Hello everyone!! Are there any second coursers there who might want to share their experiences while in nursing school?

Having to go back to school again, dealing with clinical instructors and regular students, pros and cons.. etc...the usual stuff second coursers have to deal with...Thank you!!!

hello, i was once a second courser. it's really fun going back to school. i think it is an advantage being a second courser because we already know our priorities, we know how to deal with people and we are experienced enough to handle situations. good luck

i have classmates before who are second coursers and as i have observed they are more focused in their studies than others. :)

haha...

just be cautious bout ur first courser classmates...

you'll find urself the leader in every work group or even the president of your class...

find excuses specially if you are married and have kids. that could get you off the hook.

the first courser are very amusing, you'll see that they really respect you.

be prepared. suddenly you'll find yourself having lots of younger brothers and sisters. they'll be calling you "ate" or "kuya", some of us are even being called "mommy" or "daddy".

but, it's really fun getting back to school.

this is so true.:lol2:

Nice tip, mashkaimitopoh! Thanks!

Uhm, and about the "ate" and "kuya" thing, I really don't like that. It's too awkward. ;) Actually, I'd like to go to an all 2nd courser school.

its nice to go back to school and wear ur all-white uniform...with white shoes...white everything =)

going to your duty wld be a humbling experience...esp when u give ur service to those who are less fortunate...

in school there wld be people who are actually older than you who will call u "ate" or "kuya"... they think they are just being polite, but i feel otherwise... but then ul jus get used to it...

assignments and other minor subjects will bore you...

new ones will excite you...

familiar lessons will make you feel "ah! im super!" "excellent!"

i wish u good luck and enjoy the journey...

you'll love being a nurse!

Hola, I am a second courser… actually after my graduation last March 2004, I started my second nursing course April of the same year and graduated last February of 2006… It is an advantage if you are a full time student because some of my classmates who have jobs had difficulty in managing their time especially during Hospital Duties… and of course the countless sleepless nights of making our NCPs… it is fun going back to school especially for those who are scholars of their moms and dads… Good Luck, have fun and God Bless

as a second courser, i could say i had the best time of my life studying nursing. as the oldest in my class, i was very respected by both my classmates and clinical instructors. i was actually given a lot more slack than the rest (not to say this extended to the academic realm, although i did well in class).

because i was a second courser (and more exposed to the wiles of the world), you pretty much know how to handle stress and the art of interpersonal dealings.

A very memorable experience, doing things you never thought of doing again...going to school with students who are 15 years younger, but as time pass by you'll tend to go with the flow and you'll forget that you are older than them..lol, just enjoy every second of it.

Hello! My name is Paulo, I just turned 40 last June 30. YES I AM A PROUD SECOND COURSER. My first course was really so so unrelated to nursing --- ACCOUNTANCY! I was an accountant for more than 10 years in one of the leading computer school in the Philippines (STI).

I graduated from the Nursing course last March 2005. Whew, at first it was really difficult for me to adjust to much younger classmates I had during my those BSN days. Yes, of course I had my share of being left alone most of the time especially during their chit-chats ! I felt different and outcasted at first until Ive known some of my classmates who were also second coursers and guess what? we grew in numbers until we were classified and re-grouped as one section called "The Second Coursers", we were 30+ in that class!

And it was really an amazing and beautiful experience! Our ages ranged from 20+ to 40+! Most were already successful professionals in their respective first career choices who shifted gears ang took nursing for one reason or another!

I could say SECOND COURSERS perform better in academics compared to non- SC! Being more matured and responsible adults, we took up nursing with dedication and ardent commitment. Everything was done with PASSION! Never did we pay our clinical instructors for special favors! Sometimes our CIs were even threatened with our presence coz we could speak better and more fluent English than

them LOL! (It's ok my dear CI's, English is not our native tongue anyway, but please study your English!)

Congratulations to all the SECOND COURSERS. Shifting Gear to the Nursing Profession could be the best decision youve ever made in your life! Do not get intimidated with the younger ones! In clinical practice, it is observed that we are more assertive, competitive and more critical in our thinking!

Few exceptions though for those SC who bought their diplomas somewhere (Ive read it in one thread here). Shame on you, there are no shortcuts in life! Work hard and you will earn your fruits someday! Do it the easy way and life will not be easy for you!! Someday, you will suffer the consequences of your illegal action. It really shows in the clinical areas those SC with "ready-made" BSN diploma who cant even aspirate a drug from a vial and cant get BP accurately LOL!

I have already passed all the stateboard examinations and now awaiting for bigger challenges ahead of me. I know it will come very soon coz I worked and prayed hard for it! Many of us SECOND COURSERS are affected with the ongoing RETROGRESSION but we are less bothered because we can always gol back to our first profession!! Hurray for SECOND COURSERS!

Congratulations to all the deserving SECOND COURSERS!!!

Fly high!

most of my friends in the nursing school are second coursers so we all jive. ive been a victim of "you're older, so you be the leader" mentality of some first coursers. at first it was kinda irritating because it hasnt sinked in that i was older than these people. hey, i was the youngest in my class when i was on my first course. but eventually i was able to accept my fate and realized that no matter how "babyface" i look, these younger uns will always attach 'ate' before my name. sad. :(

about the leader thing, when i like the project i say yes. but when i dont like what was being asked, i just refuse and tell them that since im older, you have to follow my rules. haha. :)
