Selected for urine test and used hand sanitizer

Nurses Recovery

Published

So I usually use hand sanitizer and never had a problem but now I'm worried because I stupidly sniffed my hand to see if they still smelled like gloves after I used it. Right after I did that I had instant regret. I'm worried I'll test positive for alcohol now. I've never drank since I've been in a recovery program. And I don't have a substance problem. Do yall think I'll be positive? Should I go pee a few times before I test? Any info is helpful.

Are you sure that's true if its a false positive though? Like zoloft can cause a false positive for Benzos but I don't know if you could test positive for benzos, say its d/t your zoloft and get it ruled a "prescription positive". I think thats more for if you test positive for zoloft, it would be a "prescription positive" for zoloft, not benzos. I honestly don't know, I've always been curious about this but I think thats why they tell us to avoid cough syrups and stuff that have alcohol in it

Is the end result the same though? You don't get ant penalty?

Yeh so all I'm talking about is controlled medication. Not false positives. Actual benzos or actual opiates. If you take some med with alcohol in it and it's known to have that etc. if you have a script you show it and that's that. None of my mood stabilizers or antidepressants have ever given a false positive.

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind my hijacking this thread to make you all aware that the BRN will be discussing the narcotic access and work requirements they recently added on diversion participants this coming Friday, June 21.

The BRN is increasing participants' amount of time in the program which prolongs the concern about what you're eating or what hand sanitizer you're using

I recommend everyone who is impacted by this attend and speak out during the public comment portion. Pass this along to other nurses who are concerned about the changes.

Because you were afraid to eat other things because they could cause a positive test?

I was just UBER careful. Did not eat out much and followed a list of do's and don'ts. Always ate a good protien source an hour prior to testing which prevented the low specific gravity/dilute urine problem.

One hour after I posted on this thread, I received a call from my case manager stating that my last two tests were ETG positive. I have been sober for 16 months. I requested a PETH, which was drawn this afternoon. I also met with my nephrologist yesterday and labs show I have a UTI. Does anyone know if a UTI will cause false positive results? I'm not backing down on this one. Thanks!

Just to follow-up/circle back/close this loop... I had a phone meeting with the MRO at Affinity. My PETH test was negative, but I still wanted to talk about the two positive urine ETG tests. The first order of business was, "one of the many reasons we can see a positive ETG like yours, is due to a UTI." I was so happy to share with him all the documentation for the UTI treatment.

Someone here shared that a UTI will cause a false positive ETG. Thank you for that.

Also, I am prescribed Carafate Suspension r/t GI surgery. It has ethyl alcohol in the cherry flavoring (which I found after some detective work). The MRO told me to stop taking that immediately LOL. OK buddy, slow your roll, you're 1/1 with the UTI. I'll talk to my surgeon about that. He asked me to send the label, which I'm pretty sure he didn't have on his "list" of approved/unapproved meds.

Be safe, everyone! Stay informed.

Can a uti cause a false positive blood hair or nail test?

While UTIs can cause False Positives for Alcohol, It doers not effect hair or  nail tests.
