Second Coursers

Published

Hello everyone!! Are there any second coursers there who might want to share their experiences while in nursing school?

Having to go back to school again, dealing with clinical instructors and regular students, pros and cons.. etc...the usual stuff second coursers have to deal with...Thank you!!!

as a second courser, i let the first timers do their job and not to rely on me. i just wish they will not call me ate and im just 30! its really hard to study and work at the same time. I'm at school from 7am to 1:30 then go to work afterwards.thanks to my flexible time at work.;) Im really enjoying anatomy. although they teach well, some CI really gives hard exams, both practical and lecture. so challenging.. Im excited in August for CHN duty!

first timer

A very memorable experience, doing things you never thought of doing again...going to school with students who are 15 years younger, but as time pass by you'll tend to go with the flow and you'll forget that you are older than them..lol, just enjoy every second of it.

after a 7-year gap, I went back to school to take up nursing.. it was really a fun experience wherein you are mixed w/ the younger generation & you'll be surprised on how much they respect you.. the difference is, second coursers are more focused and determined for we had set our minds on a plan.. the funny thing I experienced was I had to "reactivate" my brain cells for it sort of got "dormant".. LOL! goodluck to all peeps who'll have nursing as their second course..

It's really nice reading your stories here. So inspiring!

It's nice to read all of your stories... I'm also a second courser, now in my 4th year.. I can relate to most of your sharings.. I'm only 23.. and yet a lot of my classmates call me "kuya" and for some.. they even use "po" and "opo"... But being a second courser means having the chance to experience college life all over again.. I'm really having fun! Thanks for all those who shared their insights...

anyone who already graduated from nursing?

do you think we'll have a harder time getting into hospital?

why do some hospitals have age restrictions?

i don't understand the reason behind that....at all!!!

anyhow, gudluck for those 2nd coursers...

i am not sure in the philippines. but here in the u.s., the older the better :lol2:

why do some hospitals have age restrictions?

maybe only in the philippines. i don't really know the reason behind that either. probably because when you are younger, you don't know anything much, so you tend to say "yes" to everything, and your opinion cannot be heard? i don't really know. maybe because they would rather see thin, young innocent cute nurses, than those much older, more mature, assertive one...heck, i don't really know!

me neither!!!!!!!! when i was in the clinicals back then in pi, i see nurses get yelled at by the docs! here in the u.s. we work hand in hand, and the docs rely on us nurses big time!

I was once a second courser too.

And just like most of the posts above, i've gone through most of those "ate-calling" thing, being the leader, the confidante to the younger batchmates, et. al.

I had doctor classmates though so the usual respect were mostly given to them.

One thing that stressed me out though while i was in nursing school was the fact that expectations were too high on me/us second coursers. My instructors thought of us as geniuses in all aspects and most of the time, they won't teach and would just allow us to read our own textbooks! :uhoh21:

That was okay for the doctors of course.

And what mattered was when you pass the NLE, both the older doctor classmates and the younger first coursers would most likely be your colleagues. :lol2:

hi! in fairness to the doctors here in the philippines who tend to practice their profession and not go with the trend of doctors becoming nurses, they are now tamer than before. ;) i guess, they now know the value of nurses in their profession. and i believe, they're now scared that we nurses might outrun them in no time. :lol2:

recently, with the changes in the number of nurses working locally, we are greatly appreciated now. and i guess, that is a good initial step in uplifting nurse's morale.

as per age-issues, i tend to agree with you. :lol2: younger nurses aren't that assertive and aggressive with what they have to do as well as their rights so they are chosen than older ones. :)

i too had been fondly called "ate" by my first courser classmates. unlike some of u, i don't mind being called such because i know it's just out of respect that they address me as such..what bothers me though, is when someone who looks way older than me call me "ate" ;)

well, my first sem in nursing was not very good..only two of us 2nd coursers in class, me being the eldest at 26. having enrolled myself in an exclusive all girls catholic school was a mistake. i was forced to abide by the very strict rules of the school, which eventually led me to transfer to a more lenient school. there i met and found my new sets of friends (all 8 of us are 2nd coursers). having friends in nursing school with the same age or at least on the same level of maturity helped me survive nursing. don't get me wrong, i'm not in this only for the money. i do love nursing and the complexities of the practice, but there were times that i doubted if i made the right choice of leaving my job and taking on a new career. i am just thankful to have found friends who share the same dilemmas as i have being on the same stage in life :loveya:

I was a second courser too. I think of myself as the Ultimate Slacker.

But I found myself at the head of the class, Class Prez and Student council prez. How I got this still amazes me!!

I was more focused. I knew how to study(having come from Dental Medicine which was a more rigorous and rigid profession) and I formed my own study group. I taught my classmates how to divide the work and meet twice a week for discussions(each person responsible for a topic). It worked out well because the group stuck together until graduation needless to say, no one failed.
