So as of yesterday the Senate passed Obama's healthcare bill; what does this mean for nurses and future nurses? I know there are other threads on this but they are older so I'm just wondering what will change

I don't think it passed yet. Discussion on the bill was formally ended. I believe the vote is Thursday.
As to how it impacts nursing, I have no idea.

who knows? It is probably a huge mess. I think the Dems objective was to get SOMETHING passed, the tweak it later. Meanwhile, if you are negatively affected, remember that Congress and the Pres are excluded from this plan. They get 100% free VIP care whereever they choose.

It means the health care system is about to gain 30 million new customers. If there wasn't a nurse shortage before, there certainly is now.
got to www.senate.gov and look up S3962 (number of bill). You can actually see the bill and who voted, etc.
What do you think this will do to nursing salaries?

never a truer statement spoken, but I think that payments may resemble something like medicaid or hopefully better....I hope it doesn't kill the system. So many variables....
I am expecting our profession will become like it is in other countries where nurses are more like handmaidens and less autonomous (and poorly paid!). I am not expecting hospitals to receive more revenue, only more customers.

Doesn't mean anything yet...bill still has to go to committee to try to merge with the House's plan
I wanted to add that medicaid in my state only pays $0.14 on the dollar at the max, so watch out healthcare system...

I need to check a source but I was listening to someone who gave an example of how much this will cost.
example:
Someone makes $54,000/year-they will pay approximately $9,000 out of pocket for insurance under the new government plan. How is this 'free'?
I currently pay $1,200 in premiums per year and have a max of $2,000 out of pocket (total $3,200). I understand that my company 'subsidizes' my premiums but do you think they are going to add the portion they pay now to my pay so I can offset the extra $5,800+ I will have to pay out of pocket ? (highly unlikely)
Good for my healthcare organization-bad for me.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I was a handmaiden in the UK in fact talking to some of my US friends I had a lot more autonomy than a US nurse, I would agree that pay in the UK for nurses is poor

Can we get some expert to answer the question without being political? I am also interested in knowing. Thanks
