Seattle University APNI 2015

U.S.A. Washington

Well, I know it's early.

Anyone applying for 2015 start?!?

I decided on the FNP track because I would like to work with a varied population, not just pediatrics or adults. I didn't think I'd really enjoy working with children until I substitute taught. That was a really eye opening experience for me. I was previously pre-med but after a few shadowing experiences I decided it wasn't for me. The thing that always differentiated the APRN from the physician was that they spent more time with their patients and really seemed to have a better understanding of them. I want to have that relationship with the patients. I am not sure how my GPA will be, as of now it is a 3.51 but I expect it to go up the next semester. So I think that should be decent but I am counting on my life experiences to be the main component of my application. I still have to take the GRE and have the psych courses to complete for pre-reqs.

FNP track applicant here! I applied last year but didn't get in. What a bummer that was.

This year I have all my prereqs done, as well as a half-dozen extra biology and chemistry courses including a cadaver dissection which was an incredible experience. I've also been working as a caregiver since finishing prereqs in June so I'm hoping that my application will be a bit more competitive this time around.

I'm also applying to FNP programs at Simmons, MGH Institute, UMass Worcester, and Vanderbilt.

Edit: I meant to ask if anyone else applying to Simmons who got grief about the ochem requirement? I did a quarter of ochem for science majors after a year of gen chem and they did not seem too keen on it only being 3.3 semester credits.

I have a question for you guys... I took some of my prerequisites on the semester scale and SU obviously runs on the quarter scale. On the website it says that one semester credit is equal to about 1.5 quarter credits.

It asks for the courses to be the equivalent of 5 quarter hours.

My semester classes are pretty much all 3 semester hours which according to their conversion equals 4.5 quarter hours.

Do you think I will need to take these classes over?

Have any of you run into this problem?

It is not an issue - very common for people to come from the semester system and it all transfers no problem. The only classes you may need to take over are ones that are not w/in certain time limits.

Thanks anichka! You just relieved so much stress....

Also, I remember you from the forums last year. I was a lurker, but not quite ready to apply yet. Are you applying to SU and PLU again this year? I am applying to both... PLU being my first choice. Maybe we will be classmates :)

I got into SU this year so I am already in the program now. I was bummed about not getting into PLU, but there are pros and cons to both programs.

Oh I had no idea! I just assumed because you were on the forum you were going through the application process again. A congratulations are in order!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions, I truly appreciate it!

Both programs are very good! I'm all about PLU because it is closer in proximity to where I live. If I end up at SU I will either need to commute or maybe look into relocating.

How is the program going for you so far?

PLU is closer to me too (I live in Olympia) and I ended up renting an apartment for the summer. I am going to try commuting this fall though because classes are only on Mondays and Fridays and my clinicals are on Saturdays in Tacoma.

So far, it is pretty good. We did have a challenging quarter though, and I am thankful for a break right now!

In terms of preparing for SU applications, I would recommend several things: be well acquainted with the mission of the school/CON. If you have time now, volunteer work is always helpful! And shadowing an NP, if you can find one, may benefit you as well.

PLU appealed to me because they get more clinical hours (1000 versus SU's 660), and I just felt at home more on their campus. They were planning to switch to DNP though (maybe this year?) so I don't know how that may affect people hoping to do the ELMSN to become a family nurse practitioner.

Hi Everyone!

I have been lurking on this blog for quite a while. I was wondering how everyone is doing with the application process? I'm nervous already and haven't even applied yet! I have a 3.8 gpa in my prerequisites but only a 2.9 gpa in my prior degree. I graduated with a bachelor's in Recreation over six years ago, and have greatly improved my grades, I fear that SU will only look at my past GPA and not my current. I'm curious how everyone else's GPA is on their pre-reqs? Does anyone have volunteering or CNA experience? What about the GRE? How did you guys do?

I'll also be applying to the FNP APNI track.

Hey bennettaeb,

I know how you feel about being nervous. I applied to Seattle U last year but didn't get in so I'm hoping I can pull it off this year. I didn't have my prereqs completed last year so that might have played a part but who knows, right? Plus, I automatically think everyone else who is applying must have way better grades than I do and I psych myself out on my chances of getting in. I'm just trying to remember that I've done all that I can do with the time that I've had.

I was in the same boat as you with the undergraduate GPA. I took a bunch of post-bacc science and math classes (i.e. a year of general chemistry, a quarter of orgo, calculus I & II, molecular bio) in order to get my grades up as well as show that I can hang under a heavy science course load. I ended up pulling my undergrad to a 3.3 and my prereq GPA to a 3.95. I've done maybe 50 hours of volunteering at a local hospital and I've shadowed an NP but only once. I also work as a caregiver (home care aide, not a CNA) for the elderly and disabled. My GRE was 157 verbal, 151 quantitative, and 4 on writing which is sad because I actually really like writing.

I am curious if anyone could shed insight on this question.

I finished a bachelors degree in History and Economics 3 years ago and have take all of my prerequisites at community college. I did take them in the Seattle CC system (which I've heard are looked highly-ish upon) AND HAVE A 3.98, yet I'm wondering if this will be a negative on my resume?
