Sending kids home

Published

I sent 4 kids home yesterday. I think 1 was actually sick.

What do you do when they have already called the parents on their cell to come get them before coming to see you?

Or the parents give them the get out of jail free card?

And who are these parents that seem to wait around for their kids' calls and rush up to school?

Do I have less control because my kids are older? And our cell phone policy is not enforced?

Lately, I've been meh, if your parents want to pick you up, go home.

I too will send those - "My mom said to go to the nurse and she will pick me up" - back to class until said mom picks them up especially if I don't think they are sick. For the ones that use their cells to call for a p/u and the office calls me looking for them - this will be an unexcused absence - rarely see them again.

Had an incident today. One of my high school students was ohhhhh so sick according to him. "Feel like I am gonna throw up. Stomach hurts. Was on the pot over the weekend. Had a birthday party. Just don't want to be at school and just want to go home and lay down". I was looking him in the eye the whole time. No fever. Repeatedly tried to get him to lay down and rest awhile. Nope, No Way, he was not interested in that answer. (Which tells me (as we all know), he is not that sick.) He says he will just go back to class. My gut tells me that he probably won't go back to class, I was thinking he would go hang out in the bathroom. I suggested to the Principal that he trails him and makes sure he gets back to class. Wellll......the student decided to excuse himself and left the other end of the building.

Needless to say, the Principal took over from there.

Sooooo glad that years of experience help us to develop a good gut feeling. Oh, these dear sweet children!! :nurse: :banghead: :whistling:

I am a middle school nurse and the calling home ill on their cell phone runs rampant here. It has gotten to the point that one of my first assessment questions is 'have you already called or texted your mom." If I get a yes and they are already on their way, I do a quick assessment and if they do not mee any exclusion criteria - back to class they go to wait it out. I document exactly what was said.

I have learned just to let it go. These are choices that the parent and their kid has made, not myself. At some point, they usually get themselves in attendance hot water and want my help. Sorry Charlie!!! I can't help you.

The attendance policy is in their handbook, the website, they sign a form on enrollment showing they undersatand. They are going to do whatever they want and I am just tired of preaching until I am blue in the face.

And then there are the seniors in HS who do not qualify for "Open Campus" last block of the day.....it is AMAZING how sick they are after lunch......how many appointments they have...instead of going to study hall.

This lovely h.s. student was the "fish that got away" yesterday. But, I just happen to be married to the Principal for almost 30 years, and there isn't much that the little lovelies get away with when it comes to issues that I deal with. My hubs knows what I am thinking and I know what he is thinking. He was actually just a few steps behind the student, or he wouldn't have gotten out of the building.

Hmmmmm...wonder what today will bring???? How many more days of school do we have left?????

Happy, Happy Wednesday!
