Hey guys,

I have a question for everyone who applied to the Scripps New Grad Program. I am going to be graduating in December from a school in Chicago and I was wondering how you went about applying? Did you guys just sign up for the job agent alert and when a new grad position came up you applied? Also, how far in advance (for any new grads that applied) were you able to apply for the job before you graduated/took your boards? What supplemental information aside from completing the application did you need to submit? Any information is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!!

Hello Everyone,

I know some of you had interviews previously at Scripps and I was curious about what type of interview questions they asked. Are they clinical questions or general interview questions? Thanks for your help.

Hi New Grad RN,

I interviewed with Scripps last July. All of the external candidate interviews were held on the same dayin one large conference room. There were several tables set up with managers from each unit per table to interview...While candidates were interviewing, the rest of us were able to watch them...I have to say it was a little distracting and extra nerve wracking...it was also very loud...maybe that was part of the interview test! LOL.

Anyway, they did not tell us which unit we would interview with until we got there which didn't leave much opportunity for specific preparation for that particular unit...you just had to be ready to possibly interview in any unit you listed as a preference...if you could remember which ones you put on the app! I ended up interviewing with the Trauma Unit at Scripps Mercy...here is a list of some of the questions they asked (I wrote as many as I could remember down right after!):

-Tell me about yourself and your qualities that would make you a good nurse

-Would others (such as your faculty and classmates from school) consider you a leader?

-Did your classmates at school see you as a person they could go to for help

-Tell me about a time, professionally, when you had to be flexible to complete a task/goal...i totally winged this one because I froze so I talked about applying to nursing school and being accepted to such a far campus and having clinicals in different counties but I told her that I wanted so badly to be a nurse I was willing to do anything (morally and ethically of course!) including driving far distances so I made the best of it with carpools, etc, and it paid off...she loved it...and totally related!

-On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate yourself as a team player and why?

-What would be your ideal job/work environment

-If you came across a technical problem (i.e: ekg machine not working) how would you handle the problem:

-3 of your strongest qualities/attributes for nursing

Don't forget to know their mission, vision, and core values inside out, have some relevant questions prepared, bring copies of your resume and letters of recommendation, and before you leave make sure you get their unit and contact info and immediately send your thank you cards!

I thought I gave a pretty good interview but unfortunately did not get hired...I think interviewing in Trauma hurt me as they hired more internals for that unit. Either way it all works out in the end...I was offered jobs with the VA Hospital and Sharp Memorial and and and happy to say I am currently in the Sharp Memorial New Grad program which I LOVE so far :o) Best of luck to you! Smile, be yourself, and be honest and you will do GREAT!!

I would suggest checking "indeed.com" every morning when you get up. Put in to sort for "New grad RN positions" in San Diego or even broader, southern California. That way you have a heads up when new grad programs are starting. I went to that site religiously when I was looking for a job and after three tries at UCSD, landed my job. Sometimes it takes awhile so hang in there. I actually took an RN oncology position at Loma Linda Univ. Medical center first for 8 months and then transferred down to UCSD. Hard to believe I've been a nurse for almost a full year. Good Luck!

Thank you so much, JKRN!! I really appreciate your help and being so specific. I looked up and down the previous Scripps threads and could not find anything. Congrats on Sharp Memorial, that is a beautiful hospital. I just hope I can nail this interview. Thanks again.

Thanks! :o) I'm sure you will do great! Let me know if you have any other questions :o) Keep us updated!

I have an interview this week with Scripps. Since you were hired over the summer do you have any tips for the interview process? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank You.

sd-ace: Thanks! I am an external applicant who graduated from San Diego State University in Dec 2010. And yes, I am chosen into the unit in which I interviewed for.

PS: I applied in the spring and was rejected by their Tele unit... that was my first ever interview. This time around, I already knew the interview questions so I had time to come up with better answers. So, do not give up! If you don't get a job by fall (which I'm sure you will!), reapply to Scripps again! They were the only one to offer me an interview out of the dozens of places I applied to.
