Seattle University -- APNI 2011

Published

I've been a reader of these message boards for some time and thought I'd finally start participating. I didn't see a thread for the SU APNI 2011 application process, so I thought that as the deadline is this week I would start a thread and see how everyone's process went. I'm interested in the primary care np track myself.

Well the first year I wasn't even done with half my prereq's but just applied for the hell of it. I also have A's in my prereqs and a 3.72 GPA and when I interviewed last year and didn't get in I talked to Prof Carr. She let me know to maybe do shadows and more volunteering. So this past year I did 2 job shadows and have volunteering at a non-profit retirement community and hospice. I have also volunteered in my past. They take thier mission statement very seriously so be sure to emphasize that in the interview. Also, I appled for the GNP track and it was 2 people interviewing me as well as last year. Thats crazy you still haven't heard back yet becuase with all of your exposure it seems as though you would be a shoe in!

I applied to the FNP track and was told that there will only be one faculty interviewing me.. How weird!! Is this everyone's experience??

I only had one person interview me, too and I'm midwifery

I only had one person interview me, too and I'm midwifery

That's good to hear. Just thought it weird that this year there is only one faculty interviewing, since there were usually two faculty from previous posts.

Do you happen to know how many people they are accepting into each track this year?

I don't know about each track, but when I asked how big the midwifery cohort was she said its about ten, but that includes people who are already RNs, so I'm guessing about 5-7 midwifery, which leaves 45-43 spread between the other specialties. The website says the APNI program is about 50 altogether. I'm totally losing it waiting. I was so nervous during my interview that I hope I wasn't rambling. hahaha

They told me I'm on the waitlist which to me is a rejection. Why in the world would they do that to me? I have everything I guess! I'm so devestated and been crying for the past 4 hrs. They couldn't give me any good reasons just liek maybe yr letter of intent wasn't good enough! I don't know how can I survive this.....As in all prereqs, medical back ground, patient exposure and......and comments guys?

Im real sorry, I know it hurts a lot. I would set up a meeting with one of the faculty from that department and ask them if they can tell you why. Last year when I met with Prof. Carr she was able to break down everything: my letter, my grades, my interview. She told me they use a point system to score everyone on. So maybe if you meet with someone they can let you know how you were scored. But I would def do it in person because the 1st year i was rejected I emailed why and they just told me it's confidencial and they couldn't say.

I was just there. They were giving hints like oh it might be yr letter of intent or your medical school GPA 7yrs ago which was 3.0 and now the pre-reqs are 4.0 but to me tha's not even an excuse since my medical school GPA is from another country. I talked to Dr. ***** in person right now but she was just trying to calm m down with like oh u r a very good applicant and we r competitive and other BSs.Angelis can I have yr email address? I will defifnetly talk to one of the facualty members as well. My email is [email protected] tnx for yr help it will be nice if I can email u as well. Still crying with a big question mark? They interview some people from other states over the phoen and yet they knew me, that really bugs me

sure, its [email protected]. You sound like a really good applicant to me. I was also wondering if you have much volunteer experience? When I was reading everyones bloggs last year, it seemed as though all of the people who got in had a ton of volunteer experience, which is what got me off my butt more this past year to increase my odds.

Lolitabig, maybe time for self-reflection? Depending on the country and school you attended, your degree may not hold much credibility in the US -- right or wrong. These are all very competitive programs and like you implied, you already have your MD, why take a slot over someone that could be new to the industry. Let that other person fulfill their dream. You're already there.

not all of us can be as "stabe" or "secure" as you, knowonder, jeeze?....

Knowonder,

I want my slot and no one else's what do u mean? And u can apply with any back ground and I'm new this industry too. I don't know what are you trying to say?! I am a very cometitive applicant...

I agree, this is no place to question someone's dream or why they want to apply to a program. This is a program lolitabig really wanted (and this is still within their reach, people get off the wait list all the time!)

But I will say, as (helpful, I hope) constructive criticism, admissions committees take grammar, punctuation, and spelling very seriously. As you mentioned English is not your first language, and I would highly recommend having a native speaker look over your admissions essays in the future. This is no dig at your command at the English language, you speak English better than I speak any other language, and bilingual health professionals are highly sought after. You seem to have a lot of passion and determination, don't give up!
