Another Tragedy

I'm not posting this to ignite a gun debate but to call on you, since we are all related by way of our many and varied relationships with students, to offer prayers and positive thoughts for Santa Fe High School parents and students...another shooting; 8 have been confirmed dead so far. Dear God!!

Yes, gun control works in Chicago. Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws, but obviously the gang members choose not to obey them. So, let's take the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens so the criminals are the only ones with guns.

Schools are "gun free" zones. I don't understand why these students are bringing guns into schools. Don't they understand there are gun control laws for schools?

I implore you to do more research on this tired talking point. Over 60% of gun violence in Chicago is committed with guns bought in from neighboring states (Wisconsin and Indiana) which have more lax gun laws and are then resold (illegally) in Chicago. I can get to either of those states in an hour. State lines do not stop guns from coming in.

If the argument is "Why have stricter gun laws if criminals do not follow the law?" then why have any laws at all?

Why have speed limits if people will speed?

Why have DUI checkpoints?

Why require that people renew their driver's license at certain intervals?

Why require a more specific license for driving a truck or school bus?

Why not allow people to buy as much Sudafed as they want?

Why require drug testing before obtaining a nursing license?

Why monitor or regulate any aspect of society?

Stricter gun laws and more thorough background checks will NOT take guns out of the hands of responsible, law-abiding citizens. Will it be a little bit harder or require a wait time? Yep. And what a small price to pay to not have to call another parent and tell them that they will never hug their child again.

This. When The Kid was 5, another kid, friend, neighbor, bit him on the bus. Of course I was upset, but before calling the mom, I asked my kid how it happened.

The Kid was sitting in front of The Biter.

Well...if you sit in front of him, how did your hands get in his face???

Answer: He was turned around with his hands in The Biter's face.

That led to a discussion on that, and my phone call to the mom was much more that of an ally in this "let us teach both our kids to keep their hands and mouths to themselves..." instead of YOUR BULLY KID BIT MY ANGEL!!!

Also, I'm extremely disheartened to hear that this shooter thought it was his right to murder a young lady who rebuffed him, and also really disgusted that his dad didn't secure his guns.

Our flag is at half mast. Again. After The Pledge we had a moment of silence. Again.

We had a similar issue but it was 4th grade. The student was bothering the group of kids to play, kids were having a game that only needed 4 players. Student didn't understand this and kept bothering. Gym teacher was confronting him that it's okay if they don't want to play with him, but as this happened, Student fell on some balls. Student was okay, but shaken up from fall. The other students who were not letting play were helping him up, but one was laughing. Student got mad and started to fight the boy who was laughing.

They separated them and then brought to me. I called parents for medical reasons (I tell them this and that the discipline was handled by our dean of students) and dad was so mad and didn't listen to the incident, came to the school, called for me and said he wanted to press charges on the other student and started to yell at me. And we had to send him to our Dean of Students and finally he just said he was withdrawing him because he's always being bullied, which I'm not sure it's true or not because the teachers explained to me that he's usually starting the fights because he's getting into the conversations and in the games and the students get annoyed by him and tell him to leave them alone or to go away, and he gets angry.

I have to say, I am so over the sarcasm...EVERY FLIPPING TIME people voice a concern about DEAD CHILDREN, out come the " Ban cars, Ban knives, Gun free Zones" etc

I would guess that a majority of people who say that want gun control, really want:

1. No more kids (or anyone else) to die, crazy thought, isn't that?

2. Reduced access to prevent those who should not (hx of DV, previous gun events etc)

3. Liability to those who do not secure their guns (parents whose kids take guns from a home)

I don't know how to get there, but I sure think that those who refuse to at least consider the rights of someone else to live really have no interest in any of the above.

I also don't understand why the NRA is so financially invested in Congress? What is the point of a donation if not to sway their views?

I don't want the gun of a person who is trained. licensed background checked...you are not usually the problem. But I do want there to be a conversation that doesn't begin with

This is My 2A right and eff you for even thinking about taking it away

This only happens in the US.

And yet there are troubled teens in every country.

Isn't it time to look elsewhere for solutions and accept that gun ownership needs to go?

100% accurate. The only difference between the US and other developed nations (which have dang near zero mass shootings) is the access to guns. They have the same TV/movies, the same rate of mental illness, the same freaking everything. But can't get their hands on a war grade weapon.

I'll agree it's time to look elsewhere... I think gun ownership needs to stay.

Yes there are similarities, but I know and you know your statement isn't factual.

Why don't you suggest something else, then, O Defender of Firearms at all costs?

The solution is difficult. It is obvious that kids/ adults that shoot up a school/ university/ night club have mental issues. The key is to keep the guns away from people with mental illness that are a threat to society without banning guns from everybody that is on an anti-depressant.

I wish the psychiatric community could do this, but my experience says they are too immature to make that assessment. I have spoken of my pseudo foster child before, three inpatient admissions after threatening real human beings with a deadly weapon each time and not once did they discuss the action, just his feelings. I doubt they would consider him a threat to others. Well, sorry, I understand the finality of death and I said no more after the first time. There are consequences to actions, no matter what their motivation, and that is where modern psychiatry has failed us. Maybe this is the true crisis in mental health, the providers themselves.

I disagree. There may be other small differences but the most glaring is the access and availability to guns. Other nations noted that that was an issue and made changes which resulted in fewer deaths by firearms.

Times change, our mindset and laws need to change too.
