Hey everyone! I didn't see a thread for 2019's transfer cohort hopefuls so I figured I'd start one. Everyone get their applications submitted on time? :)
Just now, Cashlee said:Has anyone heard about financial aid and scholarship awards from SU? I didn't receive any information about it in my admissions packet and can't find anything about it on MySU. I hope we hear about financial aid soon!
I got my financial aid awards yesterday. I received a email and then looked at it on the portal. Unfortunately for me, it’s not enough in loans and I don’t qualify for any scholarships so I’m freaking out. I’m going down there today after work to figure it out with an advisor. So you should be getting an email soon and you can also keep checking your portal. I wonder if anyone else is in the same boat as me!
Cheese23, I am definitely in the same boat. I used up nearly all of my federal loan assistance doing my first BS and certificate programs. I was only offered enough loans to cover about 1/4 of the total cost for a year. I emailed the financial aid office to ask about other options or if there were any scholarships I could qualify for and they said no because I'm a post bacc student. They did send me links to scholarship info outside of the school as well as approved private education loan companies in order to get loans to cover the remaining tuition and fees. I do have a little bit of assistance from the union through my work but thats still only about $5000 per calendar year. I don't have any other choice personally as I don't have savings or make enough to pay as I go and still afford all my other bills. Good luck in your search! I'm looking for whatever I can find for scholarships but theres still no guarantee as they are all very competitive and require a lot of time and effort just to apply.
Okay, I just had my meeting with the counselor and it pretty much reiterates what Duckygirl8203 said. As a post-bacc student, you only qualify for $12,500 a year until your previous loans plus whatever you need for Seattle U total $57,500. At that point, you will no longer qualify for federal student loans. The nursing school provides $4,000 in loans per year that show up in your financial aid portal in late August/early September. At that point, you need to go to seattleu.edu -> private loans and you will see the list of private loan venders. This includes Sallie Mae, Wells Fargo, Discover, and a few others I didn't recognize. The total cost of tuition for the first year which includes a nursing fee of $463 each quarter is $48,129 for someone like me who is not living on campus. She told me to start getting in touch with these private venders at the end of May in order to have everything ready by fall.
She also directed me to HRSA.gov which are the scholarship resources for post-bacc nursing students that SU's financial services recommends. So, even though they are competitive and a lot of work, I will probably spend the entire month of April trying to get a least one scholarship. Like Ducky, I also have $5000 tuition reimbursement at my facility so at least I can pay that back to my private loans at the end of the year.
One question I didn't ask was whether joining Phi Theta Kappa would be worth it. I keep getting an invitation to join even though my parents made me join during my first undergraduate degree. I never did anything with Phi Theta Kappa except for getting to wear cords to my graduation. If anyone has any insight on whether joining would be worth it for scholarships, I would love the feedback. Otherwise, I'm going to call Financial Services again tomorrow and ask them if it would help at all.
Hope this helps other post-bacc students like myself. I was definitely freaking out in her office and I felt close to tears. She kept telling me that this is an incredibly good investment and that I'm entering a really amazing career. I figured, if I was willing to pay for medical school before I shifted gears, I can make this work too.
Thank you for all of the info!! Can I ask who you met with? Sounds like it was beneficial to talk to someone face-to-face. Sorry, no I don’t know much information about Phi Theta Kappa although I’ve received emails from them too. Maybe their website could be helpful? I wish you luck with all of the scholarships!! Fingers crossed.
So I was just checking up on the acceptance requirements and noticed we actually have until as late as May 1st to accept or decline admission and pay the deposit. In case anyone was still waiting to make decisions, when you click on the admission decision link in your portal is reads "reply and deposit are required no later than May 1st or 30 days from receipt of admission decision, whichever is later." (not verbatim) So for those that were admitted and not wait listed we have until May 1st. If you are moved up on a wait list then you have 30 days from whenever you receive your acceptance notification.
On a separate note, I received acceptance to UW BSN as well so I may be going there instead mainly for financial reasons. I wish you all the best of luck in nursing school and look forward to possibly working with some of you one day!
