  1. I was born in another country as well and moved to the U.S. around 3 or 4 years old. Don't worry about your age. You'll find that you'll be in good company because the majority of the people in our cohort are very mature and driven regardless of age. I think every year is different in terms of how many people they take off the waitlist. I know that in our year, there were lots of people taken off and in other years only a few. It all depends on how many people decline their offer and how many people they take for the traditional MSN.
  2. Yes they most definitely ask how you will handle the two-three years of the program in regards to social and financial support. I think these questions are intended to see whether the student is realistic about their expectations. Having kids will not count against you. Many of the students in our cohort has kids and are doing extremely well. Calinca-when you say foreigners, what do you mean by that? International students? Ethnicity other than Caucasian? Our cohort has a mix of different ethnicity, but like any other program, Caucasian is dominant. Not quite sure about the typically age, but definitely more toward the 30's. There are a few in their early 20's, but the majority are older, considering that this is usually a second career for most students.
  3. I can't speak to everyone in my cohort in terms of their background, but here's my stat. I applied to the FNP track and got in the very first time that I applied. I have a BS in business administration, Master in social work, undergrad and graduate GPA 3.8, science prereq GPA 4.0, and I didn't have to take the GRE because it was waived since I had a Master degree. I am not a representative from SU, but like I wrote in my previous post, I don't think volunteer experience is everything. They look at the overall package! I had only four months worth of volunteer experience! However, I have 1 year experience as a school social worker, another year in behavioral health, and about 7 months or so in nursing home and as a residential counselor. IMO, I think both clinical and volunteer experiences are wonderful. IF you have clinical experience, it will only make it easier for you when you do your first clinical in terms of being comfortable interacting with patient. We have several classmates who were CNA or tech and their experiences definitely did not count against them. Hope this helps somewhat!
  4. So far, I haven't experienced any negativity from the nurses that I have worked with. They are all very encouraging and willing to share their knowledge. However, I do want to point out that we're still in our RN year. I think the experiences during the specialty year will be different. I have heard of nurses who are totally against accelerated programs where we become a NP without any RN experience. On the other hand, there are nurses who are NP who thinks RN experience is great if you have it, but it is not necessary to be an effective NP. The APNI program does a very nice job preparing the students before we go to clinical. We are equipped with the skills and knowledge before hand and so walking in the first day of clinical is not so stress-provoking. Are you applying to the Midwifery track?
  5. Sorry, I don't know how many applied to the midwifery track. They didn't specified each track, other than the fact that there were about 300 applicants, with family being most competitive. However, I do know that some of the midwifery cohort members had previous doula experiences. I think 2-3 had no related birthing experiences. So there is hope!!! :) Don't stress too much on the essay. I'm sure your first two are good! Just remember to keep it short and to the point, highlighting your interest in vulnerable population.
  6. I agree with everything that Angeljs12000 has written so far. The applicant pool are usually very qualified, some may even be over qualified. The important thing is to show SU how your experiences have helped you to become the person you are today, and how it will translate to helping underserved/vulnerable population. SU is very focused on social justice and working with the underserved. Highlight your interest/ knowledge in this area and how you can affect change. Many of our cohort members have years of experience in their fields, and some of us hold a master degree. I think volunteering is important, but it's not everything. I only had about four months (appx 100 hrs) of volunteer experience at a primary care clinic. Your application is viewed as a whole, and so making your application well-rounded in all areas is very helpful! And yes, family track is considered to be the most competitive, and so if you do not have an interest in working with peds, consider the adult track.
  7. I am also in the 2011 APNI cohort. I lived and breathed this site last year when I was applying to SU. So I hope our two cents will give you some form of comfort knowing that everything will work out for the best!!!
  8. Yes, I received it. I believed it was yesterday, Friday.
  9. Does anyone have any info regarding financial aid? I just submitted my 2011-2012 FAFSA. Since the program starts in June, is there another supplemental application for summer quarter?? Sending everyone who is still waiting or have been wait-listed positive thoughts!!! :)
  10. Congratulation Flaneur. I too just received my big envelope today for the FNP track..Now it's official!!! :yeah:So glad that we will be classmates!! Looking forward to meeting you.
  11. I found out my status in a strange way. I email them explaining my situation and received an email that hinted that I was accepted. Then it was confirmed after speaking to them. I was still in a state of disbelief and asked "if they were sure and not making a mistake? " I am sure you will be hearing something in the next few days. Flaneur--Today was definitely a crucial time for me. I am so thankful that I got the answer that I've been waiting for and am now able to make a more inform decision!!
  12. Praise God!!! I just found out that I've been admitted!!!
  13. CONGRATULATION!!!
  14. Flaneur and mef06011, that email is definitely good news. I am sure it means that the both of you will be receiving your acceptance letters very soon!! Just checked my email and did not receive anything..
  15. lmao...i called twice within the past two days and got different answers. so it is possible that what you say is true!! anyhow, my admission status just changed to "your admission decision will be mailed as soon as possible."
