Seattle University APNI 2015

U.S.A. Washington

Well, I know it's early.

Anyone applying for 2015 start?!?

Ok, sorry to be blowing up this thread... but could anyone help me to understand the difference between a personal and a professional goal? I thought that a personal goal would be something along the lines of "striving to provide the most culturally competent patient education" and a professional goal would be something like "working in a community clinic serving vulnerable populations" or "leading a diabetes support group" but my friend disagreed.

Does anyone have any examples they could provide? Or any help at all? haha thanks!

lumen4,

I wonder if by saying two pages max if they mean double-spaced or not because that actually makes a difference. I'm assuming probably double-spaced though.

Yep. Double spaced

I think that a professional goal would be like "Why do you want to be a nurse practitioner/whatever track of the master's program you want to pursue?" or "Why do you want to have a career in nursing?" And the personal goals would be more alongside the examples you mentioned: "work in a community clinic serving vulnerable populations or striving to provide the most culturally competent patient education or leading a diabetes support group"

Example: You can become a doctor (career/professional goal), but what you do with that M.D. degree depends on your own personal goals. I mean you can go help people in Africa if you wanted to.

Anyways that's just my opinion. :cat:

Thanks zoikers! I'm not sure why this is so confusing for me haha.. I think I am just over thinking it :/

So for professional: I want to be an FNP so that I can provide primary care to underserved populations throughout their lifespan ...?

Does something like that work?

I feel like you might want to address why you want to do nursing in general or why you want your master's in nursing for professional goals. I feel like professional goals are more of why do you want to do this career? And then maybe go more into your specific goals for the FNP like provide primary care to underserved populations for your personal goals. Personal goals are like what you want to do with the career in nursing.

But yeah don't overthink it!

Thanks zoikers. Can you think of an example that would illustrate a personal goal and a professional goal? I swear I am a somewhat intelligent human... This is driving me nuts though haha

Just try to address the part of the prompt "reasons for choosing APNI and particular specialty" and maybe why you want to do nursing and I think you'll be fine. Don't focus on the professional vs. personal definitions if you are getting confused. I think you are overthinking it. You still have plenty of time to work on it.

An example that illustrates both together: I want to do nursing because I like helping people. The reason I am applying for master's in nursing specifically for FNP is because I want to provide primary care to undeserved populations.

You also don't have to address professional AND personal together. It really depends on how you are structuring your essay. Or you can call/e-mail admissions for more clarification if you are really stuck as I might not be right about all this. Good luck!

Thank you.. again :) haha

I think I've finally got it figured out, I am lucky to have a cousin who's an M1 to answer all of my questions about essays/applications/resumes.. even if it is med vs nursing, much better than nothing!

Well guys... application deadline is getting close! I don't have anything constructive to say other than I am getting nervous :/

I have been working on my letter of intent for a couple weeks now and I'm worried that I sound too generic... But I also think that I've read my letter over and over and over again and I can't even see it for what it really is anymore.

I know that we're all "competition," but I truly hope everyone is doing well through this whole process.

I know everyone has been working hard completing prerequisites and getting experience and now getting this application together.

It's incredible that so much hard work has led up to THIS.

THIS. Applications. NOW.

Anyone else freaking out as much as me?!

It's okay don't worry! And yes, I definitely agree we've all been working hard and don't forget that HARD WORK PAYS OFF!!! :yes:I haven't even started the personal statement yet, but I'm probably gonna use parts from my main personal statement which I wrote that I have been catering to other schools. I finished filling out the app for the most part though.

Maybe you should have a friend read your personal statement over? In my opinion, just step away from your personal statement maybe for a week and then come back to it with fresh eyes. It really helps. I feel you when you say you've been reading it over and over.

We can get through this application process together guys! :cat:

I am feeling okay for the moment.. I know I will get more anxious in the weeks to come though. Right now I'm mostly stressed about getting through the GRE on Nov 3rd though :bookworm:

I have 3 personal statement "starters" so far, the part that kind of tells a story that I can then link to why me/why NP/why FNP etc., so I have a ways to go on the 4 essays I need to write for the different programs I'm applying to. My resume is pretty much good (I hope), I've had multiple people look at it, including my med student cousin. I also met with all of the people I'm asking for LORs from today to chat with them about it, so that's in the works too now :)

I have a question one of you may be able to answer. Is there a certain order we need to turn things in? For example, can my references send in their letters before I officially submit my app? Or can I send in my transcripts before I officially submit my app?
