10 miles of school or so. I think this will be more affordable since you both will save on commuting rather than compared to 1 person's savings. Keep in mind though the place you rent might end up being a studio or 1 bedroom apartment...but it's not too bad. My boyfriend and I share a studio =)

I just started this semester and have spent about $1000 on books and supplies that are required. We also have to pay for Kaplan testing for 5 semesters, but we haven't been told how much it costs yet....I'm guessing almost another $1000 knowing kaplan o_o. Taking out a loan is a personal question...gauge if you think you need it or if you can pay for it out of pocket.

Solidus,

I am SO glad you are enjoying your first semester.

As for the Kaplan question, I just switched from ATI to Kaplan, I am a Level 3 and it is going to cost us a little over 400 bucks, so I would guess for level 1 it will be around 700 or so.

I have met some of your level 1 students as they are doing their first clinical on the floor I work on at SF General as a public service aide-student nurse intern.

Wicked awesome dude!

Yes, my clinicals are at the VA until graduation (except peds and maternity), it's a new pilot program with the SF VA and SFSU this sem, and I wanted in sinceI've been with the VA for a while. So far, I think it's an amazing experience! Level 1 is definitely challenging, but I'm glad that I'm learning so much. Kaplan is great too. It helps me a lot. I'm just more happy that the semester is almost over half-way! I can't wait longer to progress!

Reanna, this so far has been the BEST part of my life at the moment, being in nursing school at one of the world's most dynamic cities! I get so happy to see and be with some of my good friends in nursing classes and life has been great to me even at times it can be a hassle. At this point, I'm just hoping to pass my classes with at least the minimum C- and if better, then I'd be the happiest dude in the world! I do hope to see you someday somehow. you've been such a great help to me on this site that one day I need to meet you and thank you, or at least let me treat you out somewhere! nurses will work for food ya know ;) haha! I'm hoping to get a CNA-like-type of job at the VA in SF or PA after my first semester hopefully, but we'll see how that goes. Wish me luck for the rest of the first semester, and I wish you luck for level 3!

Migs.
