I've been a reader of these message boards for some time and thought I'd finally start participating. I didn't see a thread for the SU APNI 2011 application process, so I thought that as the deadline is this week I would start a thread and see how everyone's process went. I'm interested in the primary care np track myself.
beebopdre, what specialty did you apply for? My interviewer said something similar, she said lots of people are put on the waitlist who actually end up getting in, "but don't worry, I'm not telling you you're on the waitlist" was what she said to me. I am sure its just something they tell everyone...or at least I hope because Seattle is my first choice, and I let my interviewer know that! :/
I applied for AGNP track. . .which seems like the popular track this year! I was a nervous wreck until about 15 min before my interview when a faculty member walked in with twin 8 month olds. Just the distraction I needed! It helped me to relax a bit before heading in. Not to say I was no longer nervous, it just gave me the chance to quit hyperventilating!! SU is also my first choice! I am from the Seattle area and it is the only program around that seems to be focused in exactly the direction I want to head.
What about you Mef, which track did you interview for? Or did you already say and I just haven't seen? It is comforting to hear that your interviewer mentioned the waiting list thing to you as well. Maybe we had the same interviewer... I was told pretty much the exact same thing. She said that a few years ago they took in nearly everyone that was on the waiting list, while last year only a few off the waiting list made it in. She said to keep in mind that there are many who apply to multiple schools and decide not to choose SU.
For those who applied to the AGNP track, was that your first choice or were you part of the AFNP group that decided to switch? If you decided to switch what changed your mind? Is there anybody who was invited for an interview but still hasn't gone?
As soon as I asked what specialty you applied to I backed up a page and saw it was AGNP. I interviewed for nurse-midwifery, which, curiously, still isn't listed in any of there literature (its in there a few times, but definitely not advertised heavily) I'm hoping that works to my favor!
It makes me feel better that someone else got a comment about the waitlist, because it seems everyone gets the same question, same comments. I'm sure they just want to keep everything consistent, or so I'm telling myself. Hahaha.
I'm from the East Coast (I currently am finishing up my undergrad degree at UConn) and I am so ready for a change in scenery! Seattle (both the school and the city) have everything I want. I keep trying not to get my hopes up...so as I posted before, I have been seeking solace with my favorite companions, Ben and Jerry
I'm hoping I wasn't too forward with telling my interviewer that SU is my first choice. I just want to go there so badly, I figured she should know that although I applied to other schools, I wouldn't turn down a spot there. I'm (I know, I know...) still pretty young and inexperienced when it comes to interviews...was that a major faux pas?
I think that their disclaimer for the process, including waitlists, is pretty standardized too; I heard a similar thing during my interview.
-->beebopdre: I chose the AGNP after they sent out the email to encourage people to consider it. I would have chosen it originally had I known it was to include all adults, and wasn't just GNP. I've always wanted to work with all adults.
-->mef: Nah, I think it's good to let a school know you are very interested, if its sincere. And I definitely see that you are sincere! :-)
Have you thought about what you'll do loli? I know you were waitlisted but was wondering if you'll look into another program or venue or reapply next year? I am only asking cause im worried about not getting in and wonder what I will do? I hope youre getting the answers you wanted and not too discouraged; someone like you sounds pretty strong and with ample opportunities.
Angel, I am soooo sick of reading that! I too am worried about not getting in and am trying to weigh my options. Did you apply to other programs? For me I know that Seattle U is the best fit for me, so although it may not have been the smartest choice, I am putting all my eggs in this one basket!! I read somewhere that nursing credits can be transfered and that it may be possible to begin a RN program until application time comes next year. Then upon getting in at that time transfer the nursing credit I have up to that point. That way if I am turned away for a second time, at least I didn't waste a year waiting. I figure that I will follow up more on whether or not this would work if need be. Fingers crossed we won't have to worry about back up plans!!
Guys last night I went to one of their MSN sessions which I went to last year. One the FNP was giving the talk. The only reason I went, is because I wanted to talk to her so she can shine some light on my wondering head of "whys"?!!
She told me that my medical degree could have hold against me if I didn't mention nursing in every single paragraph
of my letter of intent. She said that I have to right about their missions and how close it is to mine. She also mentioned about dedicating time as a volunteer to undeserved population will be a plus. Which I am doing that in a free clinic. However, he was surprised on why s.o. like me doesn't have an interview?! She was nice but....couldn't give tried her best but of course she hasn't seen my application. She said on total they had about 180-200 applicants! NOT COMPETITIVE AT ALL!!! That's why I'm burning even more!! So those of you who have interviewed just relax you are much more ahead of me "wait-list"= rejection.
Angelis,
I will apply to RN programs since I have the pre reqs and It will open doors. I'm also doing the CNA certificate starting next week. Maybe we can meet some time and talk more. I will be happy. email me.
Guys, the faculty said the cost will be around 70-75000$ as the tuition has gone up and she said that for the first job as an NP we should go to rural areas and it takes about one yr to get it. The comment and the cost turned off a lot people in that room. I don't know what to say....still heart broken.....

So...had my interview! It sounds like my experience was similar to. From what I understand we will all be asked the exact same set of questions. Anyone else think that's weird, isn't an interview supposed to give us the chance to explain why we stand out? My interviewer was the best, but informed me at the end to not to get discouraged if I am put on a waiting list!? Was this supposed to be hint? She also said that all of us should hear by the first week of March! Yikes! I want to know now.
