Seattle University BSN applicants 2012

U.S.A. Washington

Hi all,

I didn't see any threads for Seattle University, so I thought I would start one. What classes are you taking, current GPA, extracurriculars, etc? Any thoughts on the application process?

I guess I will start by saying that I am currently finishing 2 prerequisites. Currently my overall GPA is 3.3 and pre-req GPA is a 3.9. I'm starting a CNA program, so hopefully that goes well. My overall GPA is low, so I am worried about that.

I am SO nervous just thinking about it!!

Please excuse grammatical mistakes, I blame my phone! ;)

Thank you lovedogs31 for the kind support. I too think i have over obsessed with my application. I had called and spoke to one of the counslors who advised me that there is nothing i can do other than may be email them with an official update on the re-take. So i did that. I promised myself that today would be the last time i will worry about my application or call the SU with questions. I know they are busy and i dont think its fair for them or me to plague them with questions.

I think so too that lately i have been way too anxious and its not healthy. The class that i am repeating is general psychology. The funny part is that i took lifespan psychology only once and i got B+ on that. My other pre-reqs were greatly done with mostly A's and B's. The psych 100, brought my GPA really low....so i really dont know. And to answer your question, yes i have had atlest 1 year volunteer work done at UW med center, then worked as a cna later on. That is why i have very little hope but like you said i will stay positive.

A word of advice to all of us...lets stay healthy by not obsessing over our application. The answer is either yes or no. If its a no, then that only means that we still have another chance to try again. Good luck to al of us.

NB/ i have also applied to other schools but for some unexplainable feeling, my heart really wants to get in to the BSN program at SU. :/

immystic, 1 year of volunteer work+your work experience is awesome and you shouldn't downplay that! I feel the same way you do about SU. I have been to 2 information sessions and met with an advisor which has given me the opportunity to meet the faculty and really explore the school/program. All of the faculty members were so kind and encouraging, and their values of social justice and community involvement really appeal to me. I have good feelings about the program and school in general. :) I cannot believe we still have another month to go of waiting!

thank you lovedogs31. i have been to su and it’s really beautiful and if there is one best thing among many that su has and which i love about is their kind, professional and supportive attitude which by far surpasses any other school that i had to call about their program. they not only answer our questions and worries but they also really care, which i felt after talking to them. su is giving me hope which is also a bit scary because its either i will faint with happiness if they accept or cry if they don’t. lol. i have also looked at their programs and have seen a lot of active community programs. i wish that i could be a part of it too someday.

i wish us all they very best. i too can’t wait for next month. i try to focus on other things so that i don’t get myself too anxious. j

I am a student attending Bellevue College.

Like some of the readers of this thread I wondered what math class I should take to meet SU's RN math requirement.

Following Ms. Tower's reply to my Email inquiry I enrolled in Math 138.

Math 138 is an advanced algebra course with "real world" word problem examples in social sciences, business, and health care.

Following this class I was able to score 100% on the TEAS algebra questions for my ADN application, so I found it to be useful for applying to nursing school.

Also of note:

The SU MSN application review process appears to be occuring on a later time schedule than last year (likely due to the snow week in Seattle in January). Interview notifications for the MSN program occurred beginning 2/11/12 that occurred in late January in 2011 (source: allnurses.com blog threads).

Based on this, we may be safe in extrapolating that this applies to their BSN-transfer application review as well.

Email (edited to remove contact information):

According to the SU Transfer Guide: http://www.seattleu.edu/registrar/TransferGuides.aspx

MATH 138 or MATH 156 is MATH 118 (CORE: MATH) at SU

MATH 141 or MATH 105 is MATH 120 (CORE: MATH) at SU

Since Math 110 is the minimum requirement, you will meet the requirement if you take either Math class.

cura te ipsum, I also go to Bellevue College. Are you done with the pre-reqs? Did you apply to the Bellevue College ADN program?

I have complete most of the BC pre-requisites and applied for consideration for their Fall 2012/Winter 2013 ADN program in addition to SU. I didn't want all my eggs in one basket ...

I have not attended and completed a CNA program. I likely will do so at the school in Shoreline sometime during the spring.

There is a BC thread on this site, and from last year's entries it appears that students with aggregate TEAS scores from somewhere near 83-84 were competitive for Winter 2012 off of the wait list. It anecdotally appears TEAS scores in the high eighties were competitive for the Fall 2011 class. It appears TEAS scores overall were lower when the TEAS V was mandated instead of the TEAS IV. It will be interesting to observe how the change to only evaluating TEAS V scores impacts the Fall 2012/Winter 2013 cohort. It appears it was somewhat of a mixed bag last year with both versions of the test evaluated for admission, as there appears to be some correlation issues with the differences in subject matter covered on the IV and V versions for the science section. Scores for V version were reported to be 5-10 points lower than IV by some blog entries, but verification of this would need to be determined by discussing this with the BC RN program staff.

Hello everyone,

I am looking forward to possibly starting this program as well. I have just checked my app status and it is all complete and will be pending notification with some of you in late March is what the Admissions rep just told me.

I currently have a 3.56 cumulative GPA, but I also work full time while going to school full time. I remember Gwen Jackson, admissions rep, stating that they not only look at grades but also your ability to demonstrate that you can handle multitasking, such as working and school while maintaining grades. There are so many factors that go into this application, I just want to hear now as well.

I additionally applied to the UWSON and will be taking the proctored exam tonight... Anybody else taking it tonight as well?

I'm just really excited for this process to finally be here and almost complete...

Good luck to everyone and maybe we will run into each other as competition at the essay tonight... :p

I took the UWSON proctored essay tonight as well! How do you think you did?

I'm glad SU will send out letters next month! I'm tired of waiting.

I think I did quite well. I started with the calculations, since those were a breeze and then proceeded to unpack the essay question. I probably took too long on the rough draft and outline part. I did not start writing my final until the 20 minute notice. Damn I was tryin to write as legible as possible...

One thing I have heard from previous applicants who are in theprogram now or who have graduated in the last 5 years is that they like to see the willingness to take a scenario in which they aren't comfortable and how they would approach the situation. I think if I picked either A or B I would have got too focused on the clinical aspect of the patient and would have missed the idea of applying listening, compassion and respect to the patient care setting with the goal of a therapeutic healing environment.

I am really concerned about one spelling error I made... I started to spell through like "throgh", I tried to slip a U in there, but realizing that wouldn't work I put one line through it and then spelled it correctly.

I only applied to UW and SU, Im confident I shloud get into one if not both. Perhaps I will get shot down though on both of them. I feel I bring alot of experience, especially working with an underserved population here at Harborview, Seattle U seemed to love that and told me to use that in my personal statement. "Altruism at its finest" they said. We'll see.

Good luck to you, until 1-2 months from now... AHHHHHH

Hi! This is my first post! I applied to Seattle U last year and got denied :( it was really rough on me and it was my top choice.... This year I am applying again hoping to get in. I have a 3.1 CUM GPA and a 3.7 pre rec GPA last year I applied with a 3.1 CUM and a 3.6 prerec GPA... but this year i have over a year experience working at a physicians office as a certified nursing assistant. And I also graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from Western Washington University... although my transcript grade from there is like a 2.8 :(. I have learned many new things which I hope they can see i added in my essay, as well as i took microbiology and redid chem to get an A. I spoke with a nursing counselor as well, to what could better my chances and they said take microbiology and do well (check) get a better grade in chemistry (check) and get experience (check). So hopefully by doing that they will see how passionate I am about becoming a nurse and going to Seattle U. I am on the same page as all of you guys and hope to get in!

I applied to the ABSN program at UW and sadly did not get in either... I feel so rejected! Hopefully SU will bring good news... what do you think are my chances? Im so nervous!!!
