Seattle University -- APNI 2011

Published

I've been a reader of these message boards for some time and thought I'd finally start participating. I didn't see a thread for the SU APNI 2011 application process, so I thought that as the deadline is this week I would start a thread and see how everyone's process went. I'm interested in the primary care np track myself.

I am new to the forum and was wondering for an update. How many have had or been scheduled for an interview? I have my interview tomorrow and I am both excited and freaked out at the same time. So basically an anxiety mess! For those of you who have had interviews, how did they go? I am just curious as to how formal or structured the interview process will be. Anybody have any tips they would be willing to share? (I am keeping in mind we are all competing for the same spots)

Thanks! Look forward to meeting some of you!

I interviewed for AGNP and it was very structured as I imagine the other track interviews would be. Mine was 8 questions on a worksheet, double sided. They asked me how thier mission ties in whith what I want to do as an AGNP, where I see myself in 10 years, they asked for specific examples of when I failed or succeeded at work/school, and also wanted specific examples of how I dealt with a problem at work/school or in a group. Then they asked questions about how well I was prepared for the intense program and I do know that they DO NOT want you to work during the program. That was pretty much it. I was interviewed by 2 really nice woman, but was so nervous my knees were shaking. I hope you do well and I hope your nerves work to your favor! Good luck BEE!!!!!

My experience was similar for my interview, although I only interviewed with one person. I felt that it was very conversational and relaxed. She said that notifications about acceptance would go out around the first of March. I'm looking forward to hearing as SU is definitely my first choice!

Flaneur and Angel- Thank you so much for the input! It is comforting to know that I am not going to be the only one who's knees will be shaking. I only hope that if I have to write something, my hands won't be shaking equally as bad. In the e-mail I was sent I was told I would be meeting with one person, well only one name was listed. Angel, were you told you were going to be interviewing with two people? I too will be interviewing for the AGNP program. Flaneur, which program did you interview for? Thanks again for the info, and for those who have not interviewed yet, I will let you know if my experience was similar!

I was told that I would be interviewing with 2 people but I also interviewed the very first day of this whole process and I am thinking things have changed seeing as how everyone else has only had one interviewer. And don't worry about writing anything or shakey hands. Mine were also shakey at first but we sat at a table so no one could see lol. Good Luck, let us know how you do!!!!!

I was so nervous....and now I'm even more nervous just waiting. This is torture!!!!! I interviewed the first day in hopes of hearing back sooner though. I have no idea if this will happen, but it sounded like a good idea at the time. hahaha

-->beebopdre: I also interviewed for AGNP. I was told that I would be interviewing with one faculty member. I was nervous beforehand, but quickly we just began talking and it was easier. I'm not sure, mef06011...I think its possible some people may hear earlier (from last year's posts it seems one or two random folks heard back earlier) but I don't think it will really be much of a barometer for the others who are eagerly waiting. I think March should be the important time. I keep reminding myself that there are hundreds of factors that could impact the timing of the whole process...so whether we are waitlisted, waiting for news, or still undetermined, anything is possible. Keep the positive energy, take good care of yourselves, and don't forget to make time to enjoy some restorative downtime. We'll be on the otherside of this one day soon!

To those that already interviewed: There is a written interview part? I thought the whole process was oral.. It would definitely help to know! Thanks!

P.S. Has anyone else interviewed for the FNP track or interviewing soon? So far the majority are from the AGNP track!

No, it's just a conversation. I think the reference was regarding the standard questions that the faculty use to give the interview. They write notes for each question. It was my impression that they have the same questions for each applicant so that there is consistency in evaluation and a way to more easily quantify the interview when the entire admissions committee reviews everything. More straightforward.

That said...I would think some 'flavor' in your answers would be a good thing for faculty who have to ask the same questions over and over again. If there's something about you, your background, or what you'd bring to the program that wouldn't pop up in the normal Q&A, find a way to bring it up!

I've always been more nervous when I over-prepare or "reherse" an interview. I'd recommend not over-thinking it. A way I fake myself into feeling more relaxed is to consider it a 2-way interview. While maybe they're the ones holding all the cards, all the applcants to the APNI I've read about on here are competative, bright folks -- so pretend that you're also interviewing them to see why you should give their school all your money. That way you'll feel more calm, have good questions about their program, and it might feel more like a "conversation" than a high-stress interview.

Well, that's just my odd-ball method. Who knows if it worked?! Haha. Could have been a total flop. But at least I feel a little less nervous when I approach interviews that way.

That's exactly what I do! I just keep reminding myself, I'm interviewing them too! It helped a bit I think, and definitely helped make me more assertive in asking my questions, or clarifying questions my interviewer was asking.

I'm trying to stay calm...and not stalk my mail box, at least not for another few weeks. Self-care, at this point, has consisted of a lot of Ben and Jerry's (my two favorite men) and an unhealthy amount of skiing :)

Thats funny about the whole mailbox stalking lol. Its like I was anxious waiting to hear if I got an interview, anxious about the interview, now Im anxious just waiting to wait for the mail in a few weeks!!!!!!!!
