Application period is about to start for everybody. I wanted to open a new thread for those who are applying to SFSU, to share information, give support to others and to see how fierce the competition is going to be this academic year.
Ooh dang.. still better than USF tho.. I think I'll see how the first semester goes. Thanks a lot! Do you have any advice on what I should get started on while Im waiting? We have orientation for the spring by the end of November, but I feel I should be getting started on something.BTW how are the teachers? I looked at rate my professors and majority of the level 1 teachers aren't on there.. kinda makes me nervous.
We finally got clarification on the cost of kaplan...it is $90 per semester x 5 semesters = $450 for the whole program so not bad. I'm not quite sure what you should be doing right now...I would say to buy your books, but you won't get the list until just prior to orientation. Once you find out what math book you're using, I suggest you get started on your math assignment ASAP because it is very tedious. As for professors, I only have ----, ----, ----, and ----. They're all nice and pretty good. I'm not sure about the other teachers as well as who will be teaching what next semester since they all rotate subjects.
This is a question for those of you who were accepted for the Fall of this year.
I will be starting in January and am curious if any of you who are currently in the program have any opinions about buying the textbooks new (and obtaining online access as well as the ability to download to ipad/pda) vs. buying the books used. Has anyone purchased the full package and been glad or purchased it and felt it wasn't that useful? I would welcome your opinion.
Thanks!
The book bundle from the bookstore (all new books) is a good deal if you want the ebook versions of the books, since it comes with it. This allows you to access the textbooks through your ipad/laptop/computer. I know some people paired up and split the bundle, where someone would take the physical books and the other one just used the ebooks. It really depends on it.
However, I think if you don't need ebooks or NEW textbooks, the best deal as always is just to buy them used on half.com or amazon. That was the case for me.. I think I saved at least $100 off the bookstore prices!
I have the same question about which is better? because in the orientation packet they indicate that the pageburst bundle is great for making care plans and doing research etc, being able to do a search as opposed to trying to find certain things through hundreds of pages for pieces of information.
Also, I'm impatiently wondering about nursing school and if anyone can ease my curiosity( tehe)!Do we wear scrubs or any type of certain dress code at school? or only for clinicals?
I know I will find out at orientation, but I am so darned curious!
You will probably wear scrubs to school once or twice a week depending on which teacher/class you have. Clinicals will be once a week and you have to wear white scrubs to that as well. Also, you probably won't be given too much information to quell your curiosity at orientation. You really won't feel calmed until you start classes.
As for the book bundle...I debated on getting it, but ended up buying all of my books new off of Amazon for about $300-400. The book bundle is a little more than $600 I believe. All the books in the bundle you may purchase separately...the only difference is pageburst. Honestly, at times I do wish I had pageburst because it does make looking up material for studying a little bit easier. However, I can simply look at the book's index and yield the same result (it only takes like a few minutes longer). It really is a personal preference if you think the convenience of pageburst is worth $200+.
IMPORTANT: Start your math assignment ASAP! Whether you buy the book bundle, or just buy the math book online...getting started should be your priority. The assignment is to:
1) Do the Pre-Test at the very beginning of the book. If you get 100%, you may skip to Unit 2. If you get 1 or more incorrect, then you must do every problem in Unit 1. Trust me, it is ALOT of tedious remedial math (I'm talking hundreds of problems). Then take the Unit 1 chapter Review.
2) Do all of Unit 2. every problem including chapter reviews.
3) Do the Post-Test at the end of Unit 2.
You may be wondering whether or not these problems will be collected. The answer, I'm sorry to say, depends on your teacher. However, it is very important that you get the math problems down because you will need to pass a Drug Calculation test with a score of 88% or higher in order to go to Clinicals. You only get 3 chances to pass. The Drug Calc test will be based on Unit 3-5, but utilizes the remedial math you brushed up on during Units 1-2. So it is really important to study this and get it done. I would say that the most stressful part of Level 1 is the first 5 weeks leading up to the Drug Calc test. After passing the test, almost everyone I spoke to felt a lot of stress lifted off our shoulders. The rest of level 1 will fly by and is fairly manageable as long as you keep up with your studying, reading, and assignments (meaning no procrastination).
Hope this helps!
Hey guys! It's been a while but would love to hear your stories since your acceptance letter. How were classes? Was the nursing program all that you could wish for? Or if you've been working on your prereqs since your acceptance, how were they at SF State?
And what are your plans now?
As for me, I was seriously running on empty with only two more weeks to go but I survived LOL. Boy, winter break couldn't have come sooner!
I'm slowly trying to get myself psyched for school again, but I have to admit it seems like we've reached the top of one mountain and over the horizon are still many more peaks to surmount...oh well, here we go again!
Right now, I'm looking for volunteer opportunities at local hospitals just to network. I heard that a student nurse can get internships at hospitals and clinics. I've light-heartedly googled some hospitals but no internship programs have turned up. Other folks have any thoughts or is this just a myth?
