Seattle University APNI 2015

Well, I know it's early.

Anyone applying for 2015 start?!?

From my understanding, most people take their prereqs at a community college. So no I do not see this as negative.

I'm also curious, not that it truely matters, but for those of you currently enrolled what percentage of the cohort is male?

I think we have 10 guys in our cohort... think there's about 64 of us total.

Hey all! I am applying for the 2015 entering class! I'm applying to SU and PLU...super nervous about only applying to two programs. Anyone start the application for SU? I'm confused about the recommendations...the FAQ for applying says "A current or former professor who knows you well, and your employer provide a good balance, but more important than who they are is their ability to speak to the qualities that will make you successful in the program" so I thought I'd get recommendations from an employer and the director of a clinic I volunteered at. However, on the Recommendations page of the online application, at the top of the page it says "At least one of your recommenders needs to be an academic reference." Thoughts? I'll probably just e-mail Grad Admissions for clarification but maybe someone here knows! Thanks!

Hello, I went to Seattle U's APNI info session last week on Oct 1st and they said that they understand if its been some time since your previous coursework that it is ok to not have an academic reference but important to have 2 references that know your work in different capacities. Like an employer and volunteer supervisor.

The room was overflowing with people so that made me more nervous about how competitive this program is! Good luck!

Did anyone else attend the APNI informaton session last week on October 1? The room was overflowing with people and they let us know that they have, if I remember right. 10 spots for CNM (which is what I am pursuing), 28 for FNP, and 12 for Pysch and can't remember for Gero.

Anne Hirsch led the presentation and she said that only the GPA of the last 2 years of our undergraduate degree is ranked for admission but yesterday I emailed Graduate Admissions for clarification and they told me that the last 90 quarter or 60 semester credits no matter what level they are (undergrad or graduate, pre-req) is all they look at. So for me, my GPA is going to be calculated from my graduate work and prereqs since its my most recent work. This is of course, according to the Graduate Admissions office. Any one know if the School of Nursing ranks us differently in addition to the graduate admissions? I'm confused as to why I've been told different things regarding GPA rankings.

Hi Everyone, I'm just starting to do my SU application. SU is my only school so definitely putting all eggs in one basket. Trying for FNP specialty. I do have one question... does anyone know how long the personal statement is suppose to be on average? Really anxious and excited to go through this journey with all of you.

Buckeyed,

I would say from reading advice on how to write a personal statement online it's supposed to be about 1-2 pages. From the other FNP programs I'm gonna apply to they usually limit it to 2 pages double-spaced 11-12 font 1 inch margins. If there isn't a limit I would limit it to 3 pages double spaced 12 font. If you write more it just becomes too long.

Hi all! So glad I found this. I am applying for FNP. I recently graduated from Western, and two of my friends from WWU are also applying (FNP)!

I was at the info session on 10/1, and they made a point to say to keep the essay UNDER 2 PAGES (max). They even said "extra points for brevity!"... yet they also said keep it longer than 1 page. Double space, 11/12 font (can't remember that right now). And they also said to really highlight how your goals align with SU's vision/mission (aka answer the essay questions directly, don't make them infer anything).

I have an awesome book called "Graduate Admission Essays: Write Your Way Into Your School of Choice" by Donald Asher, which I highly recommend. There's even 2 sample MSN/DNP essays in it.

I got my BS in Public Health and originally wanted to get my MPH in Global Health, but then I interned at a non-profit for a while and did some other volunteering and realized that I wanted to have more interaction with individuals. I wanted to verify that this was what I really wanted so I got a job at a hospital and immediately fell in love with everything about it.

I want FNP because I am still extremely interested in global health, I just want to play a different role than I originally thought. I would love to be an FNP and work with Doctor's without borders. But ultimately, my goal is to be an NP for underserved populations of all kinds. I am extremely excited about SU because I feel as though their values lines up perfectly with mine.

Wow, I hope we both get in, we have very similar goals/backgrounds :) My BS is in Community Health and I want to be an NP to work with underserved/vulnerable populations using both my health ed/health promotion skills and through providing primary care. I also have a special interest in health literacy and innovative patient education (aka providing it in a way that works for that person/culture, etc. whether I have to do an interpretive dance, show them a video, whatever!) I also am very interested in serving with MSF/DWB someday. I was starting to think my 3 years of French in HS were for nothing :) Have you looked into Nurse Corps or Health Service Corps? I am hoping to get into their loan repayment program after graduating as an NP...

I haven't but I will be sure to! Thank you for the advice :)
