Narcan for School Nurses?

Are you all trained in using Narcan at your school?

I've used it in the hospital, but it looks like the push is to get Narcan at school.

I am going to go to NYSSED and research, but am curious about what you do.

I have not researched it. I work with 10-12 year olds, so while it's not IMPOSSIBLE that I would ever see it, I've never had to deal with those kinds of issues. I can see it being relevant at the high school level

I bet it is coming, the NHSNA is writing a position statement now...there are some schools here that have almost instant access to EMS and it probably won't be used, and there are some schools that wait 30 minutes for EMS.:Skull:

Who knew we would ever be dealing with this? Some schools are probably at more risk of the parents overdosing than the kids.

In RI, it is mandated to be in in every MS and HS. In New Hampshire, it will be a local control issue

It's probably going to eventually be passed here that we stock it for schools. As of right now, i don'tr believe we even have a bill on the table in my state -but now i'm curious - i'm going to look today.

There is a nasal spray version given to PD and first responders and even available in many CVS. Kind of like an EpiPen no IV needed for emergent treatment but 911 gets called when you administer

We are still having problems getting Epi on board.

Now Narcan?

We have 2 FD within 5 blocks of the school.

I just... No.

I don't feel comfortable with this, and I can't put my finger on it. Will there be standing orders for the Narcan? How will we know to give it?

In your case 911 makes more sense. Areas with a 30+ minute response time...

In my area PD carries and administers and they are on scene in minutes so issue solved

That's part of why I like reading the school nurse threads. My county has not had a school nurse for more than 20 yrs.

When I was a kid, we had one to cover the whole county; she was at each school one day a week (maybe less). Now the health dept covers the schools but are never on site regularly. An "aide" is there for any complaints, but to my knowledge have zero training; just there for ice packs, bandaids & to supervise until a parent can pick up a child.

But, ya know? We are NOT a trauma unit. We are a school.

I don't feel comfortable with the Narcan.

I need to research it more. This will be my project tonight. Last time I had a part in it was over 10 years ago, and a doc administered it.

I am with Far on this one. Our school is just looking into stock epi this year and only because I started looking into it! We are a small community and have excellent emergency services. I highly dought this will ever be an issue here.
