Screwed Over by My School

Published

I have been completely screwed over by my school.

I finished all requirements for my program, was pinned, and "graduated" this May. However, on June 1st I received an email from the Records Dept saying my record was "deficient", Nursing Dept clarified that was not the case and filled out the forms to fix my problem. About a month later only my lecture grade had been changed from an incomplete to my appropriate letter grade but my clinical grade was still a unsatisfactory. The Nursing Dept filled out ANOTHER form to fix the issue.

By July 6th my grades were fixed and I submitted my application to the Nursing Dept (that's what we do at my school). A week later, it turns out my transcripts were still not released to the Nursing Dept for them to send to the BON. When the Nursing Dept contacted the Records Dept the said they would not be releasing them until AUGUST 15th. A FULL MONTH LATER! Why so long? I don't know! Anyway, the Nursing Dept assured me they would request that their release be expedited. I contacted various individuals in the Records Dept multiple times via telephone and email to ask about the status of the release of my transcripts and I got ZERO response from anyone! I contacted the President of the University and no response.

On August 11th my transcripts were FINALLY released to the Nursing Dept and personally walked over to the BON. However, the transcripts list my degree date as AUGUST 8, 2015. OH. HELL. NO. I graduated in May. I have already had my NCLEX delayed for 3 months. And the Records Dept still will not contact me.

I will guess I will reach out to the President's Office one more time, not sure if I should mention if I once again receive no response that I will be contacting the BON, the Tennessee Board of Regents, hiring a lawyer, and contacting local news stations.

Suggestions, recommendations, helpful advice, contacts?

Thank you for listening!

No, I didn't have a job lined up. That's why I didn't ever think it was a viable option. It was merely something that was suggested to me multiple times. I completely agree that I would not win any "case" against them. I was only posting so that if anyone else had something similar happen to them I could find out what avenues they had to take to get a resolution.

The only thing that I would be upset over is if your student loan payments are due 6 months from may or 6 months from august.

I don't know if you have any loans, but you have 6 months from graduating or dropping out to start making payments. If they started the 6 month clock in May but I couldn't even register for my NCLEX until mid August, leaving me only 3 months to get licensed and find a job, I would be beyond ticked off. Other than that, I don't see the real issue here.

Good luck!

Well since they have her listed as graduating in August then wouldn't her loans be due 6 months from then?

Step away from the ledge, OP. Seriously. I'm quite certain that your problem was not the only one that your school was dealing with during your timeline. Turns out, there are other people who need help, you are not number one in anyone's life but your own.

Your solutions seem wildly disproportionate to the "atrocities" that happened to you. Channel your negative energy into something far more productive, like studying for the NCLEX. Best wishes

I don't really care about their issues, it's no excuse for incompetence. I go to work everyday, I do my job, and I do it well. I guess I expect the same from others. In fact you are wrong about me not being number one in anyone else's life, I am number one in my family's life. Thankfully, we weren't depending on me to quickly become a RN to start earning a higher income...

Unfortunately, OP, the world does not revolve around you. Yes, they messed up. But that does not mean you need to go start a fire because of this. Like a PP said, if you got a lawyer but didn't have a job lined up what would you gain from the lawyer other than losing a lot of money? It shouldn't have happened but it did. If you have what you need then I suggest you start studying for the NCLEX & stop worrying about the past. Stop staring at the lemon & thinking it's just a lemon, think about what that lemon can be.

You've gotten your suggestions. Go on & pass the NCLEX!

They aren't going to change your graduation date as the incomplete wasn't corrected until after May. Regardless of fault or incompetence, it is reality. Did you not have access to your grades before or after graduation?

I understand your frustration but it appears there is nothing you can do other than prep for the NCLEX, pass and move forward.

I assume so, but you never know! It's probably something that's worth looking into just to make sure. Having delinquent payments is one great way to destroy your credit score

Oh I know. My husband has terrible credit & mine is in the high 700s/low 800s because someone is delinquent on payments.

Wow, I'm astounded, really. How are you going to react when something REALLY BIG happens in your life?

You must have led a charmed life prior to this. Something that should have been frustrating and annoying has taken on a life of its own.

I truly hope something that's actually horrific never happens to you, because I don't think you could deal.

I worked at a trauma ICU and saw the most horrible, awful, life altering things happen to people. My assessment ever since has been that most things are really small potatoes. They really really really are.

NO, I don't! It was suggested to me by other people. I was wondering if that was a realistic option. Obviously, if I were to go to the media, I would NEVER find a job. I really don't want to hire a lawyer or go to the press. Why are people so stuck on this? I just want the school to fix my darn transcripts. Since I have tried the diplomatic approach already and gotten almost nowhere, I was wondering what other avenues of recourse I had. So unless some one has experienced an issue similar to this and has some constructive advice or suggestions, quit reiterating what EVERY OTHER poster has said...

Why? What is that going to solve? You can't go back in time and change anything so what difference does it make now that it says August instead of May? The outcome is the same. Changing it to may is not going to get you back those two or three months to job hunt. Focus your efforts on the nclex so that can get your license and work.

People keep reiterating because it's the only reasonable course of action, all things considered, from our vantage point of many years' experience. It's the net. Take it or leave it, but not much point in arguing about it.

Wow. The school I graduated from only confers BSN degrees twice a year - in May and in December. My program finished in August, but that still meant my degree was not awarded until December. I was still able to take NCLEX and get a license number to practice in my state. My resume simply said "BSN, expected December 2014." It was a non-issue. My school and my state also move at the pace of snails. It took two months from the time I was eligible to take NCLEX before my program and the state got their end done for me to be actually be able to take the exam. I don't see the catastrophe in your situation that you are making it out to be.

The purpose of me sharing this info was to *maybe* offer you some perspective about your situation. Focus your energy where it matters: prepare for NCLEX and land a job.

If you still feel the need to gather the angry villagers and pitch-forks, so be it.

Speaking from someone who recently graduated and has taken NCLEX, I have to urge you to try your best to cool down and dig your heels into the books! The stress is unbearable enough and while you might feel justified in being angry (I totally get it..), I would consider picking your own battles and keep your eyes on the prize. It would be a shame to let all the negativity steal your focus and heaven forbid, cause you to fail and have to reschedule, further delaying your journey. Just some advice and I hope it helps!
